Goodwill find. I've read Lady Susan but not the others. And sadly The Chiltern Classics don't have this one yet. I'm also sad this cover has some sticker damage. I wish stickers were either banned on books or that they used a less sticky glue. Great picture of the rider. That horses face though. Yeesh!

Aimeesue Those glues are terrible. You can loosen most of them with oil, as long as the cover is intact and won't absorb it. Dampen the tag and rub the paper part off, then dab a little oil on the spot. Most of the rub off after a few minutes. Signed, A fellow hater of price tag adhesives on my books. 😋 2y
bookishbitch @Aimeesue oh I know. I use goo gone to great effect usually but this one someone had already pulled it up and tore it. 2y

#pemberlittens #thewataonsreadalong today I picked up at the ball and ended with the Osbornes leaving. So many interesting things. The ball begins and the Edwards‘ are not fans of Mr. Musgrave but Miss E is enjoying dancing with the soldiers. So is Emma. Then everything halts as the Osborne‘s arrive. Lord Osborne and his entourage including his clergyman Mr. Howard. Miss Osborne has promised to dance her 1st 2 dances with Mr. Howard‘s👇👇

MicrobeMom Nephew Charles Blake, but she stands him up for some Captain or other. Emma stands in and make this sweets boy‘s day. Now everyone‘s attention is drawn to Emma. She dance with Mr. Howard, who she really esteems. Mr. Musgrave and Lord Osborne as sad to lose a turn to dance with Emma and the Osborne‘s abruptly leave. 2y
julieclair I‘m liking Emma more and more. And I‘m not a fan of Miss Osborne. (edited) 2y
Ruthiella Emma‘s dancing with Charles was adorable. 😃 2y

#pemberlittens #thewatsonsreadalong Today I picked up when Elizabeth discussed who Miss Edwards‘ will dance with and read until tea arrives at the Edwards‘. We find out that brother Sam is in love with Miss Edwards but she will be dancing with Captain Hunter. Both of which are unsuitable matches because they are below her station. When we meet the Edwards‘, we find the ladies very proper and boring. Mr. Edwards is very talkative. There is👇

MicrobeMom Is a long discussion about who Emma looks like. Miss Edwards think she looks like Sam (maybe she likes him back) while Mr. and Mrs. find it an insult to say she look anything like him. Their complexions are vastly different. Then there is discussion of Emma aunt, and her poor second marriage to an Irish captain. Followed by warning of ever marrying soldiers (1st or 2nd). Maybe a warning for Miss and Capt. Hunter. 2y
julieclair I wonder if we will get to hear more about the aunt and the Irish Captain? 2y
MicrobeMom @julieclair, I agree! Why did she marry him? Especially if you knew she would have to give up Emma!! 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if she didn‘t know he would make her give up Emma? It sounds like that didn‘t happen until after the wedding. Perhaps he‘s just a gold digger like Willoughby! 2y

In case you need to purchase some half - boots. And the style is called Emma.

#pemberlittlens, #thewatsonsreadalong I will be doing two posts for each version. This is the unfinished Austen edition. I read until we learn that Emma is 19. Emma and her eldest sister Elizabeth are traveling to the Edwards‘s so that Emma can attend the ball. Elizabeth warns Emma is the dashingly charming rake, Tom Musgrave, who has flirted with all the Watson ladies but is not serious about any of them.

There are 4 Watson sisters,

While I was planning on rereading Sanditon in December a part of my #ayearofjaneausten. I couldn't resist joining in with #PemberLittens @sprainedbrain Readalong. Mostly I listened to the 12 Chapters on Audible. Really liked the narration of this edition by Emila Fox. This pick is for audiobook. Tomorrow I'll post something about story.

This volume contains one finished novel, Lady Susan, which was not published in her lifetime, and two unfinished fragments, The Watsons and Sanditon. They cover the three periods of Austen‘s writing life.

Also, this completes my reading of Austen‘s work. I can now say that I‘ve read everything she‘s written (some several times)! Still, I know I will visit Jane time and time again.

Suet624 Impressive accomplishment. 3y

Love Lady Susan. So unique to read a book in the form of letters. Adds suspense in her case. The Watsons fragment is very much in line with the plot arcs of Austen‘s completed novels, and I liked that Cassandra included the end of the intended story in her memoirs. No such luck for Sanditon. Sanditon has a unique seaside setting with health-nervous characters, but it was starting to get a little over the top.

This was my second time reading Lady Susan, Austen‘s epistolary novel (told in letters), and I think I enjoyed it this time even more. It feels like such a stark contrast in tone with her other novels. It centers around such a devious woman. And being told in the format of letters makes it feel even more sinister and uncertain.

Enjoyed this little collection. Lady Susan was amusing, The Watsons made me think of Mansfield Park and I really wish we got the full Sanditon.

My nr 4 #bookspinbonanza 😅 Lady Susan is funny and shows Austen's intelligence and sarcasm, I wished the Watsons had been longer - it was very Austeny and enjoyable. Sanditon I liked the least, probably because it ended just as I felt we were getting started.

Picked this one up because I wanted to read Sanditon before I started watching the PBS series. I enjoyed the chapters that were written and wished for more. I‘m not sure Austen would have continued the plot as it is in the series. A little risqué, but ?‍♀️. The Watsons has some characters that I found unlikable, but I liked the story. Lady Susan is a despicable person. I saw the movie a few years back which translated well to film. I‘m not sure

Palimpsest In this case that the epistolary format was the best, but I read the intro as to Austen‘s influences and maybe why she chose it. I adore all of her novels and am happy to have read all these stories. I only wish she had written more. ❤️ 5y

I adore Jane Austen 😍 but this was a strange read. Lady Susan is complete, but is written in an epistolary style - very unlike Austen, although the normal characteristics are there. The other two parts here are unfinished novels, which is the main reason why I wouldn't rate this higher. They're both SO Austen, and I want to know what happens!! They both evoke the worlds of her completed novels, I only wish they'd been finished 😔 Worth a read!

I revisited an old favorite after watching the film Love & Friendship, which is an excellent adaptation of Austen's Lady Susan. Love & Friendship is the best adaptation I've seen, second only to A&E's P&P with Colin Firth. Austen's witty dialogue sparkles in Lady Susan!

Abailliekaras Kate Beckinsale was just beautiful in the film! 8y

I love Lady Susan!!! She's so scheming and wonderfully unaware of what a horrible person/mother she is. Definitely a change from Austen's other heroines, who can be scheming at times (I'm looking at you, Emma), but actually do have good intentions.
