The Weight of Our Sky
The Weight of Our Sky | Hanna Alkaf
A music loving teen with OCD does everything she can to find her way back to her mother during the historic race riots in 1969 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in this heart-pounding literary debut. Melati Ahmad looks like your typical movie-going, Beatles-obsessed sixteen-year-old. Unlike most other sixteen-year-olds though, Mel also believes that she harbors a djinn inside her, one who threatens her with horrific images of her mothers death unless she adheres to an elaborate ritual of counting and tapping to keep him satisfied. A trip to the movies after school turns into a nightmare when the city erupts into violent race riots between the Chinese and the Malay. When gangsters come into the theater and hold movie-goers hostage, Mel, a Malay, is saved by a Chinese woman, but has to leave her best friend behind to die. On their journey through town, Mel sees for herself the devastation caused by the riots. In her village, a neighbor tells her that her mother, a nurse, was called in to help with the many bodies piling up at the hospital. Mel must survive on her own, with the help of a few kind strangers, until she finds her mother. But the djinn in her mind threatens her ability to cope.

Based on 1 of the darkest Malaysian history, it‘s about Melati, a 16 years old with OCD mental illness. Her turbulent ride during the emergency from losing her best friend to finding her mom, it was a harrowing ride indeed. I‘ve enjoyed the book overall despite being reminded of those horror incident way back then. This is my pick for February #bookspin #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

The racial riots of May 13, 1969 were such a dark blot in Malaysia's history that we still can't talk about it without official sanctions, & the death toll (of the minority Chinese population, especially) is contested. I'm glad that this YA novel set during that time exists, & that the protagonist is an unconventional young girl afflicted with OCD. My main complaint about this is that it suffers from a similar problem that books about Malaysia ⬇️

batsy tend to all suffer from: a writing style that is in the spirit of a tourism advertisement. There is always the sense of having to sell Malaysia as a "multicultural" haven despite the problems, although we know that the roots of the riots go back to systemic inequality (& indeed, archival documents that show it might have been state sanctioned). All this can't be covered in a YA novel, & I still recommend this despite its occasional mawkish tone. 4y
batsy And very important to point out that this does not merely belong in the history books: the race riots are not an *event* but a process; the causes leading up to it are still very much alive today. 4y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 I think in some parts of the world (the west) racism is seen as white v everyone not white. Expanding my horizons via Litsy has opened my eyes to these discussions in different parts of the world and that it‘s never that simplistic. (edited) 4y

erzascarletbookgasm Well said! 👍 4y
Cathythoughts Yes ! Very well said ... a “ process & still very much alive today “ the world over .. 4y
batsy @TrishB Thank you! I completely agree; talking about books (and other stuff) on Litsy has totally opened me up to things I might not have considered before ❤️ 4y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts Thank you both. It's sad and enraging that it still persists... But I guess it's consolation that there are always people who constantly stand up to it ❤️ 4y
arubabookwoman My parents moved to Singapore in early 1969. I was in college in the US, but came to Singapore and spent the summer of 1969 there. I remember hearing about the riots in Malaysia, but somehow don‘t remember them as being so recent in time. I traveled around Malaysia a bit in 1970, and remember tensions and feelings as being quite raw still. 4y
batsy @arubabookwoman Thanks for sharing! My mother and relatives who were around at the time still don't feel comfortable even talking about that period, but the fear comes back every so often for them whenever a political upheaval or protest takes places, so the fear seems deeply imbedded. 4y
kspenmoll Thank you for this conversation @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @TrishB @batsy - a world wide process definitely although the US roots are so embedded due to slavery-,I too have learned so much from Littens the world over. Love this group & love all the learning we share. 4y
Graywacke State sanctioned! wow. Thanks for this commentary. Brings up so many things... 4y
batsy @kspenmoll I love how much I've learned from others here, too ❤️ 4y
batsy @Graywacke It's not properly catalogued here but this is the book I learned quite a bit from 4y
Graywacke Found it here. Will I need context to appreciate it (if I can find a copy)? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2086581.May_13 4y
batsy @Graywacke It's based on archival research, but not much context needed. I'm pretty sure copies are still available here. I'll send it to you :) 4y
Graywacke @batsy amazon wants $120 !! I would gladly accept a copy. I‘ll contact you on gr. 4y
Hamlet Noting that the riots weren‘t “an event but a process” is such an important insight. And thanks for the recommendation in the comments for the book May 13. 4y
batsy @Hamlet Thank you! Even Malaysians need to find ways to educate ourselves about our own history as certain narratives are suppressed or modified :/ 4y
Suet624 I had no idea about the riots and, honestly, I know little about Malaysia. Thank you for sharing this information. 4y

