31 posts | 32 read | 11 to read
When mommy is away, it's up to daddy to do his daughter's hair in this ode to self-confidence and the love between fathers and daughters from former NFL wide receiver Matthew A. Cherry and New York Times bestseller Vashti Harrison. Zuri's hair has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way. Zuri knows it's beautiful. When mommy does Zuri's hair, she feels like a superhero. But when mommy is away, it's up to daddy to step in! And even though daddy has a lot to learn, he LOVES his Zuri. And he'll do anything to make her--and her hair--happy. Tender and empowering, Hair Love is an ode to loving your natural hair--and a celebration of daddies and daughters everywhere.

Hair Love has to be one of the cutest books that I've read! This RF novel was written by Matthew A. Cherry, and went on to not only become a short film, but win an Oscar for best animated short film! This book is about a dad who does his daughters hair for the very first time. It's an amazing book that people love for its diversity! It's definitely one of my favorites and something that I would recommend for your classroom! #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio Hair Love would be a great book to read aloud with students. You can also show the short film to the students once you have finished with the book, and have them compare and contrast the two. With this lesson you reach UDL 2.5 (illustrate through multiple media) and well as EL 45 (use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities). The following website includes the lesson: https://librarylearners.com/hair-love-library-lessons/. 4y

An amazing story, this New York Times Bestseller, Hair Love captures the heart of everyone as an RF story. We follow Zuri as she and her father try to find the perfect hairstyle for an important event with some troubles along the way.

I would use this story for a RA in my classroom. I can use this strategy to highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (3.2)UDL. We can achieve this by creating interest in the story and ask thoughtful question as we read together. For my El‘s I would create a visual timeline to process what happened during our story together. (42)
4y
Mmurphy A great resource for this RA: https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/hair-love-memory-match These activities help set in the vocabulary for our students after their read aloud. 4y
ztorres This is such a great book. I truly enjoyed it doing it on my read aloud assignment. This book was a gift from my mother, the little girl not only has my nickname but she also reminded her of me growing up with my father. I think books like these are excellent to have in the classroom because it will allowed students to make life connection. It will keep them engaged and wanting to keep reading more books. 4y

Zuri was on a quest for the “perfect” hairstyle, and in mom‘s absence recruits her dad for a bit of help. After several failed attempts, they found some resources and worked together to achieve the “perfect” look for her mother‘s return home. This RF book will melt your heart when you witness the father-daughter relationship.

TabathaA This award winner (New York Times Best Seller, Amelia Bloomer Booklist, Irma Black Award Nominee, NAACP Image Award Nominee, 2020 Rise: Feminist Book Project Top 10 List) would best be presented as an RA. Have students discuss and model their own hair. Use UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, and authenticity) and EL 17 (provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions). (edited) 4y
TabathaA Fun Fact #1: This book was made as a result of an Oscar-winning short film, which is unusual. Typically, a movie/film is made after the book is successful! Fun Fact #2: Matthew A Cherry not only has a film career, and is now an author, but he also briefly made it to the NFL, being signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars! #UCFLAE3414SP21 4y

Hair Love is an RF, RA book would be an amazing addition to any classroom library. The thematic elements of self esteem, family, and love are sure to resonate with both students and teachers. Young Zuri loves the many things her hair can do, but on a very special day she wants an equally special hairstyle. With the help of her dad, Zuri embarks on a hair journey that she hopes will rise to the occasion.

Betrinag http://www.readwritethink.org/professional-development/strategy-guides/teacher-r... This story works best as a RA, with the help of the strategies found on Read, Write, Think. The UDL principle 3.3 and EL 20 will support student comprehension of the book. 4y

This RF, RA would be an awesome choice to add to yo collection. The theme of this book is that we are all beautiful doesn‘t matter the type of hair we have. Zuri wants to look special for the arrival of her mother. Her dad gets into the journey with her and tries different hair styles until they get the perfect one.

jinfanzon1988 This would be a great read aloud using the recommendations of CPALMS. The UDL principles 2.1 and 3.1 regarding language and symbols and comprehension. EL 2 and 5 prompting cooperation and tech technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. 4y

This RF-RA book “Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry illustrated by Vashiti Harrison is such a phenomenal book about the unconditional love between a father and a daughter.. and her hair. No matter what struggles arise, with love for yourself and others, there‘s always a solution! 🤩🤩

In this link you can find Matthew A. Cherry‘s read‘s, descriptions, and a short-film of Hair Love!

PatriciaS Love this book, great review 👍 4y
Spearsall continued: UDL principle 1.3 is used here “offer alternatives for visual information”. While performing the read aloud you can use products such as a comb, hair brush, hair tie, and much more to offer other visuals for students. By doing this we also include our EL strategies: teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. 4y
ReaganT I want to add this one to my collection soon! I love the idea of using props, it adds so much more to the story! And I think it is a great way for ESOL students to visualize the reading. 4y
DrSpalding I really like that you are using author websites as resources. They are one of the best resources of course and you are exposing your peers to these high-quality activities that can extend the learning. Well done. 4y

I chose this book for..obvious reasons😂 I, just like my girl Zuri in Hair Love have a lot of hair to love! Growing up, I was bullied for my hair, stereotyped because of my hair, & most importantly I never once saw a girl who looked like me in a book growing up. People don‘t understand that this changes the way we view things! Due to my experience, I try to read/provide books like this that show that missing representation for ALL students to see!

Hair love is a heartwarming story of Zuri, the celebration of her beautiful hair and the bond between her and her father. This story is a RF book and would best be used in the classroom during a S.
UDL: Use multiple media for communication (5.1)
ESOL: Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts

RamzieM https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/hair-love-memory-match
The resource above is an online puzzle matching and a great resource to use after the stories written by students to help them familiarize themselves with the vocabulary.
4y
Nkaufmann Ramzie, I like the resource you chose as it connects back to your ESOL strategy about teaching technical terms and vocabulary. Students love playing games so they will definitely enjoy this activity. 4y
gpraytor Hi Ramzie, this is an amazing book and your resource you chose connects to the strategy a d the books message really well. 4y
DrSpalding Reading is fundamental is an excellent resource. This is helpful to have a digital follow up activity especially if you are teaching remotely. The story having won an Academy award for the animated short film is sure to be popular in the years to come. 4y

I‘m not crying- you‘re crying!! Oh my goodness this Oscar Award winning short film turned RF story book is story perfect for S. In this story Zuri and her Daddy work together in loving her hair. This book is purposeful in self regulation for students in UDL guidelines of optimizing motivation, using personal coping skills, and developing self assessment and reflection (9.1-9.3) #ucflae3414sp20

This beautiful RF PB tells a emotional story of Zuri struggling to manage the perfect hairstyle for someone special. After a few mishaps her dad saves the day. Accompanied with the animated short on matthewcherry.com this would be a perfect classroom RA.

Tabitha_H #UCFLAE3414SP20 responsivereads.net offers an awesome teacher resource that allows students during your read aloud to draw an emoji on their whiteboard at teacher appointed spots in the book and talking about how that situation made them feel. The UDL I would use would be ( 7.2 ), optimize relevance, value, and authenticity and the ESOL strategy would be #3, encouraging self talk. (edited) 5y

Zuri gets her hair done by her dad, and certain styles makes her feel certain ways, but today is speical and she has to have the most special hair ever. It‘s up to her, her dad, a tablet and some videos, but they will create an awesome do for an awesome day. I love that this book shows Dad doing hair. Readers need to see more of these things, and that traditional gender roles need not apply.
