Comfort Me with Apples
Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table | Ruth Reichl
BONUS: This edition contains a Comfort Me with Apples discussion guide and an excerpt from Ruth Reichl's Delicious! In this delightful sequel to her bestseller Tender at the Bone, Ruth Reichl returns with more tales of love, life, and marvelous meals. Comfort Me with Apples picks up Reichls story in 1978, when she puts down her chefs toque and embarks on a career as a restaurant critic. Her pursuit of good food and good company leads her to New York and China, France and Los Angeles, and her stories of cooking and dining with world-famous chefs range from the madcap to the sublime. Through it all, Reichl makes each and every course a hilarious and instructive occasion for novices and experts alike. She shares some of her favorite recipes while also sharing the intimacies of her personal life in a style so honest and warm that readers will feel they are enjoying a conversation over a meal with a friend.

An idealistic Ruth Reichl becomes a food critic. The growth of her writing career parallels the emergence of modern American cuisine in CA. (I recognized many of the young chefs she writes about as Top Chef judges.) At the same time as she talks food, Reichl weaves in her personal life: her father's death, extramarital affairs, the demise of her 1st marriage, moves, a failed adoption.
Overall an easy and engaging listen.

A continuation of Ruth Reichl's first memoir Tender at the Bone. Takes you through her life as she establishes herself as a food critic, her first divorce, her second husband and her want to become a mother.
Decent read.

Book number three for 2024. I ❤️ my local library. Even in our small town, I can usually get whatever book someone mentions or recommends. If my local branch doesn‘t have it, interlibrary loan usually finds it.

#GratefulHarvest #Apples Reichls second book explains how she went from living in a Berkeley commune to becoming a restaurant critic. Her love of good food guided her life in many interesting directions.

Eggs Sounds amazing 3y
Leftcoastzen @Eggs I have read most but not all of the books , I think I still like her first one the best maybe youth , nostalgia, family connections to food 3y

March roundup. This was a crazy month. We had family living with us on lockdown. I'm homeschooling and trying to house train our puppy. With all that, I still got a lot of reading in. This month is a great example on why I have shelves of unread books. I read everything, but it has to be the right time. I put down several good books this month. They just weren't good for me in the moment. When things get tough, I go romance!

Beachesnbooks I feel the same way about romance as my go-to genre when I'm stressed! 5y
AutumnRLS @Beachesnbooks ❤ I have a feeling that April will be full of romance too! 5y

5/5 Stars. A wholly interesting and fast paced memoir. Some people have lived and know how to write to make it all very interesting. Some adult themes. This memoir deals with Ruth's life from her early 20s to early 40s. I started it and couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting (sorry for ignoring you yesterday my toddler 😂) some recipes I would love to try. Again, recommend this one for anyone who loves memoirs and/or food writing.

I was in an antiquarian bookstore lusting after first editions and leather bound books I could not afford. I saw a small section called “little books “near the checkout counter .the Briggle Orchard Book published in 1908 , really charmed me.Designed to help you plant and maintain a fruit orchard. Its small trim size was to keep the cost down and make it so the farmer could carry in their pocket as the orchard was being cared for. #apples #riotgrams

#Characters2017 #kindredspirit How did I get two posts behind forbthis challenge?! 😬 She's a real person and not a character but when I read her writing and I'm struck by the love and passion that she describes the simplest food or even a small blue bowl sitting on a table with, I think that Ruth Reichl is a kindred spirit. We share a love for food, cooking and eating--along with words, reading, writing and history. 🍴📚💜

kyraleseberg I need to grab Comfort Me with Apples while it's still on sale in the Kindle store! 7y
Lola I was listening to an interview with her on the Food 52 podcast when she was promoting her newest book and she talked about the satisfaction she gets from washing the dishes-I try to remember that every time my husband cooks and I get to do the dishes 😛 7y

Not as enjoyable as Garlic and Sapphires, but a good read nonetheless. Reichl does an amazing job of describing meals, but the bulk of this book is more about her personal relationships--which makes sense, given that this is a memoir, but didn't quite grab me.
