"Being raised in an unstable household makes you understand that the world doesn't exist to accommodate you, which, in Hannah's observation, is something a lot of people struggle to understand well into adulthood."-from The Man of My Dreams In her acclaimed debut novel, Prep, Curtis Sittenfeld created a touchstone with her pitch-perfect portrayal of adolescence. Her prose is as intensely realistic and compelling as ever in The Man of My Dreams, a disarmingly candid and sympathetic novel about the collision of a young woman's fantasies of family and love with the challenges and realities of adult life. Hannah Gavener is fourteen in the summer of 1991. In the magazines she reads, celebrities plan elaborate weddings; in Hannah's own life, her parents' marriage is crumbling. And somewhere in between these two extremes-just maybe-lie the answers to love's most bewildering questions. But over the next decade and a half, as she moves from Philadelphia to Boston to Albuquerque, Hannah finds that the questions become more rather than less complicated: At what point can you no longer blame your adult failures on your messed-up childhood? Is settling for someone who's not your soul mate an act of maturity or an admission of defeat? And if you move to another state for a guy who might not love you back, are you being plucky-or just pathetic? None of the relationships in Hannah's life are without complications. There's her father, whose stubbornness Hannah realizes she's unfortunately inherited; her gorgeous cousin, Fig, whose misbehavior alternately intrigues and irritates Hannah; Henry, whom Hannah first falls for in college, while he's dating Fig; and the boyfriends who love her more or less than she deserves, who adore her or break her heart. By the time she's in her late twenties, Hannah has finally figured out what she wants most-but she doesn't yet know whether she'll find the courage to go after it. Full of honesty and humor, The Man of My Dreams is an unnervingly insightful and beautifully written examination of the outside forces and personal choices that make us who we are.

Pickpick

This is not my favorite Sittenfeld book by far, but anything she writes is solid. This one can be a little depressing at times, but I think interpretation of the ending makes for a great discussion.

Photos from my morning walk down to Fisherman‘s Park. ♥️ #BookFitnessChallenge

So proud of myself for hitting my daily goal of 7,000 steps before 9am! And I have a plan to walk Boulevard Lake at 1230 with a friend. This is going to be a good day! Now I‘m just holding out for the weather to get nicer! It‘s only +4 right now.

So far I‘m enjoying this audiobook, but I‘ll have to pause it soon to get in some #NetGalley reviews.

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 6y

Up and at em at 645 this morning! I‘ve got my audiobook on and my flavoured water for the next few days all set to go!

I am an absolute sucker for flavoured water, and I have a list of about 150 different combos 😂 My favourite combo is 2 oz pure cranberry juice, lime slices and fill remaining with cold water.

I‘m currently listening to The Man of My Dreams by Curtis Sittenfeld. What book are you you guys staring off with?#bookfitnesschallenge

jenniferw88 I'm starting with this one. I like plain water best, and couldn't have the grapefruit one as it interacts with my transplant medication. 6y
alisiakae You need to - I mean, can you please - share that list! ☺️ 👏👏 I was debating combining strawberry and cucumber today. I love fruit infused water! 6y
althaeria So much delicious water! 6y

Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft I sure can! I can type it up later ♥️ 6y
Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft my other main favs are Orange & Basil Leaves, Grapefruit & Rosemary, and Raspberry Orange. I‘m allergic to mint, so that takes out a lot of available combos for me 😌 6y
Bookwormjillk Love it! My favorite is cucumber and mint because I can kind of fool myself into thinking it‘s a gin and tonic 😜 6y
ReadingSusan I am also listening to a Curtis Sittenfeld book but it‘s Atomic Marriage. 6y
Reecaspieces I love lemon, mint, cucumber with orange slices all in one. Keep giving me ideas. I love the cranberry idea. Yum! 6y
Reecaspieces @Bookwormjillk hahaha! Whatever gets you through! 6y
wanderinglynn Wow, those all sound delicious! 6y
Clwojick @Bookwormjillk 😂😂😂 Now I really wish I wasn‘t allergic to mint!!! 6y
Clwojick @BookwormAHN I haven‘t seen much of the show, but I‘d love to give the book a try. Let me know how it goes! 6y
audraelizabeth Cranberry lime looks delicious. 6y
BookwormAHN Will do 😺 6y
alisiakae Rosemary and grapefruit sounds delicious! 6y
Read4life I‘m going to have to try raspberry and orange. Sounds perfect for my tastes. 💙 6y
dariazeoli Love this! 6y
guinsgirlreads This is great!! 👍🏻❤️ 6y
TK421 The cranberry lime water looks great! I'll have to try it. 6y
Clwojick @TK421 I normally have a jug of it in the fridge at all times! It‘s amazing. Lime juice works fine too, if you don‘t have fresh lime to slice. 6y

Posting this because, while this has never once occurred to me, I know EXACTLY what she means.

Curtis Sittenfeld's #sophomorenovel exemplifies the lacklustre follow-up to breakout success. In spite of some impressive advanced praise from Alice Munro on the back!
(Some of the themes in this one are picked up/recycled in Eligible.)

Cinfhen Never even heard of this one☝️ I enjoyed Prep & American Wife but thought SisterLand was awful 7y
merelybookish @Cinfhen I agree. I really like Prep and American Wife but found Sisterland kind of dull. Apparently she's working on a new novel about Hillary Clinton if she hadn't married Bill. 7y
Cinfhen Oh that sounds juicy! I'd like to read that 7y

charl08 Oh I loved this one. Not as much as Prep, of course. 7y
batsy I liked Prep. And I really disliked Eligible, not least for some dodgy race and gender politics in her use of a black character and a trans character 🙁 7y
merelybookish @batsy oh yes, 💯 %! It was liberal tokenism at its worst! I have lots of thoughts on that book and CS in general. (Started an article on her but it didn't get finished.) 7y
batsy @merelybookish Oh yes please! I hope you do finish it so we can read it 👍😇 7y

Enjoyed this but think I would have liked it a lot more in my 20s (a while ago now!).

Loved Prep and this one has been on my "to read" shelf forever. Looking forward to this one!

Herschelian Just finished this. Have ambivalent feelings about the book mainly because of the main character who was so unremittingly negative about herself. She seemed to want/expect men to be special when in fact they are just as flawed as women are. Then the ending seemed rather bleak and unresolved. 6y
