After falling way behind during #theodysseybuddyread I finally finished. I really liked this translation. The use of iambic pentameter gave it a rhythm that captures the sense of oral storytelling. She also made beautiful phrasing choices that made this epic come alive. Hadn‘t read it since high school so liked going back to it now.

Looking forward to everyone‘s thoughts on The Odyssey! I loved Emily Wilson‘s translation. I‘m inspired now to read more Greek mythology, the Daniel Mendhelson book about the Odyssey, & another one ‘why homer matters‘. And the Greek islands beckon! 😜🏖 What was your favourite part? Next read?

Wonderful! Odysseus is on a quest to return home to Ithaca & wife Penelope. He endures the Trojan war, battles w Cyclops, the suitors & more along the way. A story that defines heroism: he was victorious at Troy, but now relies on his wits more than brawn. Gods intervene. A sense of the Greeks‘ attitudes to fate & revenge. Hospitality, loyalty & human capacity for friendship & war. Excellent translation, lively & direct. #theodysseybuddyread
