Élodie doesn't shy away from showing her struggles to be a supportive parent when her late teens early20s child comes out as trans. Opening the book with information about gender, identity, and sexuality does a lot to show how far she has come since then. This was an interesting overview of the start of the hiphop music genre. I learned a bit, but so much went over my head due to constant name-dropping with little to no explanation of why that person is important. If you aren‘t already familiar with all of these music artists and DJs, you won‘s get as much out of this book. Arai discusses many gender and sexuality topics related to aging that I haven't always thought about. He especially talks about issues he experiences as an intersex person who was assigned female at birth, always felt more masculine, and found out he's intersex and has physical masculine and feminine characteristics that clash with social expectations. #LGBTQ #Intersex #Manga #NonfictionComic #LGBTQIA

This was too much fun and must be such an absolute delight for kids who like this series! I just picked this up on a whim and it has some great science info that‘s highly digestible for the target age group. I even learned a few things! I love picking up middle grade comics (especially nonfiction) on a whim. I‘m usually not disappointed. Today I learned that the part of bird legs that bends backwards isn‘t a knee, it‘s their heel. That whole section is part of their foot structure! I‘m not sure if I missed this in school or if it‘s just one of those details you have to find out later. #Science #NonfictionComic

I don‘t think I‘ve read any of the books in this series, but if they‘re anything like this one they‘re pretty good! The subject matter was well planned for a kid audience without being oversimplified. A pretty alright memoir. It was interesting reading the author's complicated relationship with her mom, trying to connect with her Japanese relatives, harassment working in hostess bars, and mental health struggles. The whole thing reads a bit like a collection of webcomics about the author's life, some of which are one-off comics and others follow an extended narrative. My husband was delighted when he discovered this book at a book store and was so excited to show me, only to learn I read it for a college course! After reading it, he really connected with it because of his complicated past and other reasons. An incredible collection of indigenous Canadians' histories. Each comic starts with an author blurb and a timeline of events present in or influencing the story. Canada's history of abusing indigenous people is sickeningly similar to how things have gone for the native people of the US.
