Knife of Dreams
Knife of Dreams: Book Eleven of 'The Wheel of Time' | Robert Jordan
The Wheel of Time turns, and Robert Jordan gives us the eleventh volume of his extraordinary masterwork of fantasy. The dead are walking, men die impossible deaths, and it seems as though reality itself has become unstable: All are signs of the imminence of Tarmon Gai'don, the Last Battle, when Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, must confront the Dark One as humanity's only hope. But Rand dares not fight until he possesses all the surviving seals on the Dark One's prison and has dealt with the Seanchan, who threaten to overrun all nations this side of the Aryth Ocean and increasingly seem too entrenched to be fought off. But his attempt to make a truce with the Seanchan is shadowed by treachery that may cost him everything. Whatever the price, though, he must have that truce. And he faces other dangers. There are those among the Forsaken who will go to any length to see him dead--and the Black Ajah is at his side.... Unbeknownst to Rand, Perrin has made his own truce with the Seanchan. It is a deal made with the Dark One, in his eyes, but he will do whatever is needed to rescue his wife, Faile, and destroy the Shaido who captured her. Among the Shaido, Faile works to free herself while hiding a secret that might give her her freedom or cause her destruction. And at a town called Malden, the Two Rivers longbow will be matched against Shaido spears. Fleeing Ebou Dar through Seanchan-controlled Altara with the kidnapped Daughter of the Nine Moons, Mat attempts to court the woman to whom he is half-married, knowing that she will complete that ceremony eventually. But Tuon coolly leads him on a merry chase as he learns that even a gift can have deep significance among the Seanchan Blood and what he thinks he knows of women is not enough to save him. For reasons of her own, which she will not reveal until a time of her choosing, she has pledged not to escape, but Mat still sweats whenever there are Seanchan soldiers near. Then he learns that Tuon herself is in deadly danger from those very soldiers. To get her to safety, he must do what he hates worse than work.... In Caemlyn, Elayne fights to gain the Lion Throne while trying to avert what seems a certain civil war should she win the crown.... In the White Tower, Egwene struggles to undermine the sisters loyal to Elaida from within.... The winds of time have become a storm, and things that everyone believes are fixed in place forever are changing before their eyes. Even the White Tower itself is no longer a place of safety. Now Rand, Perrin and Mat, Egwene and Elayne, Nynaeve and Lan, and even Loial, must ride those storm winds, or the Dark One will triumph.

Bk6 of July is done. The 11th book in the WOT, it‘s the last one written by Jordan before his death. The Pattern is unraveling, the dead are walking, bubbles of evil are everywhere and the land is dying. Rand is struggling with his madness while trying to force peace so the Last Battle can be fought together. But the Seanchan stand in his way so he tries for a meeting with Tuon. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #ChunksterChallenge2023

This is definitely one of the better books of the series. It had great pacing and even more character development. Things seem to be moving into place as Tarmon Gai'don draws nearer.

I finished the last of my presents this morning, so I can finally get back to making stuff for myself! I hunkered down with my audiobook and my first fox face mitten this afternoon. The second one‘ll be knit in reverse so the full face appears when I put my hands together. #audioknitting

I‘M liking my KNIFE OF DREAMS reread. I‘ve only read it once, so I remember the highlights but not the details. Some of what I remember might be from the next few books, too; I read them all in a rush back then and they kinda blended together. #audiobaking

The end is nigh! Book 11 was originally supposed to be the penultimate book in the series, and it shows. All the building tension of the previous few books gets a release valve here, as pretenders to various thrones are dispatched with, wandering armies are crushed or absorbed by rivals, and old enemies form uneasy alliances as Tarmon Gai'don looms on the horizon. This is the last book Robert Jordan finished before he died, and 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...I'm interested to see how Brandon Sanderson transforms the detailed outline Jordan left behind into the final three books, and whether there's a noticeable difference in language or tone. 3y
AutumnRLS I was really pleased by how Sanderson wrapped things up. His pacing is much faster than Jordan's because it has to be. But it's not too fast, as TOR gave him three books instead of one to finish it. He really seemed to understand all the characters and their motivations. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Can't wait for the Amazon show! 3y
The_Penniless_Author @AutumnRLS Just read the prologue to book 12 and like what I'm seeing so far. You're right, it still mostly sounds like Jordan but moves a lot quicker, which I guess shouldn't be surprising since (as far as I understand it) Jordan had written much of the last book along with the outline before he died. I've only heard good things about the ending, so I'm excited for this final stretch! 3y

A few things about the eleventh novel:

Tuon and Rand deserve to be locked in the same room and forced to live with each other; never to be heard from anyone else ever again.

