Unto Us a Son Is Given
Unto Us a Son Is Given | Donna Leon
11 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
In the 28th novel in Donna Leons bestselling Commissario Brunetti series, Brunettis father-in-law, the Count Falier, urges Brunetti to investigate and intervene in the seemingly innocent plan of the Counts best friend, the elderly Gonzalo Rodrguez de Tejeda, to adopt a much younger man as his son. Under Italian inheritance laws this man would become heir to Gonzalos entire fortune, a prospect Gonzalos friends find appalling. For his part, Brunetti wonders why the old man cant be allowed his pleasure in peace. Not long after Gonzalo unexpectedly passes away, one of Gonzalos oldest friends, just arrived in Venice for the memorial service, is strangled in her hotel room. Now with an urgent case to solve, Brunetti is drawn reluctantly into the long-hidden mystery in Gonzalos life that ultimately led to murder. Once again, Donna Leon brilliantly follows the twists and turns of the human condition, reuniting us with some of crime fictions most memorable and enduring characters.

Getting some reading time waiting for @WanderingBookaneer to get her new phone. I love #CommissarioGuidoBrunetti and his own love of reading.

Had to read for bookclub. I‘ve read one other of hers and didn‘t like it. Didn‘t enjoy this at all. Long useless descriptions which sounded like a screen script not a novel. However after the discussion I can see why the person who picked this , enjoys her books. Just not for me. Nice feeling after book club when I realise I can start a new book. I did this morning. An American Marriage. @MrsMalaprop

Hmmm, no. Not for me.

Forced myself to read this for book club. The person who chose it loves the series (this is number 28!). I found it tedious, sexist and boring.

I had planned to write a more diplomatic review, but then decided to do a @shawnmooney 😂👍. #noonegottimeforthat

P.S. Sorry, it‘s been a tough week.

Zelma Well, that isn‘t cool to pick a book so far into a series. That alone would annoy me and color my reading of it. 5y
TrishB @Zelma me too! People that don‘t care about reading in order don‘t appreciate the stress it does to the rest of us! 5y
howjessicareads I liked it, but it‘s not my favorite in the series for sure. And if it helps, it was a good one to read somewhat randomly — since it gives a ton of new Falier family history. :) 5y
Rissreads What a waste of your precious time at the moment! But on the upside, what are you going to delve into next? 😊📚❤️ 5y

Ok, so I have to read this by tomorrow night for bookclub at my place. I‘m up to page 43. I can do this 👊. #currentlyreading

JennyM You can do this...the 🍩 will help (looks delish) (edited) 6y
CarolynM I'm familiar with this situation🙄🙂 Of course you can do it! 5y
Jeg I was still reading it at 6 o‘clock. Did find it hard to finish. I kept finding other things to do. Usually the other way around with books and me! 5y

Started reading this yesterday. I know it‘s out of order, but it was their so I grabbed it.

rretzler I started reading this series last year at a pace of one every other month and I‘m enjoying it. I like that most books don‘t end in the traditional sort of justice found in most mysteries. Welcome to Litsy!📖🎉 6y

I just didn't want this to end. Leon's lyrical prose is perfect . Brunetti's father in laws best friend wants to adopt a son, an adult son. Brunetti is asked to look into this "son" . And the story develops from here. The descriptions of Brunetti's thoughts, her words that tell of conversations, you can almost smell the food Paola serves to her family. Can't recommend this series highly enough.

Freespirit Ooooh sounds good... 6y

I just need to say, her writing is beautiful. Her words are lyrical. Example: "love trumps principle" and so many more thoughtful and well put together sentences. I feel like I'm sitting in the palazzo , walking the streets of Venice , indulging in the food prepared.... I never want her books to end.

kspenmoll Always feel immersed in Italy when reading this series! Love your review! ❤️ 6y
Crazeedi @kspenmoll me too! I never want her books to end. I can't put them down. Such a great series 6y
