A solid YA anthology of stories about black teens by black authors that captures a wide range of experiences. As with all short story anthologies, I enjoyed some stories more than others. Favorites include “Oreo†by Brandy Colbert, “The Ingredients†by Jason Reynolds, and “Kissing Sarah Smart†by Justina Ireland. None of the pieces were bad or felt out of place, though. A quick read, too. TW - homophobia, suicide, mental illness, sexual assault

If your someone like me who thinks reading is a complete waste of time and just don‘t feel like acting finishing an entire book than this book is perfect for you. If your also someone who is interested in stories about black history and modern day micro racial agressions told be the point of view of teenagers than this book is perfect for you. Black enough is a collection of short stories written by 18 different authors outlining their ....

Nanakofidarku Experiences and constant struggles associated being an African American teenager in America. The book outlines the constant struggle with the concept of “black identity†across America and the subjective Ness of the measure of how “blackâ€one and how the concept of being black closely relates to gang culture. 4y
Nanakofidarku A reoccurring motif present within the collection of short stories is the constant reference to blackness and feeling “black enoughâ€. Another reoccurring motif within the novel is the metaphor of being an “Oreo†which is a direct metaphor of the concept of “blacknessâ€. In one of the stories for instance a young girl moved to Brooklyn, New York. (This story is based from the authors experience). As a young girl she enjoyed science fiction films 4y
Nanakofidarku ,disco music and John Stamos. During this time her idea of blackness was limited to what she had known prior in her traditions in Hati. It wasn‘t until she had been called “Oreo†and attended high school within America that her idea of blackness began to change. As she observed the trends and costing African AMERICAN you followed she began to associate “blackness†to hip hop culture. 4y
See All 7 Comments
Nanakofidarku The concepts of “being black enough†and “blackness†become apparent when she begins to question her identity as well as what it truly means to be black providing the inspiration to the other short stories. This motif is substantial through the collection of short stories as it provides the complete plot to all the short stories and the entire novel. The nature of the novel is the perpetuation of “blackness†being gang and hip hop culture related (edited) 4y
Nanakofidarku *****( the authors name is Ibi zoboi). If you like books that outline real life experience especially ones you can relate you than you will love this book 4y
MissYaremcio I'm adding this to my to read list! It looks incredibly powerful! Have you finished the book yet?! 6/6 4y

I loved this. Each story tells of a unique perspective, of someone that doesn't fit into the mainstream notion of "blackness." These characters were relatable and wonderful. The stories were interesting and different from what I've read before. One of the best story collections I've read this year ?

Chelleo It was fun “shopping†for you...well, technically I only chauffeured @LeshaMac around while she did the official shopping 😂🤣😂 Since I didn‘t swap, I had to live vicariously through her. 5y
EchoLogical @MeganAnn It really is so I can't blame her. LoL 5y
EchoLogical @Chelleo You didn't swap?! I should've sent you the physical copy of Kindred but I kept forgetting to so I sent the Kindle version. Plus, with this move happening next week, your girl is on a budget from here until I find another job. 😂 5y
EchoLogical @riversong153 She has a shop on IG but I forgot to follow her before I left for work this morning. I'll share it with you once I get back to the house. 5y
Chelleo @EchoLogical No, It‘s easier for me to just manage the swap and I don‘t want to put pressure on someone being matched with the organizer. And I was also prepared to send a package in case someone was left empty handed and that would‘ve been more of a burden if I swapped too. I appreciate the ebook very much and I plan on treating myself to a physical book soon. 5y
EchoLogical @Chelleo I hear you but I'm claiming you as my match for next year's swap in advance. LoL. 💗 5y

I‘ve never read YA short stories before but this was very enjoyable! As promised, this gave an enormous variety of visions of young black people‘s lives in America. Some were political, some not, some focused on family or romance. I loved how many of them were tiny bildungsromans that took me on a journey with the characters as they learned difficult, important things. I really recommend!

I love short stories and how the good ones leave you feeling satisfied at the wholeness even in a few pages.

Every single one of these stories was fantastic. As the subtitles says, “Stories of being young & black in America.â€

I‘ve read many of these authors before, but I‘m placing holds for books from the authors I didn‘t know. Since 12/17 of the authors identify as Black & female, I‘m still considering this #readingwomenofcolor2019

I just finished listening to this on audio even though I‘ve had it on my dresser for months 🤗 My favorites were the stories by @leahs_mark @lamargiles and @coebooth There were many more good ones too!
•
One thing that bugged me about the audio was that the gender of the speaker didn‘t always match the gender of the main character and that was hard to turn around sometimes. Short stories on audio are good for driving though, that‘s for sure!

As a grown white lady, I‘m probably not the target audience for this one. I still thought it was wonderful. The stories are about kids grappling with various aspects of their identity- usually along the lines of “What does it mean to be black and...?†There have always been a few black and multiracial students in the predominantly white schools where I teach. This offered some insight on their experiences.

Amazing set of YA short stories! At the Tucson Book Festival a number of writers mentioned they were currently reading this book, so I had to pick it up. I am not really a short story fan in general. I did like a lot of the stories in this book. They are timely, varied, and make you think. Some though didn‘t catch me as much as others and some I wasn‘t overly fond of the endings.
