My Kitchen Year
My Kitchen Year: 136 Recipes That Saved My Life | Ruth Reichl
32 posts | 35 read | 38 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Los Angeles Times NPR Mens Journal BookPage Booklist Publishers Weekly In the fall of 2009, the food world was rocked when Gourmet magazine was abruptly shuttered by its parent company. No one was more stunned by this unexpected turn of events than its beloved editor in chief, Ruth Reichl, who suddenly faced an uncertain professional future. As she struggled to process what had seemed unthinkable, Reichl turned to the one place that had always provided sanctuary. I did what I always do when Im confused, lonely, or frightened, she writes. I disappeared into the kitchen. My Kitchen Year follows the change of seasonsand Reichls emotionsas she slowly heals through the simple pleasures of cooking. While working 24/7, Reichl would throw quick meals together for her family and friends. Now she has the time to rediscover what cooking meant to her. Imagine kale, leaves dark and inviting, sauted with chiles and garlic; summer peaches baked into a simple cobbler; fresh oysters chilling in a box of snow; plump chickens and earthy mushrooms, fricasseed with cream. Over the course of this challenging year, each dish Reichl prepares becomes a kind of stepping stone to finding joy again in ordinary things. The 136 recipes collected here represent a lifes passion for food: a blistering ma po tofu that shakes Reichl out of the blues; a decadent grilled cheese sandwich that accompanies a rare sighting in the woods around her home; a rhubarb sundae that signals the arrival of spring. Here, too, is Reichls enlivening dialogue with her Twitter followers, who become her culinary supporters and lively confidants. Part cookbook, part memoir, part paean to the household gods, My Kitchen Year may be Ruth Reichls most stirring book yetone that reveals a refreshingly vulnerable side of the world's most famous food editor as she shares treasured recipes to be returned to again and again and again. Praise for My Kitchen Year Ruth is one of our greatest storytellers today, which you will feel from the moment you open this book and begin to read: No one writes as warmly and engagingly about the all-important intersection of food, life, love, and loss. This book is a lyrical and deeply intimate journey told through recipes, as only Ruth can do.Alice Waters What will send this book to the top of bestseller lists is the lovely way Reichl describes how dishes come together, like the Greek chicken soup with lemon and egg known as avgolemono, and her talent for assembling a collection of recipes her legions of former Gourmet fans will want to make themselves. The Washington Post The recipes make for lovely reading, full of Reichls elemental wisdom. . . . In the best way possible, My Kitchen Year is cozy, the reading equivalent of curling up next to a fire with a glass of red wine and perhaps the scent of bread in the oven wafting over.Vogue If anyone can convince us that a dessert, plus two more fabulous dishes, can turn a crummy day around, its culinary writer Ruth Reichl, who knows firsthand just how powerful food can be.O: The Oprah Magazine The voice is pure Reichl in a way that makes the reader yearn for a house in the country with a pantry full of staples. . . . And as she finds solace through cooking, we find comfort too.Eater (Fall 2015s Best Cookbooks) From the Hardcover edition.

Before posting my July list I need to get caught up on June. This is the third book from Ruth Reichl that I have read. This one was my #bookspin pick for June. I loved that this one includes a ton of recipes. I have marked a few to try myself. She loves food and it is evident in this book as she cooks her way out of the year after Gourmet closed.

Zelma I absolutely adore that book, and all things Ruth Reichl. 6y
MEGR @Zelma I love all her books, but this one was special because she signed it for me in my birthday! It just so happened she was in town when the book first came out and a local restaurant did a special menu from the book. She came to each table and signed for us! 6y
Zelma Wow, that is amazing and what a special memory and experience! What was on the menu? 6y

MEGR @Zelma it was wonderful! The first course was creamed lobster claws on brioche, then puntarelle salad with anchovy dressing and burratta, Michael‘s grilled London broil with red onions and tomatoes and for desert....Ruth‘s cake that cures everything! It was a memorable meal! I‘m sure I‘ll never have another like it! But I have the recipes! 6y
Zelma I am so happy to hear the cake was on the menu. I want that cake so much, and still haven‘t had a chance to make it. 😛 6y
MEGR @Zelma I have never made it either! Maybe December will be the month...I‘ll let you know! 6y

