Dreamers | Yuyi Morales
post image
Mehso-so

This is a book about a mother and child's journey from Mexico to the United States. It is a biography of the author Yuyi Morales. It highlights the struggles of being an immigrant and moving to a new country. The mother and child finds a safe place in a public library. They did not have to worry about a language barrier there. Eventually it is where they learned to read, write, and speak in English. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP This is a good pick for an author study, because students can learn about the author by reading this autobiography. Yuyi Morales is also connected to many other books that celebrate the Latin culture.
ESOL: Incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum (this book discusses the Mexican culture and immigrant experience)
UDL: 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (USA is a country many immigrate to)

ShardaeP Website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAiTFJaNiD8 (the author discusses her life experiences and the explanation behind symbols in her book) 5y
Tabitha_H I love the cover of this book. This would be a great book to read when exploring other cultures. UDL 7.2 is perfect. 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent post that incorporates all elements of the rubric. Using a video by the author is a wonderful resource to include in this post. I currently have a group doing a third grade social studies unit plan on Mexico and this book is being used! 5y

This is a biography of Harriet Tubman. It discusses all the aliases she went by through the years, as she was helping people. Most know how she was a conductor for the underground railroad, but she did so much more. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge (build off of what they already know about Harriet Tubman)
UDL: 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (connect to Black history and women's history)

A boy named Sergio has a friend named Ruben. Ruben's birthday is coming up and he wants a bike like Sergio's. However, his parents cannot afford a bike like that. Then Ruben finds $100 after a lady drops it. He is faced with a dilemma. He must make a difficult decision, keep the money or return it. This book discusses so many topics, like the value of money, poverty, and right or wrong. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses (there is much that can be deciphered in this book)
UDL: 9.3 Develop self assessment and reflection (have students connect themselves with the main character)

Adelita is a Mexican version of Cinderella. It is very similar to the version we all know, but this version includes the Mexican culture. The Spanish language is used throughout the book, along with the English language. I would use this book for Readers Theatre, because there are many characters the students can portray. Students who speak Spanish can share their beautiful language. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum (this book shows the Mexican culture)

This book goes through the day of a pet dog, as he waits for his human brother to come home. The dog observes much during the day. It has very simple language and short sentences, so it is great for the kindergarten grade level. This book can be used for choral reading. Students who are beginning to read will be able to follow along. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Promote cooperation (all students can read along to the book)
UDL: 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (ask students about their own pets or a pet they wish they had)
Website: https://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/choral_reading (this gives tips on how to effectively do choral reading and provides a book list)

This a biography about the musical legend Carlos Santana. It discusses racism, learning a second language, and his journey to discovering which instrument was right for him. I know him from the song “Maria Maria“. He plays the guitar so beautifully. I enjoyed learning about him. I would use this book as a read aloud with a Spanish speaking student doing those parts justice. A great pick for Hispanic Heritage Month. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Provide contextual support through audio, visual, models, demonstrations, body language, and facial expressions (can let the students hear some of his songs, how amazingly he plays the guitar)
UDL: 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge (give a mini introduction before reading the book and playing Carlos Santana's songs)

This book of poem discusses mythological creatures found in different cultures. Examples are the Chinese dragon, the Egyptian sphinx, and the Hindu Ganesha. The poems and artwork informs readers about the creatures. Such as, what they look like, what they are known for, and sometimes their origin. This is a good pick for a read aloud, because students can listen to how a poem is read. Before proceeding to writing their own poems. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum (this book includes many cultures, students from other countries can possibly identify some of these creatures)
UDL: 5.1 use multiple media for communication (A read loud done on YouTube has subtitles. This can be helpful for students who are hearing impaired). https://youtu.be/hpRbPL1QVfo
5y
amandar I love the ESOL strategy you picked for this book! I think this book can work well as both mirrors and windows for students to see their culture represented and learning about others! It can help ELs feel more comfortable when it‘s a topic that they know about. 5y

