Roses | Leila Meacham
Spanning the 20th century, the story of Roses takes place in a small East Texas town against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries, industries controlled by the scions of the town's founding families. Cotton tycoon Mary Toliver and timber magnate Percy Warwick should have married but unwisely did not, and now must deal with the deceit, secrets, and tragedies of their choice and the loss of what might have been--not just for themselves but for their children, and children's children. With expert, unabashed, big-canvas storytelling, Roses covers a hundred years, three generations of Texans and the explosive combination of passion for work and longing for love.

Roses | Leila Meacham

[with cruel disdain] 'You'll adjust to it, Mary. You'll adjust to all the losses in your life because you care only for the one thing that cannot leave you. Betray you? Most certainly. Let you down, suck you dry . . . absolutely, but it will never leave you. In a way, you're luckier than any of us.'

quote
tokorowilliamwallace
Roses | Leila Meacham

God must have a Machiavellian turn of mind to devise the cruelties inherent with growing old. At the very least, the elderly ought to be allowed an accurate perception of time . . . to see the years as the stretch they really were, not be made to feel they had all gone in a flash and the beginning was no more than a short distance back. At the end, the old and dying ought to be spared the feeling that life had just begun.

tokorowilliamwallace @Desha I picked this up thrifting, but it's not the first in the series. From what I've read so far, it's probably not necessary to read the other first, but there's just context in general that is built upon with this volume. Not sure if you're one who likes to read in order. I have no qualms about reading series out of order in sampling arbitrary later volumes I find and am interested in. I do it *all the time.* I'm in the minority there. 2y
Desha @tokorowilliamwallace okay I‘ve checked out all of her books…I will definitely be reading some of them 😂 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @Desha What's causing the interest for this author? 2y
Desha @tokorowilliamwallace I have relatives spread all over Texas from one side of my family…I love my Texas relatives for their down to earth friendliness and hospitality…sometimes wish I lived there but I love the beauty of the California coast too much!! 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @Desha I think I have interest in finding and reading more grand historical multigenerational domestic fiction, so this hits that spot/craving. The blurb compares the series to the grand sweep of Gone With the Wind, which I think is why I picked up (besides the fact that thick, lengthy paperbacks are very tempting for me even though I'm too much a glacially-slow and scattered reader for them---I can't event tell you how many 500+ page books I'm in 2y

@RaeLovesToRead my riff on the bourbon a la creme, using bourbon cream, amaretto, and creme de cacao. Littens, which Southern/historical fiction or celebrity bio/memoir in general should be paired with it? Somebody's post got me in the reading mood for it.

RaeLovesToRead That looks awesome!!!! 😀 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead You're up next for amourous amaretto adventures in reading. 3y
RaeLovesToRead Haha! Is that a new hashtag? Next time I come up with an amaretto based concoction I'll be sure to tag you 😀 3y

tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead Not sure we could get many others on board with such a hashtag, but I look forward to your entries and engagement. Do you have any slow-burn dramatic, epic domestic (dynastic/multigenerational) Southern or historical fiction recs for me? Do you read in those genres? I just got back into what I think is Gothic romance (Edwardian-era) again after a while last night (at 800 pages). 3y
RaeLovesToRead A book that comes to mind is Fall of Giants by Ken Follett (the first of the Century trilogy) it's historical, dramatic, there are romances, and I understand the sequels involve the next generations. I plan on re-reading it soon. Is that the sort of thing you mean? 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead Sure; I'm new to Southern and historical fiction, mostly, but am in the mood for some. I did find a multigenerational Follett volume at a little free street library, but I was going to get to it after some other current reads. We could possibly do a buddy read! Are you planning on re-reading the entire trilogy? 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead I have two older Civil-War-era/themed ones (found thrifting), and the Leila Meacham one I've tagged and quoted from on here. And I plan on getting to Joyce Carol Oates' A Bloodsmoor Romance after completing her Salem-setting The Accursed, both semi-chonkers. And I hope to begin Outlander (or one of its later volumes, as volume six is set during the American Revolution and *is* a veritable chonker), by recommendation. 3y
RaeLovesToRead I haven't read the sequels yet. I plan to re-read the first and then finish the trilogy later in the year. I loved it the first time round. Not heard of many of the others you mention 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead Well, let me know when you plan on doing the re-read! Although it will probably be more difficult to find thrifting, since it's so popular; I think I've only found his other, smaller thrillers. We could do a buddy read of Outlander if you want, too! 3y
RaeLovesToRead I'll let you know when I get round to it! I've got so many books on my TBR and doing so many challenges this year.. also I'm a slow reader with a load of chunksters on the go 🙈😄 I've heard of Outlander - will look it up. 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead Don't worry, I'm a slow and scattered reader, too! No shame there. Which challenges are you doing? 3y
RaeLovesToRead PopSugar 2022 (#pop22), Author a Month, #roll100, BookSpin Bingo and trying to work my way through Robin Hobb's back catalogue... 3y
tokorowilliamwallace @RaeLovesToRead I should be do so, too! I was intrigued by the thick Hobb volume I found at the airport 2 years ago, but it's the ninth one in the Farseer and Fitz saga... 😅 3y