I just finished the tagged book on my Kindle and OHMYWORD IT WAS EVERYTHING. I love good food writing. Part personal story, part cook book (over 130 recipes I think!) it was just what I needed to get back into reading. Lucky for me I have two more of her books in paperback so I'm jumping right in to this one next. Do you love food writing? Any recommends? Are there any food lovers book clubs? Happy Friday everyone :)

Reviewsbylola I‘m not big on food writing but my book club just read a pretty good food inspired memoir. Definitely check it out if you haven‘t already. 6y
Christine Love Ruth Reichl and can‘t get enough of food writing! A recent fave is 6y
SleepyDragon This is the only food writing I've read. I found it at Dollar Tree and really enjoyed it. My husband has a Soprano's themed cookbook with passages "written" by the characters. That's kind of fun and the dishes are delicious. 6y

#ReadingResolutions #BeautifulWriting ??❤️I love beautiful writing. Make it about food and I love it even more. Ruth Reichl writes so beautifully about food--whether it's in a memoir, a novel, a magazine editorial, a cookbook, or blog posts with simple recipe notes and personal stories in 'Ruth's Words" on her website. She never fails to warm my heart and make me hungry. ?

Zelma Yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssss! I adore her and My Kitchen Year was everything. I am thinking about re-reading it soon. 7y
Dolly I loved Tender At the Bone and (edited) 7y
Booksnchill I was so sorry when I finished all of Reichl‘s books- great on audio! 7y
Christine Thank you for the reminder that I still have several Ruth Reichl books on my TBR! I‘ve loved every one I‘ve read so far. 7y

I love foodie memoirs, especially with recipes, and Ruth Reichl writes some of the best. This one, which has gotten rave reviews, is about how she dealt with the sudden folding of the wonderful Gourmet magazine where she was editor for 10 years. Great deal on Kindle today. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RRT33F6/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Finally finished! Ugh. Okay so when I began reading this book, I was really impressed with the premise = journal + cookbook, but after awhile I found myself bored with the entire thing and thinking that it would be better if the book was one or the other. There wasn't enough of her story to keep my interest, nor any recipes that I'm likely to try. Overall, I didn't hate the book. It was just okay. I may need to revisit it at a different time. Idk

So excited to for this #TBR book! I had originally downloaded it on Recorded Books Digital to familiarize myself with the new layout and I needed a book starting with the #LetterM for #LitsyAtoZ but the gorgeous photos inside deserved to be viewed in print. Turns out the book is part cook book, part journal documenting her life after her company went under.

Ruth Reichl is amazing with food, words, & words about food-she has me craving most of the recipes I've read so far. I checked this one out from the library but have a feeling I'm going to succumb to buying it at some point. Made her Avgolemono Soup (one of my favorite soups). 🍋Her recipe is pretty basic-just broth, rice, eggs & lemon but silky & delicious. It's on the blog today for #soupersundays. So this stack happened at the library today. I went in to pick up my holds; Mongrels & My Kitchen Year (thanks @Zelma 😆), saw River Cottage Veg (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall may be the chef my blogging group cooks with next), a recipe in Soup! intrigued me, they had The Martian DVD (need to watch again for my movie/food blogging group), & a quick stop at the library bookstore & The Paris Architect & The Haunting of Hill House were mine for $1.📚👍

First book done for the month, but in all fairness I started last month and I hadn't realized I had less than 2 hours of audio left. I really enjoyed this cookbook/memoir. Hearing Ruth Reichl read her recipes it was VERY clear how much she loves to create food & how she genuinely receives pleasure from feeding friends & family. Listening to her, it was easy to feel her sense of loss at the shuttering of Gourmet. Gripe:following recipes was hard⤵️

Cinfhen Luckily thanks to Google I was able to find almost all of the recipes that she discussed. Above are some examples. I won't be trying most because W30 is a BITCH😬 8y
LauraBeth I love her - she did one of my favorite episodes of Fresh Air on NPR - hope that W30 is almost over 😀 8y
ReadingEnvy She was more honest in this than I expected. 8y

