Hmmm. Rating this was tough. I enjoyed the humor and the mystery was fine if pretty predictable. What I did not enjoy was the almost pervasive sexist attitudes toward the young heroine March, and the often unfeeling/abrasive character of her guardian Mr. Grice. If you can get past those annoyances, this fairly gory murder mystery is quite good. Might even be worth me reading the next in series. 😊 3.5/5⭐️

Not sure how I‘m feeling about the book yet, but this passage made me laugh out loud! 🤣🤣

The shop window was barred and had no curtains or blinds. Above it was fixed a white board on which Ashbys Ironmongery was painted in black.

‘Lord preserve the apostrophe.‘ I pointed up. ‘It is going the way of the dodo.‘

‘Horrible squiggly things.‘ My guardian shuddered. ‘The sooner we are rid of them the better.‘

In the 1880s March is taken in by her godfather to avoid an impoverished life. He turns out to be a detective and she gets involved with the investigation of local murders

Still convalescing, so there's nothing for it but to drink tea and listen to audiobooks as I read along.
I'm enjoying this one quite a bit more than I expected to, tbh. Excellent narration, and Sidney Grice and March Middleton are great characters.

I finished this book recently, it was a new private detective series for me. It is the first one, set in London in 1882 with Sidney Grice who is a (personal) detective, then a Miss March Middleton who comes to stay with him and of course an Inspector Pound. All in all a good read, I didn't love it but would read more of the series though! #books

This was just a pick — entertaining enough for me to look for the rest of the series but nothing to rush out for. The *personal* —never “private” 🤨— detective is Sidney Grice, who is basically a horrible human being. The redeeming feature is his new ward, narrator March Middleton, who is snarky and smart. I could have done without the italicized flashbacks of her war experience; they made me go “huh?!?”

M.R.C. Kardashian crafts consistently intriguing mysteries. I love that his characters are flawed, misguided, societal outsiders, and yet each has redemptive qualities that I find endearing. This fall was my second reread of the series. I still was left in admiration of his wit, story telling, and subtleties in directing attention towards societal problems into his work.

Anyone else a fan?

This is a series called The Gower Street Detective and the main character Sidney Grice is the most famous (and eccentric) private detective. You can see similarities to the Sherlock Holmes/Dr Watson dynamic but Sidney's character is in no way a carbon copy of Sherlock. @ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

The Mangle Street Murders is the first installment in the Gower Street Detective series. It was an okay read; not disappointing but did not wow me either.

Sidney Grice is London's most well-known private/personal detective. He became the guardian for March Middleton. Together they investigated their first case when a woman was brutally slained.

I enjoyed this book. It was hard for me to read at times because of Sidney's superior attitude. I did not guess the ending which was surprising and satisfying. Overall it was an excellent book but I could not get beyond Sidney's attitude and matching behavior.

Eine klassische englische Detektivgeschichte gespickt mit zynischen und teilweise sehr schwarzen Humor.
Einem Vergleich mit Conan Doyle (s. vorheriger Post ) hält das Buch meinem Geschmack nicht stand aber für sich genommen, ist es ein gutes Buch.

Nach dem Ausflug in die Fantasywelt von "Das Schiff des Theseus" und einiger Sachliteratur will ich mich mal wieder dem viktorianischen England widmen. Mal gucken, was die Konkurrenz von #SherlockHolmes so kann. ?

It was too predictable and the main character was too annoying to really enjoy it. Oh well, at least it's off my TBR jenga pile. One more down, two more to go. #goingforgold

Dedicated to my granddaughter, Turtle, this is my 24in48 reading pile for next weekend. My first readathon since the MS Readathon in primary school, I'm looking forward to it immensely. Even though I won't be getting a box of dominoes this time.🤓

There's no shortage of mystery series riffing on the Holmes-and-Watson dynamic in Victorian London. What sets this one apart is its humanity. It honors that 1880s London was a real place, not a theme park, and its class divide had a very real human cost. Grice is callous; the narrative never is.

The clever clashes of wit between March and Grice are so so entertaining. A gin drinking, cigarette smoking heroine with a past is the perfect counterpart to the vegetarian, pompous, oh so clever personal investigator Grice. I completely enjoyed this one.

Loved the snappy dialog. Intrigued by March's backstory which will probably develop over the course of the series. The solving of the mystery was a little choppy for me. I will probably read the next in the series to see if there is an evolution. Quick and fun, lots of reference to Sherlock.

This book's pace was too slow for me. I loved March, but Sydney Grice was too Holmes-y for me.
I would recommend it if you are a fan of Doyle's Holmes. I, however, am not.
