Interesting sequel that is actually a prequel, we get to know the stories of the Jack & Jill we met in the first book.

I enjoyed this novella diving into Jack & Jill‘s alternate world story. Part the story of two girls who are pigeonholed into what their parents want them to be. They discover a portal into a dark realm of monsters and find a different version of themselves. This is such a unique series that are quick reads. I look forward to the next book! 4⭐️

Bk5 of May is also done. Novellas are great if you have a few of them to read quickly! The 2nd in the Wayward Children series, this is Jack & Jill‘s story, of their trip through their door to The Moors, a place of beauty & horror. One twin is in the vampires castle as his daughter, the other in the windmill as the mad scientist‘s apprentice. Brilliant story🖤🩶 #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #Pantone2023 #ReadySetRead

Book 134

Down Among the Sticks and Bones is part of McGuire's Wayward Children series. It's the story of Jack and Jill's life, both before and during their time in the Moors. McGuire is witty, and the novel, which could stand alone, is a simple and enjoyable read. As in other fairy tales, the characters and story are a bit shallow. Something about the book, though, makes writing feel compelling & attainable. I'll continue reading the series.4⭐️s

Part of the Wayward Children series, but a stand alone read - so if you don't want to commit to an entire series read this book - it is the story about how Jacqueline and Jillian became Jack and Jill - well written, engaging - loved it!

I think the children chosen as the focus of the story determine the tone. As such, it's no surprise that this was not my favourite, and yet no deterrent to me continuing in the #waywardchildrenseries . I still love the way the author writes, and the illustrations in this volume are exquisite.

This is the second in this series but it takes place before the first book. Why? Every ending is a beginning. The story is genius for a lot of reasons. This one was about identity, because the main characters aren't just sisters but twins. The story raises interesting questions about how we become who we are, how much what we look like influences those around us, and do we really decide who we are or are we just making the best of it?

While I didn't like this one as much as Every Heart A Doorway, it's still a solid, beautiful read. It gives the backstory of Jack and Jill, how they went down a staircase and entered the Moors. I liked the bittersweet nature of the book and the love\hate relationship of the sisters. McGuire has such a lyrical style that you could pull a quote from almost any paragraph.

First February #roll100 done!

I really enjoyed this one, not sure why it took me so long to continue this series. I could have read a lot more about the moors and their time there, but the novella length was great for the fairy tale tone.

Jack and Jill's backstory is told in this book. Unfortunately for them, they had parents who should not have been parents. The things that drive the girls are revealed and helps us to understand the choices they've made. ⭐⭐⭐💫

GondorGirl The Moors are so creepy! I really loved the back story in this one, though it broke my heart how much those parents destroyed those girls. 3y

This second book in the Wayward Children series went into depth about Jack and Jill's childhood and their time spent in their other world. I liked the way it emphasized not pigeon holing children into stereotypes. The book was enjoyably creepy and disturbing. A great way to end Halloween!

Second in the series and I devoured it. I loved the deep dive into Jack and Jill's story! I definitely missed the other characters from the first book, but I'm sure they'll be back. This one ends just as the twins return to the 'real world'. I especially loved Jack's character journey and learning why she acts as she does. And the sibling dynamics of jealousy and misunderstanding, yet still caring no matter what is really well written.

Seanan McGuire delivered more than enough to solidify my adoration for the whimsically dark world of the Wayward Children. As I was reading and tabbing I noticed that if I didn‘t stop I would run out of tabs. That‘s just how beautiful and impactful it was! I am so beyond thrilled to have more magical and poignant stories to venture back into with the rest of this bewitching series. I will simply leave you with this, READ IT!!!

diovival Welp! I think I have the first book in this series at home. Sounds like I need to dig it out and put it at the top of my tbr. 3y
pinkpistachio Yess, @diovival!!! I just adore this world and characters oh so much! It seems that a lot of people struggle with the first one especially if they‘re not accustomed to the weird and speculative but it‘s so worth it to stick it out. It‘s like if we got a deep look into how Alice must have felt after coming back from Wonderland. I really hope you enjoy it!! Let me know what you think :) 3y

Second in McGuire's "Wayward Children" series, about children who have returned from portal-fantasy worlds. This one digs into the backstory of two characters from book one, twins who wander into a grim world of vampires and mad scientists and make it their home. I quite liked this one.

This was my #DoubleSpin for June.

#bookspin Book 2 of the Wayward series. Twins Jack and Jill journey to the Moor world. Looking forward to the next book in the series (already borrowed from the library ❤️ Libby app)
Fav line: if our sympathy is more for the first of them, well we are only human; we can only look on the scene with human eyes, and judge in our own ways.

I love alternate world books and the creativity of the worlds McGuire has introduced so far is binge worthy.

This book tells Jill and Jack‘s story in the Moors. I again love the writing and rich description of this world. There‘s a cautionary tale wrapped in here about subjecting your children to staunchly defined gender roles and denying children autonomy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #Fantasy #Recommendsday #MagicalRealism #WaywardChildren #LibrariansofLitsy #Novella

Loved, loved, loved this book. This made me feel all the emotions. I felt bad for the twins and how they grew up. This was definitely more of a Jack book with Jill as most of a back burner character. But I felt the most bad for Jill until about the end. A great read. Definitely one of my favorites.

I've read where this is a lot of people's favorite of the 3 books currently, and I can understand why. For me, this setting was everything! The Moors was eerie and dark and just what you expect from every horror movie ever. I think it's easily my favorite portal world so far (though I think I'd love The Halls of the Dead just as much if we ever get to see that world fully).

I loved the characters and their relationships with each other.

This turned out a pleasant surprise. Other than having read the first novella in the series, which I also loved, I went in blind regarding this second installment in the series. I didn‘t realize it was a prequel, and it‘s one that works incredibly well, so much so that I want to reread the first novella. Only gripe is that the start spends a lot of time in the lead up to Jack and Jill finding their door.

So deliciously grim and gruesome, this second installment in Seanan McGuire‘s Wayward Children series brings us along with twin sisters Jack & Jill to the land of the Moors. I think at this point Seanan McGuire can take me anywhere she wants! I love this book for the way it explores the emotional contexts that define us and especially for showing how someplace as menacing and monster-infested as the Moors can become “home.”

TieDyeDude I accidentally read this one first, but I think it's still my favorite in the series 4y

A very different take on the story of Jack and Jill, in this rendition, they are two sisters who find a door to a different world, each must chose a master, one chooses comfort while the other chooses science and hard work. This story shows that decisions have specific paths that they must fullfil and that something's are meant to happen as they unfold.

Great short novella.

WOWZA. I am incredibly fortunate that my family was (largely) supportive and encouraging when I came out as trans, but I have quite a few loved ones whose parents and family members behaved a lot more like this. This description of conditional love was so familiar that I actually gasped aloud.