Cinfhen I really enjoyed listening to Ruth Reichl, there is something very soothing about her tone and I did appreciate her honesty...she's definitely no fan of Condé Nast @ReadingEnvy I'm just about hitting the 3 week mark @LauraBeth , how did you decide which foods to reintroduce into your diet? I don't have a plan for day 31??? 8y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen I worked for years in magazine publishing in NYC and they are referred to in the industry as Conde Nasty for a reason 😂 I'd say that your plan for day 31 should be to slowly start re-introducing things back into your diet. Keep a food journal and see what aggravates you. You can always do the Whole30 again 😀 8y
Cinfhen Thanks @LauraBeth sooo many options to reintroduce 💖😀💖 8y

This was such a treat. I love Ruth Reichl's memoirs but this was so much more than a memoir or cookbook. Instead, this is an honest, raw, intimate glimpse into a time when she was trying to rediscover her passion and path in life after the demise of Gourmet Magazine. It is filled with gorgeous photography, snippets of memoir, and the recipes that appear in each anecdote. I will go back to this again and again as it is just lovely.

Zelma Oh and @DebinHawaii, I think you need this book. 😆 I'd send you my copy if I could part with it. 8y
Lynnsoprano This is already on my TBR, and after reading your post I think it moves up the list. 8y

Zelma @Lynnsoprano yay! 👍 8y
Zelma @DebinHawaii if it helps with your guilt, I don't really see it as a cookbook per se (even though Reichl does). It's like a mixed piece of art and is on my regular bookshelves as opposed to my cookbook shelf. 😉😆 8y
DebinHawaii @Zelma Hah! Good points! I will keep them in mind! 😆 8y
BookishMarginalia Isn't it the most gorgeous book? 💜 8y

I am a pretty simple reader: no notes or notebooks, no pens, no sticky tabs or post-it notes. I don't keep a written log, just digital. I don't writes goals or lists or quotes. I don't highlight or underline.

I have my current non-fiction read in hardcover, current fiction on my nook (with protective sleeve), something to drink (either coffee or water usually), and my glasses. Furry friend optional. #readingequipment

[DELETED] 3517561138 I'm the same! Just a book or the kindle for me. And oftentimes a mug of tea. 8y
AprilMae Depends on what I am reading and why. Book club reading I'll write notes occasionally. If just for fun I don't unless I want to look something up or love a quote. PostIts=bookmarks half the time. Furry friend does not allow himself to be optional 😻 8y

Zelma @ReadingEnvy I'm looking forward to trying the the recipes. However, I'm reading it very slowly to savor it. 8y
Zelma @BethFishReads it's quite different in that it feels more like a cookbook, but there's too much personal writing and photography to just be a cookbook. It's a really cool book and I am so glad I own it rather than borrowed it from the library. 8y

Loving the book, but not so much her New York Corn Muffins. A little dry for me. I'm gonna try them her way: split in half horizontally and grilled with butter. Eta: yes, much better when warm, crispy, and grilled with butter!

Zelma The important question to me is are they sweet or savory? 8y
ElizabethAndino Loved this one! 8y
AileenRR @Zelma More on the savory side; initially they weren't sweet enough for me, but I tend to like sweet, cakey corn bread 8y

I've loved Ruth Reichl's writing since I read Tender at the Bone. This book describes the year after Gourmet magazine folded. She is able to make you see, smell, and almost taste what she describes. I've made the Chocolate Cake and it was amazing. I'll need to buy my own copy because there are many more recipes I want to try. I'm looking forward to the rice pudding. There are "bonus" recipes hiding in her accounts of dishes she tossed together.

This apricot pie recipe is from Ruth Reichl, part of her story of the year after Gourmet Magazine was shut down. This was a surprisingly open and honest read about how food and friends can help us survive. #cookingthebooks http://jennybakes.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-pies-of-summer-apricot-pie.html

Dolly I love most of her other books. Comfort Me with Apples, Tender At the Bone are laugh out loud funny and memorable. We've all had those embarrassing food disasters not always but sometimes committed by relatives. 8y
