The World Without Us
The World Without Us | Alan Weisman
A study of what would happen to Earth if the human presence was removed examines our legacy for the planet, from the objects that would vanish without human intervention to those that would become long-lasting remnants of humankind.

I have often thought we are a virus that lives on this beautiful planet uninvited. This book sort of shows us that. Instead of living with the world and being part of it, we just keeping consuming it much like a parasite behaves. This shows us how the world will be just fine and ultimately better without us. Although i love the premise, the delivery was a bit dry and repeated itself quite a bit.

What if Covid had wiped out all the humans, but left the world otherwise unchanged? Weisman explores that question looking at places from the Channel Tunnel to Houston‘s oil refineries to Hagia Sofia as far as breakdown and destruction. He also explores which animals and plants would thrive and which would die. He includes a bit of environmental history as well. #audiobook #BorrowNotBuy

Reggie Do all the invasive species take over? 3y
Megabooks @Reggie he talks about various areas of the world. In some places yes, like kudzu in the South, but other places the native species do better. Like cattle in the Serengeti will likely die off, according to the author. 3y

Taking the day off today and going through books that have come back to me recently, reading all the great comments from everyone and remembering what a great book this was.

I hope we can plan again for a #NForNonfiction2020 reboot, trilogy, sequel, etc.😉

You ladies always pick the best books that I didn‘t even know I really really needed to read!

Gezemice What‘s the nonfiction group? I enjoy my nonfiction, although I would avoid politics... 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice It was part of a Litsy Postal Mark Up group. We signed up to the nonfiction group, each picked one book, underlined and commented on it, and then mailed it onto the next person in a circle. This was my pick coming back to me with everyone‘s notes and comments inside. 5y
Gezemice That sounds really cool. Writing in the book is a bit of a funny feeling for me though... and I would never mail a thing, lol, I am the least reliable for such a thing. But it does look like loads of fun! I am glad you are enjoying it. 5y

Can we look at the past in order to see the future? And what if that future didn‘t include humans? What would the earth and its revised balance of organisms look and act like? To call this a cautionary tale is to diminish its importance. It‘s so much more than that. It‘s a global scientific horror story, all precipitated by our own species. Slow-ish but valuable!

I saw this on that *other* social media. It reminds me so much of the book I‘m reading right now. Plastic is the devil, and don‘t even get me started on tires. This book (which I tagged) is both depressing and making me hate humans for their refusal to face the damage they are creating.

The premise of a world after humans is so interesting, and I like the way it was formatted to discuss cities, different forms of wildlife, etc. At times, it could be a bit dry, and I had a hard time following his connections every now and then. However, I learned a lot—my favorite parts were about New York City and about Cappadocia, Turkey.

More technical in spots then I was expecting, but the total was way more than the sum of its parts. I thoroughly enjoyed this look into the future without humans, and how things we have set into motion would continue on without and despite us.

Day 18: I read it back in 2013, but it resonated with me. What would happen to the world if humans disappeared? Even though we have done irreparable harm to our planet, it would go on without us... Very #thoughtprovoking

The premise of the book is this: what would happen if humans suddenly disappeared? I was expecting a book about what would happen to human-made structures such as dams, skyscrapers, dams, our houses, bridges, etc. But the scope of the book is much broader than this. You might think that the earth would return to an unspoiled paradise but unfortunately Homo sapiens have done so much damage to the planet that this is impossible. Fascinating read!

JoScho Keenan is beautiful! My brother had a Doberman and he was such a gentle giant. ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
BestDogDad @JoScho Thanks! He‘s also a gentle giant. We feel like we won the lottery when we found him. I can‘t believe someone gave up on him. Such a good boy. 6y
JoScho I have two dogs that were given up and they are such good boys. Makes me wonder how someone couldn‘t love them or appreciate them. I love seeing dogs rescued - it warms my heart. 6y

Again still #TBR, this book discusses what Earth might look like if humans were to suddenly disappear. Sounds like a fascinating non-fiction read.

APLitlife Like a Ray Bradbury short story. 7y
underthebelljar @APLitlife Yes! "There Will Come Soft Rains" is actually one of my favorite short stories. 7y

APLitlife @BookishJess It is one of my favorites to teach. The kids always ask for more Bradbury. 7y
underthebelljar @Laura317 I didn't know there was a TV show about the same topic. Maybe it's based off the book? 7y
underthebelljar @APLitlife Bradbury is amazing. It was in high school that I first read that short story. 7y

Ostensibly a book about a potential future, ultimately it's more about the past and present. I don't know what the world will look like without us, but now I do know what it'll have to overcome with or without us.

I'd hoped for a bit more imaginative work on what will happen without us, where this sticks closely to what would happen to what we leave behind. Relevant and important, but still all about us.

Someone asked me how I read so much. It's not magic, alas. I just make the time. I don't watch TV. I sleep less than would be ideal. I hurry with work and productivity to get time to read.

This is a good, but slightly depressing, book about whether or not the world would recover if we weren't here. It likely would. I really felt hope until the book hit the nuclear energy part of human development and the world is basically screwed. I knew this but didn't KNOW it. Now I KNOW it and Noe it cannot be unknown. My heart is broken.

blurb

The World Without Us | Alan Weisman

Be it the Rapture, aliens, or our own stupidity if we were to disappear the world would repair itself. It would take awhile and a lot of species might not make it but it would be better, healthier. It makes me sad to know we've done so much going damage that will take 100s and 1000s of years for just the smallest changes to happen. Some of the big damage, even longer than we can really comprehend. But at least the mosquitos will make it.

Some of you have probably heard cockroaches will survive anything, including nuclear war. Well, add plastics to what will still be around once we're gone. I already knew this but hearing it in the context of this book has saddened me.
