The author of Let the Right One In and Handling the Undead serves up a masterful cocktail of suspense laced with bizarre humour in a narrative that barely pauses for breath. On a winter trip home to the island of Domaro, Anders and Cecilia take their six-year-old daughter Maja across the ice to visit the lighthouse at Gvasten. And Maja disappears. Leaving not even a footprint in the snow. Two years later, Anders returns to Domaro to confront his despair. He slowly realises that Maja's disappearance is not the first inexplicable tragedy to strike the islanders. Nor is everyone telling him all they know; even his own grandmother, it seems, is keeping secrets. And what is it about the sea? There's something very bad happening on Domaro-something that involves the sea itself. 'A magician of genre fiction...between monsters outside and demons within, Lindqvist covers the haunted waterfront.' Independent

The second Lindqvist I‘ve read - the first being Let The Right One In, of course. Harbour is not a horror. Sci fi and mystery. I enjoyed it, hooked from@the start and did not feel as long as it is. Good character development, I enjoy the Swedish Archipelago setting, it‘s a good read. I do think he cheated somewhat and the end felt a bit too easy, but it didn‘t ruin it for me. Looking forward to reading another.

A Halloween read about a missing girl and a nameless, watery horror terrorizing a tiny island town. Lindqvist is compared to Stephen King in eight blurbs, and although I haven't read enough King to judge the accuracy, it has a King-ish length of 500 pages. I would have enjoyed a shorter version more: the problem for me was all the flashbacks ruined the forward momentum. But the writing is excellent - it cultivates a great, haunted atmosphere.

Billypar I also want to introduce the two distractions to my reading and Litsy posts of late: their names are Jem and Scout, brothers who are 3.5 months old. You will likely be seeing more of them 😺😺 #catsoflitsy 3y

Pickpick

Been meaning to get into this author for a while now. Wasn't disappointed at all. I have heard comparisons of him as a Swedish Stephen King which were pretty on point. There was some fantastic world and community building in this novel. I did want more backstory and explanation on the antagonist, but I tend to prefer it when things are more explained. Going to have to pick up his other novels now!

"One ordinary winter afternoon on a snowy island, Anders and Cecilia take their six-year-old daughter Maja across the ice to visit the lighthouse in the middle of the frozen channel. While the couple explore the lighthouse, Maja disappears -- either into thin air or under thin ice -- leaving not even a footprint in the snow." #SetInWinter #DeckTheShelves

I should really pat myself on the back for enduring the entirety of this book. Had this been my first time reading Lindqvist, I would have never returned. The book is nothing more than pointless backstory, the author felt like he couldn't decide what direction to take the book in, and by the time I finished it, I realized I didn't care about any of the characters, or if they lived or died.

90% through. The closer I get to the end, the less I care. Had I not loved other novels by this same author, I would have given up about 100 pages ago. I don't know what happened, but it seems like a severe case of ADD prevented him from a great book.

I'm not too sure how I feel about this one. I have read Handling the Undead and Let Me In, both of which are amazing. However I am 75% through with this book, and it doesn't hold the same charm that his other books provided.

I'm not quite sold on Lindqvist yet. His horror is just too weird and not scary enough! I listened to this while painting the walls of a room and I have to admit I pretty much just shut down during the last hour or so of the book...

Marchpane Definitely more unsettling than scary. I agree his books aren't really horror, despite having vampires, zombies, ghosts etc 8y

Supernatural, Swedish, small town horror. I loved it. Perfect pick for the cold months.

tricours I haven't seen this in Swedish anywhere, but I see it all the time on Litsy in English! 8y
Kirstin @tricours -Interesting. They make it sound like he's so popular there! Maybe because the book is 8 years old, they have moved on to bigger and better things? 🤔 8y
tricours I had no idea it was so old! I don't live in Sweden though, and here in Norway I feel like the only Swedish lit they care about is the never ending crime books... I've got 3 Ajvide audiobooks narrated by the author available on my Scandinavian book streaming service though, so I'll listen to this one once I finish Middlesex! 8y

Kirstin I hope you enjoy it! My great grandparents were from Sweden so I have a love of all things Scandinavian. Any Norwegian horror recommendations? 😊 8y
tricours @Kirstin you forgot to tag me so I didn't see this message! The only Norwegian horror author I know of is Nikolaj Frobenius, have you heard of him? 8y
Kirstin @tricours Sometimes I forget. I haven't heard of him but if he has English translations I will try and find them! Thank you so much! 👍 8y

Here are some of my books with #whitespines for today's #AugustPhotoChallenge. I took this photo when the sun was going down so the lighting isn't great. Unfortunately there are a lot of books here that I haven't read yet. While pulling these books I had momentary guilt over having so many that are unread, but then 2 hours later I was checking online to see if my local B&N had specific books in stock. Apparently my guilt didn't last too long. 😂

Just skating in for my #funphotofriday contribution. Forgive me, I've been sleeping all day with a chest infection still😷This is definitely in a cold place, a tiny island off the coast of Norway, a man loses his daughter whilst on a trip to the islands lighthouse. I love the new wave of Scandinavian fiction, Jo Nesbo & Henning Mankell are particular favorites, & Peter Hoegs Miss Smillas Feeling For Snow is one of my go to books.

Texreader Me too!! I've read quite a bit about Norway because my husband is from Bergen, born in Trondheim and his family is still there so I've visited a lot. I love reading the Scandinavian writers when they are in English. I still haven't learned Norwegian. 🇳🇴 8y
Lizpixie @Texreader I'd love to go there to see the northern lights. Most Scandinavian languages are really difficult to learn aren't they? 8y
tricours This book takes place in Sweden 😉 8y
