The House of Dreams
The House of Dreams: A Novel | Kate Lord Brown
12 posts | 2 read | 13 to read
An international bestseller, Kate Lord Brown's debut novel The Perfume Garden has sold especially well in Canada, where it was selected as Read of the Month for June 2015 and made it to the Globe & Mail bestseller list. The House of Dreams combines Brown's lovely, lyrical writing and signature interwoven past/present narrative style with an even more commercial time period and a fascinating real-life story. In 2000, Gabriel Lambert is a celebrated painter who hides a dark secret. Sophie Cass, a journalist struggling to begin her career and with a family connection to Lambert, is determined to find the truth about his past and the little known story of the real Casablanca. In 1940, an international group of rescue workers, refugee intellectuals, and artists gather in the beautiful old Villa Air Bel just outside Marseilles. American journalist Varian Fry and his remarkable team at the American Relief Center are working to help them escape France, but "the greatest man-trap in history" is closing in on them. Despite their peril, true camaraderie and creativity flourishes - while love affairs spring up and secrets are hidden. At the House of Dreams, young refugee artist Gabriel Lambert changed the course of his life - and now, sixty years later at his home in the Hamptons, the truth is finally catching up with him.

Alright, #GroupL, these are the choices I pulled from my shelves. I‘ll tag the rest of the books in the comments. Let me know what you think. #lmpbc

TheAromaofBooks These all sound fun!! I've read The Last Unicorn, but am not opposed to a reread as it has been a LONG time! 5y
Chili I haven‘t read any of them. They all sound good. 5y
ameliashley @hes7 I‘m not in your group but The Last Unicorn was my favorite movie when I was too young to even understand it! 😆 I didn‘t even know it was a book!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Also just realized that you said you had it narrowed down to five and there are definitely six 😂 But six look nicer in a collage, so I'm down for it! 5y
Jerdencon I haven‘t read any of them- they all look good! 5y
hes7 @TheAromaofBooks 😂😂😂 I totally did have five. Then, I was pulling them off my shelves and was like, “Ooh, this one looks good, too.” 🤦🏼‍♀️😂😂 5y
TheAromaofBooks I sadly had trouble narrowing it down to six! 5y
hes7 @TheAromaofBooks It‘s so hard to pick! I think I‘m going to have to use a random number generator or something to make my final choice. 😂 5y

True to my word, I finished this book. I struggle to rate it and have opted for So-So. This book would have been more interesting had it focused entirely on 1940s France. Having the more modern time period took up space that needed to be filled in elsewhere. That being said, I'm also glad I read it.

Since I got home at 4, I've unloaded the car, done four loads of laundry, made my bed, and read seven pages more than I did the entire week I was on "vacation" with four kids. The nights not over yet. Maybe I can double that page count. ?

Julsmarshall After awhile I learned not to call them "vacations" when I was with my kids. They were "trips". That way, I wasn't so bummed when I came home more exhausted than when I left ??? 8y
LitHousewife @Julsmarshall That is a great tip! The most relaxing part of this "trip" has been the unpacking. ? 8y
Bkwurm I've learned that I have to go on a trip by myself for it to be a "vacation." ? Welcome home and happy reading! 8y
Beckys_Books I'm leaving in the morning for a conference and am hoping to skip most of the networking events and catch up on some reading in the evenings. Might be better than a vacation! 8y

My hermit crab is in Virginia, but two of these four monkeys aren't mine. Does that count for #funphotoFriday?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahaha! Monkeys definitely count for me! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So glad your vacation looks like it's back on track. 8y

LitHousewife @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I still haven't reached page 50. I keep trying, though. My husband has promised to take our kids once we get home on Sunday. I going to need it. 😆 8y

They say that God won't give you any more than you can handle. I've found that to be true. The strangers who gave Ethan an emergency inhaler before I got him to the hospital are now fast friends for me and the kids. I went from frazzled stressed out to having the best day in a very long time.

NatalieR Glad to hear everything worked out well for everyone! 👏 8y

I spoke too soon this morning. Those few precious pages at read at breakfast were my only pages. At the ER because my friend's son developed croup/allergies. What a vacation!

CherylDeFranceschi Oh noes! So sorry. 8y
LitHousewife @CherylDeFranceschi Thank you! It's to the point now where I just have to laugh. He's fine now and will be as hyper as the girls. 😊 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @LitHousewife If I remember correctly from when my daughter was little, he'll be even more so because of the steroids! Glad he feels better. Hope the vacation is all uphill from here on!!! 8y

It may not be much, but it's stopped raining and the kids are off exploring. A quiet breakfast with a book and a Diet Coke should never, ever be underestimated.

Megabooks Sorry it didn't last! ☹️ 8y

The kids are all ready for a horse lesson, so I'm going to head back home for a solid hour of reading. Believe me, I've earned it!

Like a good reader, I brought more than one book to the beach. Onward and upward.

I'm excited about this one. It's about the "artist's Schindler." I think it will make a great companion to The Muralist, which I enjoyed last winter.

candc320 It has a GORGEOUS cover! 9y
LitHousewife @candc320 I absolutely love it. The reflection on the bottom of the dress makes me happy. 9y
