Overdue Life of Amy Byler
Overdue Life of Amy Byler | Kelly Harms
"A laugh-out-loud funny, pitch-perfect novel that will have readers rooting for this unlikely, relatable, and totally lovable heroine, The Overdue Life of Amy Byler is the ultimate escape--and will leave moms everywhere questioning whether it isn't time for a #momspringa of their own." --New York Journal of BooksOverworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City.Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and--with a little encouragement from her friends--a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amy's heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind. But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream she's ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

#MotivationalMonday @Cupcake12

1) a tiny school conference for Chemistry on Wednesday and I need to get cat food/kibble
2) forensic scientist/medical examiner but I put a spanner into this myself, I was lazy at school, didn't get enough credit points to get into medicine at uni, would have had to acquire extra credits by waiting for two years - studied sth else
3) not yet. Maybe visit England or Scotland with my daughter again
4) one of several

Cupcake12 I don‘t think I have the stomach for no.2 and I don‘t know how you do number 4. I can only read one book at a book! Thanks for taking part and have a great week x 8mo

I finished my last book of the year!

Amy‘s husband left her and her two kids 3 years ago. He went to Hong Kong for work and just decided not to come back. So when he shows up wanting to spend a week with the kids, Amy isn‘t enthusiastic about the idea. But she allows it and goes to NYC for a continuing education conference about literacy.

Wonderfully bookish, with thoughtful relationships. My fave character was the teen daughter, Cori.

The author referenced Litsy in this book! How cool?!! I don‘t know if she has a Litsy handle so I can‘t tag her.

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler is full of second chances, relatable characters with the right amount of quirk, and the escapism that all of us moms need. Moms will relate to Amy in so many ways and will want their own momspringa. This is a great summer read. The romance is *chef‘s kiss* but it‘s so much more than that. It is also an exploration of how moms lose themselves in parenting and how Amy finds herself again.

I enjoyed this fun book when I read it a couple years ago. I think Amy‘s husband had more of a classic #midlifecrisis when he left her for a younger woman & moved to Hong Kong, but I think her #momspringa trip to NYC is a bit of a cure for Amy‘s own crisis.

nichollinlove I was pleasantly surprised by this book. There was more substance there than I expected. Seven Day Switch by her is equally as good! 3y

I enjoyed Overdue Life, but it suffered from my own high expectations from the outset, which I realize is entirely my own problem. I‘d been told if I liked Where‘d You Go, Bernadette?, I should read this one. I did…and found it was “not as:” not as funny, narratively creative, sharp (or smart), or layered. And it‘s kind of hard to beat Bernadette as a protagonist. But, had I read it as simply a fun summer read, it would‘ve suited me just fine.

Started this one today. Going to try and get some reading in today because tmrw will be a no go for sure. Spending the day at a BBQ/pool party. Who knows... maybe I'll sneak some listening time in and just be anti-social. Ahhh... the life and struggles of a bookworm.

I‘ve read a few “mom‘s need a break” books lately, though not intentionally, but this one was great! It was a bit far fetched, most of us would never have the connections to get to do what Amy did but I enjoyed living it through her!!!! Book 33 in 2021

I finished! Amy, a single mom spends the summer in NYC after her husband who left the family returns to try and make amends. She finds a new side of herself while she‘s there and really grows to like this life. Throughout she wrestles with the guilt of taking time for herself and wonders how she is any better than the husband who left his family. The book was good, the parental guilt and the desire for a break would hit home for any parent. 3.75⭐️

I am not a single mom but I do get the whole feeling as most moms do of the need for a break (especially after a year of quarantine). It was a decent, fun, quick read which is what I need to take a break from the endless pile of academic papers to be read. One more book off my bingo board #bookspin

Wow. I really think she did an amazing job taking serious subjects and presenting them in a very well written but fun-to-read way! This made me reflect so much on my own experience of feeling alone in my marriage and my parenting, and my own future as a divorced mom who would prefer not to be alone forever. I think this could also be a great discussion read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This lighthearted contemporary book follows Amy Byler, mother of 2, whose husband returns after a gap of 3 years. John wants to spend time with his children and Amy agrees to go to New York to spend her new-found alone time. I enjoyed this book on supportive fulfilling female friendships, the importance of self-care, and the different aspects of motherhood. There‘s also a reference to Litsy and other bookish stuff as Amy is a school librarian.

Isn't it lovely when you like the books you get for free on Amazon?

That was the case with this one.

A single mom/librarian/book nerd spends the summer away from her kids in New York City.

Her friend works for a fashion magazine that ends up running a feature on 'momspringa.'

Cute and enjoyable, but not earth-shattering.

PS - The smoke in the picture is just a sad fact of life in my region right now. Grateful we haven't had to leave our home

So fun and satisfying! Unrealistic in the way the best movies are, where everything falls into place in an almost magical-fairy-godmother-type way...but that's part of the charm! Who wouldn't want all-the-things and their ex's credit card or someone else's business footing the bill!?