Day 9, #beginswith final:

“But as Mary's attorney, he had no choice but to choke on his silence and hope the fallout from this unexpected turn of events would not be as explosive as he feared...What a sad mantle to Mary's memory. What a tragic ending to the special relationship...For a second he considered the wastebasket, then shrugged and weaved to the documents cabinet, where he filed away in its proper place the last regards of Mary DuMont.“

“ 'Pink Roses? What a pithless color for such a noble flower. No, gentlemen, I would suggest white and red only. The presence of any other implies the possibility of the unthinkable. Among men of honest intentions and goodwill, there is no mistake, no error of human judgment, no faux pas, that cannot be forgiven...They will be a reminder of my duty to our friendship, to our joint endeavors...if ever I should offend you, I will send a red rose...'“

Seriously, just what I need in this season, and tonight---a good, heavy, thick miring in fatigued reflecting upon life and consequences.

“ 'Amos, dear, you came into our lives when our stories were done. You have known us at our best, when all of our sad and tragic deeds were behind us and we were living with our consequences.' “

Festive dress for Light Up [insert town] this evening!

🤔Most may see this as a beach or spring read---but with the mood influence of McKinsey consulting and the history of business development in the U.S.---I think a big multigenerational story involving tycoons, industry magnates, and powerful families may be in order as proxy for Scrooge and the Holiday Season behemoth looming. 😷Or one by Follett....

Thoughts or suggestions welcome.

I had to really think about this one!
1. I love Rose's and daisies
2. I can't think of one. I was in a training recently and the trainer kept saying vorocious and I cant figure out if he meant voracious or something else because voracious doesn't make sense in the sentence.
3. Football or gymnastics

I‘ve never heard of this author before, but the cover caught my attention, and the blurb caught my interest. Ended up spurlging on buying this at Costco!

Has anyone read this?

Crazeedi Not read, but sounds good! 5y
Hazel0303 I‘ve had this on my list for a year when I discovered it for the first time as well. The page count is pretty big so that has been the reason I have held off. Looking forward to seeing what you think! 5y
JacqMac I really liked it. My mom borrowed it and really liked it, too. 5y

I have mixed feelings about book art, but these #roses are really pretty. This is a neat idea for a bride who is a big reader! If a book is old and can't be read anymore, then making their pages into art gives them new life. #literarylove @vkois88 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

vkois88 I'm the same way! I can't stand most of it bc it hurts my heart... but these really are pretty 6y
MallenNC @vkois88 I‘m thinking these pages were printed for this purpose. That‘s what I‘ve decided at least. 6y
vkois88 That's what I've decided I'd do it if I were to do ever do book art... copy the page and use that 6y

A Southern epic filled with love, marriage, war and death that spans over three generations. I devoured this book the way I would devour chocolate, I highly recommend reading it.

I love the stories Meacham wove of love, loss, and redemption! Spanning several generations, she created a space for me to escape reality and jump back in time to when cotton was king in East Texas.
