Save Me the Plums
Save Me the Plums: My Gourmet Memoir | Ruth Reichl
112 posts | 106 read | 4 reading | 62 to read
Trailblazing food writer and beloved restaurant critic Ruth Reichl took the risk (and the job) of a lifetime when she entered the glamorous, high-stakes world of magazine publishing. Now, for the first time, she chronicles her groundbreaking tenure as editor in chief of Gourmet, during which she spearheaded a revolution in the way we think about food. When Cond Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America's oldest epicurean magazine, she declined. She was a writer, not a manager, and had no inclination to be anyone's boss. And yet . . . Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed, forever, the way we eat. Readers will meet legendary chefs like David Chang and Eric Ripert, idiosyncratic writers like David Foster Wallace, and a colorful group of editors and art directors who, under Reichl's leadership, transformed stately Gourmet into a cutting-edge publication. This was the golden age of print media--the last spendthrift gasp before the Internet turned the magazine world upside down. Complete with recipes, Save Me the Plums is a personal journey of a woman coming to terms with being in charge and making a mark, following a passion and holding on to her dreams--even when she ends up in a place she never expected to be.

Gourmet was never the food magazine that drew me in but this was such a delight to read. I really enjoyed the commentary around the photography and how it shifted during Ruth's tenure (I looked up that cover with the woman in pink holding berries *shudder*.) But perhaps my favourite part was the shoestring Paris trip, I just want to jump on a plane and eat!

Ruth Riechl‘s venerable memoir surrounding her days at the helm of Gourmet magazine is fantastic. The behind the scenes of Gourmet as it struggled to survive the economic crisis of 2008 is entertaining & bittersweet. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys food writing or chef memoirs in particular. Bonus: there‘s a sprinkling of recipes in the book that sound wonderful.

My husband ate all the plums, so nectarines are the best I can do. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I am not a foodie, nor do I like to cook. Not even a little bit. But I was completely captivated by this memoir by Ruth Reichl, who was the last editor of “Gourmet” magazine before it ceased publication in 2009. That‘s the sign of a great writer. Definite pick. 👍🏼👍🏼

Another delightful memoir and my May #DoubleSpin! Renowned chef/food critic Ruth Reichl took on Gourmet Magazine as its Editor in Chief during the magazine‘s last decade & reignited its fervor. You can‘t help but savor her eloquent writing as well as her compassionate leadership. “I don‘t know everything,” she admits. But Ruth sure knows the secret of success: “Hire people smarter than you...and trust them.”👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This was a lovely audio book to listen to, Ruth Reichl reads it herself. This is a memoir of her tile as editor in chief at Gourmet magazine and I liked hearing all the behind the scenes stuff. I made the spicy Asian noodles expire Ruth makes at home ( easy and delicious) and I think I will make the final recipe too ( German apple pancake)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ruth Reichl has become my favorite food writing, with her joyous descriptions of all things culinary (and some things that aren't.) This particular book is laced with a bittersweet thread, which is expected given the subject of the end of Gourmet magazine. But this book is truly about a woman finding herself in a position she doesn't feel prepared for, finding her own confidence, and excelling.

With fond memories of eating plums while hiking with my dad, and seeing so many picks of this book on my newsfeed I had to stack it. I‘m the family standout for my inability to cook, but I did live in a culinary district for 5 years where I learned of the James Beard Award. To add to my surprise and delight this book focused on NY publishing - my favorite book setting!

Another mesmerizing memoir from Reichl, this one covers her time at the helm of Gourmet magazine. Her descriptions of food and people are equally delicious. I‘d recommend reading this one after Garlic and Sapphires.

“It‘s good for a writer to know that the words she‘s so carefully crafted today, will be wrapping someone‘s fish bones tomorrow.”

Has anyone else seen these “skip the line” items on Libby lately? 1 week holds, and you can only have 1 at a time, but how amazing is this? They‘ve just started popping up over the last 2-3 days, and I am FLIPPING OUT over them. The waits for popular audiobooks at my library is always 6+ months. I never get my hands on anything even relatively new through this app, so this addition is an absolute game changer.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Suet624 I haven‘t had this happen yet but I‘m excited about it. 😀 5y
Clwojick @Suet624 I tend to come across them in the What‘s New section. I check back a few times a day, and there‘s normally at least one a day. 5y
TheShaggyShepherd I get my library loans through Overdrive but the library keeps advertising for Libby. Is there a big difference between them? 5y

Clwojick @IvoryLunatic I think they‘re pretty similar, but I find Libby easier to use. Overdrive is accessible on the computer though, and I don‘t think Libby is. 5y
Clwojick @marleed Agreed! If it‘s something super popular or something that I had to wait forever to get I always try to get through it quickly to shorten up the length others have to wait. 5y
Suet624 Good to know. I never look at the new ones because I hate waiting weeks for a book. 5y
ljuliel I found these in Subjects, then SKIP THE LINE . There are 2 libraries I have cards with that have a pretty good turnover in this area. The others, I never find anything in them. Pretty handy dandy. 5y
mom2bugnbee Yes! This has happened to me several times over the last two months. I wonder if the algorithm is such that you're more likely to get another if you use it & return it in a timely fashion? I'm currently reading the newest Jodi Picoult because of this feature! 5y
mom2bugnbee Btw, mine have happened with books that I have in hold, but aren't due to come to me for some time. 5y

✅ Walked between 8k and 12k steps a day (actually I beat that on several days, and since I‘m feeling okay I won‘t try and cut back)
✅ Tried meditation 2x
✅ Did pretty well with my bone health diet, but could improve here, especially could eat more veggies

Focus on drinking more water and eating more veggies 🌽

When I first started, I had a tendency to want to prevent thoughts from entering my head because I thought that's how it worked. A yoga teacher told me to allow the thoughts to flood in, but to let them pass through like clouds in the sky, not stopping or forcing. That's when I found the stillness comes in the space in between the chaos. 💜 5y
