Striking. Graphic. Imaginative. Horrific. These match every one of these what if short stories. They‘re about space exploration in the future space, some testing new planets and others about Martian invasion. This what if is if blacks were sent off parent to colonize the moon and left while whites destroyed themselves in war. How would black react to white coming to them? Feels right on with today. Some give horrors of where we‘re going

I have been reading this book off and on for probably almost 15 years (I definitely prefer novels to short stories). That being said, Bradbury's stories are interesting and offer a lot of interesting social commentary that is still applicable today, even though the book was originally published in 1951. Many of the stories have somewhat depressing endings, but the last full story was more upbeat, which was nice.

This short story collection has so many great science fiction and fantasy stories! I‘ve been telling people all about them. Some are strongly reminiscent of The Twilight Zone. I think everyone should read my favorite one, “The Exiles,” this year! It is about famous authors and their characters who were banned from planet earth 100 years earlier. Go read it and tell me what you think! #authoramonth

This is a collection of 18 short stories within a story. The narrator meets the Illustrated Man, a wanderer with marvellous, moving images tattooed across his body. Each of the images is said to be the future and they‘re the 18 sc-fi stories within. As with many short story collection, some stories are more interesting and memorable than others. The Veldt, The Exiles, Marionettes Inc, and The Rocket stand out for me.

Reading this again for book club! According to my book list I read it when I was 14. Just as good as I remember! Bradbury is timeless.

Sitting outside having coffee with YumYum, my porch stray, on a Saturday morning with Ray Bradbury is the best thing ever.

AlaMich He just hangs out with you on the porch sometimes and then goes on his way? I love that! 😻 4y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @AlaMich He just showed up about a month ago 🤷‍♀️ We took him to the vet and had him neutered and got his shots. He sleeps and eats on the porch and drinks out of the bird bath, but during the day, no idea where he goes. He‘s lovable, and always comes “home” ❤️ 4y
AlaMich He knew exactly what he was doing when he came to your porch. You are good people! 4y
Mistermandolin A fantastic writer. Stylistically he has few equals. The short stories are a delight too. Wonderful, haunting prose. One of my favourites. Great pick! 4y

This book is a compilation of fourteen futuristic short stories told through the tattoos inked into the Illustrated Man's flesh. The book begins when the Illustrated Man encounters a man on the road and they begin to talk. I had several I really liked but my favorite ones were "The Veldt" and "Zero Hour." It is well worth a read especially if you like sci-fi short stories. ?????

Not the introduction to Bradbury I was hoping for. A few stories like The Veldt and The Long Rain were okay, but I actively disliked most of the collection. It seemed like many were built around a core message, which distracted me from the more imaginative elements. I did wonder if this was a case where things that seem like tropes now were created by authors like Bradbury, but even if that is true, it doesn't make the stories easier to enjoy.

readordierachel Too bad. The cover sure is cool. 5y
Billypar @readordierachel Yeah, I love the shades of blue and purple. No dragons that I can remember in the stories- most involve rockets, but maybe those don't sell as well as dragons?🤷‍♂️ 5y
readordierachel How strange! It's a mystery. 5y

vivastory This was the first Bradbury I read too & I recall being lukewarm. I had much better luck with Something Wicked This Way Comes & Farenheit 451. 5y
Billypar @vivastory Yeah I'm not giving up on him: I think I'll enjoy the novels more. At the time it was written, I think there might have been more pressure for stories to have a 'take home point'. Even if that's true in some ways for 451, the longer form means he can devote more time to exploring the world he created instead of making sure the message gets through. 5y
vivastory Yeah, his stories are definitely more didactic than his novels, but I've even enjoyed some of his pieces in his collected stories quite a bit more than the ones in Illustrated Man. I have it on my Kindle & I read a random story from time to time. I've also heard from several other Littens that Dandelion Wine is phenomenal. I was hoping to read it last year before summer ended for the peak reading experience, but it didn't happen. 😆 5y
Billypar @vivastory Good to know about his stories from other collections - I won't write those off either. I've seen the same enthusiasm about Dandelion Wine on Litsy, so I am curious! 5y

This book, overall, was one of the most amazing books I have read. The book itself is composed of separate stories, all based on different settings, however, the very one thing that does not change throughout the entire book is the conflict between humans and technologies, which is what people have always been thinking about.

Ray Bradbury is masterful. I love Fahrenheit 451 and I'm excited to be exploring his other works. Bradbury's insights and social commentary through story is incredible. Considering this book in particular, there were some stories I really liked and others that for me were just ok. On the whole it's a great collection and I'm looking forward to reading more of his writing.

TieDyeDude I have seen a bunch of posts for this book recently. I have the audio on hold! 6y

"Bradbury presents himself as a nameless narrator who meets the Illustrated Man--a wanderer whose entire body is a living canvas of exotic tattoos. What's even more remarkable, and increasingly disturbing, is that the illustrations are themselves magically alive, and each proceeds to unfold its own story"

GingerAntics My thoughts exactly. Although, I did discover Kurt Vonnegut from CM, too. 6y
Bookwomble It's a great collection of separate stories, with the framing narrative of a wandering stranger whose tattoos seem to have an eerie, hypnotic life of their own. Several of the stories were adapted into an early '70s episodic film starring Rod Steiger. It's Bradbury, so it can't be bad 😊 6y
Slajaunie My TBR is already so long, what is adding another beautiful book! 😋 @bookwomble and by the way, I just saw part of you in a picture of a free library. 😂 6y
Bookwomble @Slajaunie Ah! Was there some faint reflection of myself I hadn't noticed? 6y
thevictoriousone I LOVED The Illustrated Man! It‘s definitely not a feel-good book, though. They‘re semi-horror-ish sci-fi short stories but they‘re so good. I read The Velda (one of the stories) in Mrs. Brown‘s class in junior high and loved it even though it sort of messed me up because what happens is pretty horrible! 6y
thevictoriousone Of course it was Criminal Minds. The feel of these stories is pretty similar to the feel of a Criminal Minds episode. Like a horrific car crash you just can‘t take your eyes from. 6y