Finally, the biggest disappointment is that, even though this is deep fantasy, the protagonists would consider and in fact make temporary alliances with a group of people that value enslavement and torture. The ends justifying the means is not always an acceptable excuse.

Bingo! (column 2)

Definitely one of the best books in the series, so far. So much character development has taken place over the course of the series and the plot just kept hurtling forward in this book.

Very excited to be past the "slog" and three books from the end of the series!

Took me too long to read this one, not because it is bad, it is amazing really, but I think because I'm scared that I won't recognize the characters I love from now one. This is the last one written by Robert Jordan.

After a few books that I have not loved as much, this one was encapsulated everything I love about this series. The plot lines that were dragging on and on were finally tied up and there was a lot of action and some fun twists. I even got teary at one point. This was the last book Jordan wrote before he passed so I am a little nervous about starting the next in the series. Still I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Moray_Reads I think this is the last one I read. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I just read what happened in the last books on Wikipedia 😳😅 6y

BarbaraJean @Graywacke I‘m with you on that! My husband kept telling me “Just get through Winter‘s Heart... it gets better...” 😂 And 12-14 were fantastic. 7y
jfalkens @BarbaraJean I'm glad to hear they are good after Sanderson joined 😊 I've been nervous of it since the beginning. 7y
Graywacke @BarbaraJean exactly! 😂 7y
Graywacke @BarbaraJean @jfalkens Sanderson did a great job. No worries. It‘s not the exactly Jordan, of course, but it‘s still his story and characters stay true. I think Sanderson was a lucky and maybe perfect fill-in. 7y
Graywacke @BarbaraJean @jfalkens - As a little aside, Sanderson actually posted on LibraryThing about how he was preparing his writing. He posted a little about what he was doing. He came across as a really dedicated to getting it right. (edited) 7y
jfalkens @Graywacke @BarbaraJean I just read the forward and it seems he was the perfect choice. Sanderson was a fan of the series from the beginning(1990) and eagerly awaited the next new book, was crushed when Jordan died and says he wants to stay true to the story Jordan wrote and the notes left for him. 7y
BarbaraJean @Graywacke @jfalkens I was impressed at how well Sanderson matched Jordan‘s writing style. Even to the point that certain annoying writing tics remained, at least here and there! (Pet peeve: if a women crosses her arms, it‘s always “underneath her breasts.”🙄😂) I‘d be interested to know Sanderson‘s process & how much was already sketched out when he stepped in. I definitely got the sense from the foreword that he was committed to Jordan‘s vision. 7y
Graywacke @BarbaraJean i had fun trying to convince myself that I could tell what was Sanderson‘s and what was salvaged from Jordan‘s leftover drafts. 😊 7y
knittedgnome Yay!! So glad they stay good! 7y
jfalkens @knittedgnome lol I'm always nervous it'll the end, I've been burned by series too many times. But so far they have all been 5 stars and I'm 49 pages into The Gathering Storm and it's good so far. 7y
jfalkens @BarbaraJean @Graywacke I got that impression from the forward too! I had heard that Sanderson grew up reading the series(as they came out) and loving the series and it inspired him to become a fantasy author! I feel like if Jordan couldn't complete the series Sanderson was a great choice, from what I've heard from people who've finished the series. I'm 49 pages into book 12 and it was as good as the last 11. 7y
jfalkens @BarbaraJean @Graywacke so far lol I'm really hoping this series stays good. As long as it stays good I could already see from early books(1-3) that it would be a favorite of mine. 7y

At Bk11 of #TheWheelOfTimeXmasReread just three books to go before the grand finale. This is the last book that Robert Jordan finished himself before his death in 2007, I would‘ve loved to read his version of the end but it was not to be🤷🏻‍♀️Strings are starting to be made into a pattern in this book, Egwene begins as a captive, Rand is ambushed & Mat is still with Tuon until a letter from an old “friend” pulls him into a dangerous rescue.❤️💙🧡

My favorite: reading on a gloriously rainy day. Skipped watching the inauguration because I just can't. What I can do is post info on the proposed defunding of the NEA & NEH. There are many important issues to fight for; the arts can get swept under the table easily. Yet the arts are crucial in this fight & I'm so tired of that being the first thing to get axed.
