Trust No One
Trust No One: A Thriller | Paul Cleave
18 posts | 29 read | 41 to read
In this outstanding psychological thriller (Publishers Weekly, starred review) by the Edgar-nominated author of Joe Victim, a famous crime writer struggles to differentiate between his own reality and the frightening plot lines hes created for the page. Jerry Grey is known to most of the world by his crime writing pseudonym, Henry Cuttera name that has been keeping readers on the edge of their seats for more than a decade. Recently diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers at the age of forty-nine, Jerrys crime writing days are coming to an end. His twelve books tell stories of brutal murders committed by bad men, of a world out of balance, of victims finding the darkest forms of justice. As his dementia begins to break down the wall between his life and the lives of the characters he has created, Jerry confesses his worst secret: The stories are real. He knows this because he committed the crimes. Those close to him, including the nurses at the care home where he now lives, insist that it is all in his head, that his memory is being toyed with and manipulated by his unfortunate disease. But if that were true, then why are so many bad things happening? Why are people dying? Hailed by critics as a masterful (Publishers Weekly) writer who consistently offers ferocious storytelling that makes you think and feel (The Listener) and whose fiction evokes Breaking Bad reworked by the Coen Brothers (Kirkus Reviews), Paul Cleave takes us down a cleverly twisted path to determine the fine line between an author and his characters, between fact and fiction.

This hit a little close to home for me as I am dealing with advanced Alzheimer‘s with my grandmother. Obviously I hope she isn‘t a murderer but it was a bit hard for me. The only thing I found confusing was the very end.

tpixie I‘m sorry to hear about your grandmother. I thought the ending was a little confusing too but I‘m thinking because of his Alzheimer he forgot Hans killed everyone and he thinks he did the killing again. 6y

How is it possible that this is my first Paul Cleave? I loved it!! Such a great premise for a thriller and it was engaging, complicated and thought provoking. I couldn't put it down. Jerry/Harry will be with me for a long time.

#TBT one year ago today, exactly. What you can't see is my 5-star rating of Career of Evil just below, and my 1-star DNF of Fates & Furies just above. I like going back to see what I was reading!

A very good suspense story but the ending made me sad. But worth the read. Good writing, add this to you tbr list.

MyNamesParadise Is this book part of a series he writes or a stand-alone? 8y
HotTeaGoodBooks This is the only book I've read by him, but it reads as a stand alone. 8y

This book was incredible. No cliches and no foreseeable plot twists. I was at the end of the book not knowing who to trust - just like the title warned! Warning: only pick this book up after all your chores are done and I have a solid 32 hours to devote to reading. I learned this the hard way...

Gave this a "pick" because "so-so" is too low (it's a solid 4.5) I love wry/sarcastic humor in thrillers and mysteries and Mr. Cleave does it well.

Great premise. The story was done well. I want to talk about the very, very end, but I can't as it will give you an idea.

tpixie The ending! 6y

B&N book mail!! I decided to go with the Coffeehouse Mystery series as a starter. And I wanted some good thrillers and I love to collect Pride and Prejudice anything so I am curious how this one will be! Thanks @lemonlime799 for the suggestion!

LitHousewife I really enjoyed In a Dark, Dark Wood. 8y
queerbookreader Nice!! I hope you enjoy! There are some really well written characters in the Coffeehouse series that I don't always find in other cozy mysteries so I hope you love the characters as much as I do 😊☕️✨ 8y

Finished this book so I can send it for my postal book club. This was a good read but really has me thinking about Alzheimer's and how terrible it would be if this were to happen in real life. I give it 🌟🌟🌟

Two of my worst fears: early onset Alzheimer's and being falsely (?) accused of a crime. A fast read and surprisingly engaging mystery with the ultimate unreliable narrator.