A character referred to violence as "hanky-panky." That's, uh, that's not what that word means. ??

#MagnificentMarch Day 5: The story is set in 1969, when racial tension between the Chinese & Malays has reached fever pitch in Malaysia, resulting to genocide & brutal slayings perpetrated by one ethnic group against another. Amidst this historical backdrop, the reader is introduced to a young & guileless teenage voice, Melati Ahmad, who is suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. #AboutMentalIllness. It Would Be Night in Caracas by Karina Sainz Borgo - a work of translated fiction by a Venezuelan-born writer.
The ebook is You Beneath Your Skin by @damyantig and is set in New Delhi and promises a tale of murder and corruption. Its main character is a single mother with an autistic teenage son.
My friend sent me this copy of The Weight of Our Sky who was at the Asian Festival of Children‘s Content in Singapore.

GatheringBooks yes, we invited hanna alkaf for afcc and was so thrilled that she was able to make it. But I am sad to miss the event after helping organise it since 2011. 😭 5y

This is not a lighthearted book (shout out to the author for including trigger warnings) but so incredibly impactful & moving. Melati is a teen struggling w severe OCD in 1969 Kuala Lumpur when the race riots that ended in the murder of between 160-600 people began. Determined to reunite with her mother, she sees the best & worst of humanity over the span of a week as a Chinese family takes her in and she learns to trust herself and her instincts.

rachelsbrittain Did I start this book last night & then stay up way too late before a travel day to finish it? Yes I did. Was it worth it? So very much. 5y

#BFC week one update! I read a bunch of books at ALAAC19 (six in total, including the tagged book), walked a ton, did a bunch of yoga, and ran when I got home. Next week, I‘ll have a normal schedule, so I should get in plenty of runs and yoga practices! It‘ll also be the start of summer vacation slash freelance copy editing. All in all, a good first week of #BookFitnessChallenge!

A well researched and unique story of the post election race riots of 1969 as seen through the eyes of a teenage Muslim girl. It follows Melati, who shows strength to overcome her mental illness during the harrowing week when she got separated from her mother as the street riots and curfew took over. There‘s a lot of humanity among the destruction and violence.👇 (cont.)

(Trigger: graphic violence, racial slurs.)

erzascarletbookgasm .. Fast paced narrative with vivid descriptions, this is an important story that needs to be told, an incident which was barely recounted in the history textbooks. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm .. I liked the great content and plot development; my only hesitation was the more than necessary frequency voice of the djinn appearing in Melati‘s head throughout the book as she struggles to work through her anxiety and OCD (although I understand it‘s necessary to show the stress she‘s going through.) 6y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 6y

Set during a pretty horrific week of Malaysian history. The main character has OCD, which reads annoying/frustrating at times, but I figure that's the point. Also, very much trigger warning for violence, both invasive thoughts of the main character and actual actions of several characters.

Traveled all the way to Malaysia for lunch, dessert, and a 2-hour aromatherapy massage (Johor Bahru, specifically). One of the many perks of living in Singapore, making day trips like this super convenient, fast, reliable. Naturally, I had to buy a local title that has gone international: setting is in Kuala Lumpur in 1969! Plus, it‘s one of our picks for my #IRL Book Club. Looking forward to reading this one. #WomenReadWomen2019

Probably a new favorite of mine. Extremely import read between history most of us don‘t know and the way mental illness is handled so well it‘s just an amazing read. Gory and violent but still really amazing.

Okay I know I've done a lot of book roundups for the beginning of the year, but there are just so many great new books coming out this year that I can't help getting hyped for. So anyway, here are 50 more of the YA variety:
