In the Blood: A Novel | Lisa Unger
21 posts | 27 read | 55 to read
The New York Times bestselling author and International Thriller Writers Best Novel finalist Lisa Unger returns to the dark psychological suspense that made Beautiful Lies a bestseller around the world. Lana Granger lives a life of lies. She has told so many lies about where she comes from and who she is that the truth is like a cloudy nightmare she cant quite recall. About to graduate from college and with her trust fund almost tapped out, she takes a job babysitting a troubled boy named Luke. Expelled from schools all over the country, the manipulative young Luke is accustomed to controlling the people in his life. But, in Lana, he may have met his match. Or has Lana met hers? When Lanas closest friend, Beck, mysteriously disappears, Lana resumes her lying waysto friends, to the police, to herself. The police have a lot of questions for Lana when the story about her whereabouts the night Beck disappeared doesnt jibe with eyewitness accounts. Lana will do anything to hide the truth, but it might not be enough to keep her ominous secrets buried: someone else knows about Lanas lies. And hes dying to tell. Lisa Ungers writing has been hailed as sensational (Publishers Weekly) and sophisticated (New York Daily News), with gripping narrative and evocative, muscular prose (Associated Press). Masterfully suspenseful, finely crafted, and written with a no-holds-barred raw power, In the Blood is Unger at her best.

A psychological thriller that keeps you on edge. Lana was a troubled child, but then Lana‘s father was convicted for murdering Lana‘s mother. Lana is now in a small private college, believing no one knows of the past, but clues of someone knowing keep popping up when Lana‘s best friend disappears.

This book had me for the first half. It‘s a solid “Bad Seed” thriller, even though the way the book broaches child psychopathy made me uneasy.

If IN THE BLOOD had ditched its Big Twist about Lana/Lane‘s gender identity, the book would have been so much better. Instead it moved away from more interesting threads & focused on the narrator‘s gender in a way that conflated it with their introspection about monstrosity, psychopathy, and evil. Ugh.

I will definitely read more by Lisa Unger. This got very interesting very fast and kept me guessing. Just what I was looking for in a thriller. This falls in a category I find lately to feel kind of hokey, and the beginning felt that way for this one too. But it wasn't long and I was enthralled with what was being hidden, the secrets, and the lies... And ultimately how it all was connected. Fun read.

Every once in a while I just want to read some screwy f-Ed up story that involves psychological thrills and fictional torture. This book scratched that itch, even if I did find some of its storyline predictable. Solid story-telling, and I really appreciated the POV from a person suffering with mental illness. #womenauthors #thriller

mcipher Lisa Unger can be totally fun in such a twisted way. 😉 8y
DragonSadhana @mcipher This is the first of hers I've read! I will definitely read more. 8y
RadicalReader @DragonSadhana this book seems insane but in a good way not often that occurs with books 8y
DragonSadhana @RadicalReader You would be right! It's definitely insane and creepy. If you haven't read Pretty Girls, that's also insane and creepy in a good way. 8y
RadicalReader @DragonSadhana thanks I will check it out 8y

A novel with potential to be one of the best recent psychological thrillers but which remains unfulfilled. All of its twists are predictable. In its merit, the novel fantastically depicts the psychology of a transgender character and makes great use of the double to achieve dramatic effect, but an ending in which an obviously transgender character - clearly so since early childhood - becomes male again and wants a muscle car is outrageous. #lgbt

Poignant, but the reality for so many minorities and people who have experienced great suffering or loss. Incredibly refreshing to see this addressed in a novel. #sadquote #ambition #distress
