Before posting my July list I need to get caught up on June. This is the third book from Ruth Reichl that I have read. This one was my #bookspin pick for June. I loved that this one includes a ton of recipes. I have marked a few to try myself. She loves food and it is evident in this book as she cooks her way out of the year after Gourmet closed.
Quick, happy read, picked up a couple of recipes that I can‘t wait to try! And with #quarantinelife , I‘ll have the time! #litsycooks
Found this at the thrift store today in perfect condition! My husband needs to experiment with some new foods....🤣🍐🍅🍞🧀🥘🥧
Leftover mashed potatoes, shirred egg, butter, cream sprinkle of salt = ☁️
I just finished the tagged book on my Kindle and OHMYWORD IT WAS EVERYTHING. I love good food writing. Part personal story, part cook book (over 130 recipes I think!) it was just what I needed to get back into reading. Lucky for me I have two more of her books in paperback so I'm jumping right in to this one next. Do you love food writing? Any recommends? Are there any food lovers book clubs? Happy Friday everyone :)
#ReadingResolutions #BeautifulWriting ??❤️I love beautiful writing. Make it about food and I love it even more. Ruth Reichl writes so beautifully about food--whether it's in a memoir, a novel, a magazine editorial, a cookbook, or blog posts with simple recipe notes and personal stories in 'Ruth's Words" on her website. She never fails to warm my heart and make me hungry. ?
Found this at Walmart for five dollars. I love her books. Make me want to get in the kitchen and make something wonderful
I love foodie memoirs, especially with recipes, and Ruth Reichl writes some of the best. This one, which has gotten rave reviews, is about how she dealt with the sudden folding of the wonderful Gourmet magazine where she was editor for 10 years. Great deal on Kindle today. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RRT33F6/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr=
Spending the day working at the prettiest local library
Also the tagged book is reminding me how much I how Ruth Reichl's writing 😍
Finally finished! Ugh. Okay so when I began reading this book, I was really impressed with the premise = journal + cookbook, but after awhile I found myself bored with the entire thing and thinking that it would be better if the book was one or the other. There wasn't enough of her story to keep my interest, nor any recipes that I'm likely to try. Overall, I didn't hate the book. It was just okay. I may need to revisit it at a different time. Idk
So excited to for this #TBR book! I had originally downloaded it on Recorded Books Digital to familiarize myself with the new layout and I needed a book starting with the #LetterM for #LitsyAtoZ but the gorgeous photos inside deserved to be viewed in print. Turns out the book is part cook book, part journal documenting her life after her company went under.

Reading for my library's cookbook club July meeting and I'm really enjoying it!
I don't read a lot of nonfiction books but this is part cookbook part memoir and you can see from all the tabs a family favorite #moreorless
Ruth Reichl is amazing with food, words, & words about food-she has me craving most of the recipes I've read so far. I checked this one out from the library but have a feeling I'm going to succumb to buying it at some point. Made her Avgolemono Soup (one of my favorite soups). 🍋Her recipe is pretty basic-just broth, rice, eggs & lemon but silky & delicious. It's on the blog today for #soupersundays. Link to recipe👇🏼#litsycooks #cookbooks 🍴📚❤️
So this stack happened at the library today. I went in to pick up my holds; Mongrels & My Kitchen Year (thanks @Zelma 😆), saw River Cottage Veg (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall may be the chef my blogging group cooks with next), a recipe in Soup! intrigued me, they had The Martian DVD (need to watch again for my movie/food blogging group), & a quick stop at the library bookstore & The Paris Architect & The Haunting of Hill House were mine for $1.📚👍
First book done for the month, but in all fairness I started last month and I hadn't realized I had less than 2 hours of audio left. I really enjoyed this cookbook/memoir. Hearing Ruth Reichl read her recipes it was VERY clear how much she loves to create food & how she genuinely receives pleasure from feeding friends & family. Listening to her, it was easy to feel her sense of loss at the shuttering of Gourmet. Gripe:following recipes was hard⤵️
My new #audiobook just came in and look #pinkcover #RiotGrams #OverDrive #NonfictionChallenge17 #LRCfoodMemoir
This was such a treat. I love Ruth Reichl's memoirs but this was so much more than a memoir or cookbook. Instead, this is an honest, raw, intimate glimpse into a time when she was trying to rediscover her passion and path in life after the demise of Gourmet Magazine. It is filled with gorgeous photography, snippets of memoir, and the recipes that appear in each anecdote. I will go back to this again and again as it is just lovely.
I am a pretty simple reader: no notes or notebooks, no pens, no sticky tabs or post-it notes. I don't keep a written log, just digital. I don't writes goals or lists or quotes. I don't highlight or underline.
I have my current non-fiction read in hardcover, current fiction on my nook (with protective sleeve), something to drink (either coffee or water usually), and my glasses. Furry friend optional. #readingequipment
We have a fire, blankets, the first few MASH episodes, and Ruth Reichl. I'm about to add some hot chocolate too. Very cozy here tonight!
Not only is this book gorgeous and full of mouthwatering recipes, but Reichl writes with a raw and simple honesty that is a joy to read.
I started this last night and am in for such a treat! Short passages of memoir paired with the appropriate recipe for that memory and gorgeous photography. This book covers Reichl's difficult year after the closing for Gourmet magazine, and her focus on food, cooking and community. ❤️
Loving the book, but not so much her New York Corn Muffins. A little dry for me. I'm gonna try them her way: split in half horizontally and grilled with butter. Eta: yes, much better when warm, crispy, and grilled with butter!
So smart: place the chicken's fat beneath the skin so it can baste the breast!
I'm about a quarter of the way through and I'm loving this book. Feeling the author's sadness, though.
So starts Ruth Reichl's cookbook memoir of the year following the abrupt closing of Gourmet magazine, which she had edited for ten years. This is one gorgeous book!
I've loved Ruth Reichl's writing since I read Tender at the Bone. This book describes the year after Gourmet magazine folded. She is able to make you see, smell, and almost taste what she describes. I've made the Chocolate Cake and it was amazing. I'll need to buy my own copy because there are many more recipes I want to try. I'm looking forward to the rice pudding. There are "bonus" recipes hiding in her accounts of dishes she tossed together.
Finishing this up as part of my #biblioweekend. It's chilly this morning in the PNW, so I decided coffee cake muffins were in order. @Liberty
Baking a cake for my friend and co-worker's birthday. I knew I had to make it when I saw that is called The Cake That Cures Everything. Except her cake will have peanut butter/cream cheese frosting.
This apricot pie recipe is from Ruth Reichl, part of her story of the year after Gourmet Magazine was shut down. This was a surprisingly open and honest read about how food and friends can help us survive. #cookingthebooks http://jennybakes.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-pies-of-summer-apricot-pie.html
Started Mother's Day reading in bed, with sun, a cool breeze and a mug of Stumptown coffee. Ruth Reichl is good company.
