Ody-C, Volume 1
Ody-C, Volume 1 | Matt Fraction
An eye-searing, mind-bending, gender-shattering epic science fiction retelling of Homer's "Odyssey" starting with the end of a great war in the stars and the beginning of a very long journey home for Odyssia and her crew of warriors. The journey to Ithicaa begins HERE, by Matt Fraction ("Sex Criminals") and Christian Ward ("Infinite Vacation," "Olympus").

Ancient Greek myth/epic + sci-fi reimagining + gender bend + glorious art. Fantastic. Very gory, but so is the source material; a good deal more sex than I remember in the original. I will continue in the series, but I think only one more book is out so far?

Hoo boy, was this a struggle to read. My expectations for this one may have been too high (or it really is just that bad, lol).
Concept is very cool: gender-bent retelling of the odyssey set in space! 🤩
The execution of the concept is uneven at best. So unfortunate, cause I usually like Fraction‘s work. I probably won‘t continue the series, cause I can‘t imagine it improves as it goes along.

vivastory Thanks for the review. This has been hanging out on my graphic novel TBR ever since I saw it on a best of the year list 3y
Soubhiville I have a coloring book with this name…. It‘s the most bizarre coloring book ever. I‘ll have to try to remember to bring it to you next weekend. 3y
Eyelit @Soubhiville ooh, please do! I‘m sure it is based on this series, and I‘m curious what images they selected 😄 3y

Bailedbailed

Yikes! It‘s been a while since I bailed on a graphic novel! The art and colouring was beautiful; and the concept of a gender flipped Odyssey in space had potential. But man, that execution was a flop. I don‘t even know what I partially read and near the end, I didn‘t care.

This gets a so-so rating for me on art alone. The most beautiful colors I've ever seen in a comic. The story (a gender-bent scifi Odyssey retelling) is poorly executed and I won't be reading any further with this book.

Also completed the first week's reading for #theodysseybuddyread....forever behind.

Abailliekaras Yay! Well done. I‘m still running behind. Promised myself I‘d catch up this weekend. 🙄 7y

Holy CHRIST, guys. What a comic. WHAT A COMIC!!! Gender-bent, sci-fi adaptation of Greek mythology. And the art is truly the best I have ever seen in a comic, hands down. Wowwwwwwwww. Matt Fraction is a comic writing legend.

Handmade_Redhead Just finished Sex Criminals vol. 2, which is also by him. I'll have to check this one out. 7y

So I really loved the whole idea of Odyssey in the Sci-fi setting. But my enthusiasm was quickly vanished, because the execution was done really poorly. The whole story feels too dry, dialogue and storytelling are sometimes quite impossible to follow. So while I'm a bit curious to see what will happen to the whole crew of ODY-C, I don't think I'll pick the second volum
But artwork is bloody gorgeous.

The artwork was really weird. On some pages it made it hard to tell what was going on. Basic knowledge of greek mythology and the Odyssey keeps you on track. Typically, I dig gender-bending, but I finished this not giving a crap if Odyssia gets home. It was alright, some parts I found interesting, but I likely won't try and find the next volume.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk My brother got this for me for Christmas a couple years ago and it is still To Be Read. Lovely to look at though. 8y
Sue I had the same problem. The art work is gorgeous though. 8y
night_shift @TobeyTheScavengerMonk yeah, it is OK to look at, just ignore the words haha @sue glad to hear I'm not the only one. It got such good reviews. 8y

Meh. I was excited about this one but the art wasn't really up my alley and the story was kind of boring. Colorful, though! And yay gender-bending. #24in48 #17hours

Ekkross I felt exactly the same about this. 8y
OceanCityMama @Ekkross it's a damn shame. 8y

I did not love the story, specifically the language that was used. But the art was completely amazing.

I was attracted to this book by its premise, a gender-reversed, genre-shifted retelling of the Odyssey, but unfortunately it just didn't grab me. This may partially be the art style, which, though impressive, made it difficult to interpret the action at times. I also didn't feel connected to Odyssia or the gods. I'm glad to see this level of originality, but don't see myself continuing.

The joys of being fun-employed!

BookMusings Do you really read for work? 8y
bookminx @BookMusings - I wish! I've been unemployed for about eight months and a friend spun it as fun employment so now that's what I call it 😉 8y
BookMusings @bookminx that would definitely be fun! 8y

Book bingo square - mythological creature on cover. Actually, the cover is something like a spiral galaxy, but between Greek gods & cyclops & naiads & satyrs & whatnot, this comic is chock-a-block with depictions from myth.

I like the idea of this gender-swapped science fiction retelling of the Odyssey better than its execution. Reminded me of Paul Pope's 100% and Fiona Staple's planet Sextillion from Saga. Prefer Gareth Hind's rendition of Homer.

The art is beautiful and the story has a creative twist, but I suspect it'll seem too highly stylized for many readers. I liked it though. I would suggest you have a good background in Greek mythology going in, particularly The Odyssey, though I guess the title should have already alerted you.