Originally this story was an award winning short film. It was eventually turned into a picture book. The book is a biography of Lily Todd, the first woman to design and fly an airplane. It shows how difficult it was for a woman to be recognized in that business. However, it also shows how perseverance and believing in yourself can take you far. It is a good pick for a read aloud to clarify some vocab and main ideas for students. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries (Lily Todd is an important american figure, but this book can be the start of learning about other important figures from different cultures).
UDL: 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information (play the award winning short film that preceded this book). It can be found on https://www.kristinayee.com/films.html
5y
DrSpalding Yes! You‘ve selected English learner strategy 28. Universal design principle 1.3 works well! How exciting to have an award winning short film to complement this text. 5y
DrSpalding The animated short is fantastic! What a wonderful addition to this post. Thank you! I watched the whole thing and I am fascinated by stop motion animation. Beautiful! 5y
ShardaeP @DrSpalding I thought the short film was very creative too 😃 It was interesting to learn about Lily Todd, as I do not recall ever learning about her before. 5y
DrSpalding Same. I had not heard of her either. I learned something and loved the animated short film! I can see why it won. There is an excellent app called Stop Motion animation that you can create more simplistic versions of movies like this. 5y

This is a science fiction book all about the moon, stars, comets, asteroids, and more. It is as if the readers are going on a trip to the moon and we are learning about so much. Examples are what to eat while in space, what to do for fun, and what we will see while up there. I have a better understanding of what Astronauts experience. This is a good pick for a digital storytelling, because teachers can use real photos of space. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP UDL: 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information (this relates to the digital storytelling using real photos).
ESOL: use preview/review activities (there are plenty of interactive moon related activities on https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/search/moon/
5y
Agavitt1 I‘ll definitely have to check this book out! I‘m realizing how important it is to incorporate books that promote science in the classroom. It hurts my heart to learn that this book was based on a real gorilla, who spent over 20 years of his life living in isolation (no gorillas for companionship) in a mall. In this book, Ivan's story is told by himself and the other different animals that also lived in the mall. It has a happy ending, but one that took a long time to happen. This would be a good book for students to read independently. It comes in different languages. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum (this book comes in other languages)
UDL: 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information (the movie is coming out this year)

Pete is having a bad day, but he is given some sunglasses that he feels make his day better. After the glasses break, he realizes he can have a good day without them. He does this by noticing great things in his environment. This book can teach children they are in control of their emotions and the outcome of their day.
#ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP UDL 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization (can be done during Readers Theater)
ESOL Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities (RT)
This book can be turned into a script for children to read. There are many characters for students to choose from. The lines would be short and simple. A pair of stylish sunglasses would be a good prop.

“Freedom Over Me“ is a historical fiction picture book. The author Ashley Bryan obtained authentic documents of slavery and chose one to base this book on. The document listed the enslaved people's names and how much they were being sold for. This author brought eleven slave's stories to life. It shows how life was for them. What they loved. How they endured abuse. Most importantly, how they dreamed of freedom.
#ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP This book is good for a Read Aloud. So students can listen and comprehend the story, instead of focusing on decoding words.

How Full is Your Bucket? is about a boy named Felix, who learns how to regulate his emotions. As well as, becomes aware of how he affects other people. This bucket concept is a metaphor, so this book would be best used during a Read Aloud or Think Aloud to make sure students will understand the story. The figurative language of a metaphor must be pre-teached.
#ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP This website gives a thorough definition of a metaphor. Of course, it can be adapted to be more kid friendly. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson975/Defnmetaph...
UDL 9.3 Develop self assessment and reflection: Felix learns how he thinks, speaks, and acts affects his mood.
ESOL Continually monitor students' comprehension: This book is best used with teacher involvement. The bucket concept can be confusing.
5y
amandar I think the topic of this book is very important to teach young kids. Emotional well-being and emotions regulation is way more important to learn about that it is given credit for so this book is different and seems really cute! I like the resource you included, it‘s informational. 5y
SequoiaC123 This book is crucial for students to understand how to appropriately express and regulate their emotions. As teachers, I think we should definitely be teaching kids to to express and regulate themselves appropriately because it is harder to learn how to do that as you get older. Also appropriately expression emotion positively impacts communication skills. (edited) 5y

Whoever You Are | Mem Fox, Leslie Staub

Whoever You Are is about the similarities and differences of people all around the world. The most important similarity is that everyone has a heart. This book teaches diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. For this reason, I believe this book would be great for building a tolerant classroom community. Also, because of it's written style, it can be used for independent reading. The terminology is simple and it is repetitive.
#ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP UDL 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols: The repeated words from the story can be added to a word wall. From there, activities can be done using the terms.
ESOL Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts: The vocabulary is very important to the main idea of the text. The terms can be taught explicitly beforehand.
