This is an excellent collection of indigenous Canadian stories. There are some powerful stories and mostly excellent art. The stories are mainly chronological, and I didn't really connect with the ones set in the 1800s, but once they break into the 20th century, there is so much discussed that I never knew. Unfortunately, it seems Canada was just as reluctant as the US to grant rights and agency to indigenous peoples, if not more so.

As with many short story anthologies, there were some stories I liked better than others. There were a few I just didn‘t understand and a couple that didn‘t really end; that is, they just abruptly stopped. I really liked the stories of the WWII Indigenous soldier, Meech Lake/Oka, the Sixties Scoop, and the environmental one of the pipeline running through Dene Territory (the NorthWest Territories). Cont in comments...

LibraryCin The illustrations were in colour, and I liked some more than others. Each story did have a short introduction (just a few paragraphs), and a timeline to go with it. 8mo

This graphic novel anthology brings to light the stories of Canadian Indigenous Peoples and their history of colonial resistance. As someone not as familiar with Canadian history, I appreciated the introductions and timelines before each story. These were all compellingly told with varied art styles represented. Overall, a vibrant, informative, and powerful collection.

An incredible collection of indigenous Canadians' histories. Each comic starts with an author blurb and a timeline of events present in or influencing the story. Canada's history of abusing indigenous people is sickeningly similar to how things have gone for the native people of the US. Whether you're familiar with indigenous history of Canada or want to start somewhere, this is an excellent read. #Comic #NonfictionComic #IndigenousHistory #Canada

It has been a while!
Nice mix of story and art- indigenous stories, punctuated by real life events, cool commentary and wickedly eye opening timelines- a good move to truth Abe reconciliation.

A beautiful collection of 10 graphic stories of First Nations history from Indigenous creators. Fascinating histories, some of which I'd heard of but many I was ignorant of (lots of Google rabbit holes!).

My favourite of the collection was Rosie by Rachel and Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley with stunning illustration and colours by GMB Chomichuk. #ReadCanada #Nunavut @MsMelissa

TheKidUpstairs @MsMelissa I've read a lot of Canadian authors, just not as many set in Canada itself. 4y
MsMelissa I have NB, Nfld and PEI left. I‘m the same as you - lots of Canadian authors on my shelves but many of their books are set elsewhere. 4y
ShelleyBooksie Kathy Reichs has a book set in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Alan Doyle has wonderful non-fiction set in Newfoundland. 4y

Wow this graphic collection of 10 First Nations history stories in Canada is a powerful read. I knew some of the stories and characters but others were a revelation. Great idea to have a timeline running throughout the book. Bravo!

This is a graphic anthology about the experience of the Canadian First Nations over the past 150 years. This was an impulse grab for me at the library but I really "enjoyed" it. I was completely oblivious to the way that they've been treated even as recently as the 90s and this book was a beautiful and heartbreaking education. If you aren't a fan of graphic novels you may still enjoy this one as its nonfiction and beautifully illustrated.

MsLeah8417 Yesss!!! I just put this in my TBR pile for Hoopla for next month. Thank you! 5y

This is a pick because of content rather than execution. It‘s a collection of stories by various authors and artists of episodes involving indigenous people in Canada‘s past, present, and future. I found there was a marked difference in quality between the different stories, chiefly based on whether the writer had worked in the graphic medium before. I did learn a lot, though, and I think it was a worthy read.

Argh, I forgot to do my #BFCr2 week 5 check in yesterday!

📚 As of now I have 3/7 books read. I‘m on track to have three more half books by the end of next week. Not enough! So I grabbed some graphic novels from the library to attempt to get up to 7.
🏊🏻‍♀️ Had a great swimming week including a visit to a local outdoor pool yesterday! Need about 3500m to finish out the challenge.

I was 17 in line at the Edmonton Public Library, so what a treat to find this #graphicnovel on shelf at the Banff Centre. It‘s an outstanding collection of stories by talented #Indigenous writers like Chelsea Vowel, Richard Van Camp & Katherena Vermette. What an appealing way to present aspects of Canada‘s history that need to be more widely-known! The timeline prefacing each piece is a valuable component, as is the extensive endmatter. #Canadian

Lindy The amphitheater in the background of my photo is where Susan Aglukark‘s concert will take place. Sadly, I will be back home in Edmonton by then. 5y

As Indigenous people, we all live in a post-apocalyptic world. The world as we knew it ended the moment colonialism started to creep across these lands. —Alicia Elliott, Foreword

I haven‘t seen many people talking about this graphic anthology by and about Indigenous people. It‘s gorgeous, and the foreword has already kicked my ass.
