Rebels of Ireland: The Dublin Saga
Rebels of Ireland: The Dublin Saga | Edward Rutherfurd
14 posts | 12 read | 26 to read
"The reigning master of grand historical fiction returns with the stirring conclusion to his bestselling Dublin Saga." "The Princes of Ireland," the first volume of Edward Rutherfurd's magisterial epic of Irish history, ended with the disastrous Irish revolt of 1534 and the disappearance of the sacred Staff of Saint Patrick. "The Rebels of Ireland" opens with an Ireland transformed; plantation, the final step in the centuries-long English conquest of Ireland, is the order of the day, and the subjugation of the native Irish Catholic population has begun in earnest. Edward Rutherfurd brings history to life through the tales of families whose fates rise and fall in each generation: Brothers who must choose between fidelity to their ancient faith or the security of their families; a wife whose passion for a charismatic Irish chieftain threatens her comfortable marriage to a prosperous merchant; a young scholar whose secret rebel sympathies are put to the test; men who risk their lives and their children's fortunes in the tragic pursuit of freedom, and those determined to root them out forever. Rutherfurd spins the saga of Ireland's 400-year path to independence in all its drama, tragedy, and glory through the stories of people from all strata of society--Protestant and Catholic, rich and poor, conniving and heroic. His richly detailed narrative brings to life watershed moments and events, from the time of plantation settlements to the "Flight of the Earls," when the native aristocracy fled the island, to Cromwell's suppression of the population and the imposition of the harsh anti-Catholic penal laws. He describes the hardships of ordinary people and the romantic, doomed attempt to overthrow the Protestant oppressors, which ended in defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, and the departure of the "Wild Geese." In vivid tones Rutherfurd re-creates Grattan's Parliament, Wolfe Tone's attempted French invasion of 1798, the tragic rising of Robert Emmet, the Catholic campaign of Daniel O'Connell, the catastrophic famine, the mass migration to America, and the glorious Irish Renaissance of Yeats and Joyce. And through the eyes of his characters, he captures the rise of Charles Stewart Parnell and the great Irish nationalists and the birth of an Ireland free of all ties to England. A tale of fierce battles, hot-blooded romances, and family and political intrigues, "The Rebels of Ireland" brings the story begun in "The Princes of Ireland" to a stunning conclusion.

Pickpick

Yes, finally finished this monster at 944 Pages. Read a quarter of it last year before recalled to the library and started all over again this year. Another enjoyable read, and really enjoyed the section on The Irish Potato Famine and the second half of the book. A bit too political and religiony (new word 😂) in places. Felt a bit abrupt ending to the book, just after the Irish Rising and really wanted to know what happened since then!

TheBookgeekFrau I like your new word 'religiony' 🤩 6y
Andrew65 @C.Perone 😂 I‘m good at making up new words, sometimes when I don‘t mean to. 🙄 6y
Melissa_J I love making up words 😊 Glad you enjoyed it. I‘ll get to this one of these days. 6y

TheBookgeekFrau Happy accident words are usually the best ones; I'll be sure to give you credit when I use it 😁 6y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J It‘s taken me a long time since that Shelfari Group Read! I need to get to some more of his books, and get back to some Michener books. 6y
Andrew65 @C.Perone 😂 Before long everyone will be using it! 6y
Crazeedi Love your new word , I'm definitely putting this on my tbr, after I read 6y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Thanks 😂, there is also Dublin (also published as The Princes of Ireland) which tells the story of Dublin up till Timor tines. If anything I enjoyed that more. 6y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Hope you‘ve had a better weekend. 😊 (edited) 6y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I may have read book you mentioned, not sure, will check and read first. And thank you for your concern. My daughter is very sick, and I'm preparing to get hip replaced next Monday so I'm trying to just manage and stay as calm as I can. It messes with my concentration reading. I'm sure things will be well 6y
Crazeedi BTW a word I mad up- incredilized!😊 6y
Crazeedi Are these books also called the princes of Ireland and the rebels of Ireland 6y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Yes they are the same books, I do wish they wouldn‘t give books different titles! 6y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Stay strong. 👍 Sending positive thoughts, you will soon be the other side of this. 😊 Hope your daughter is better soon. (edited) 6y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 ok just checking on titles, and thank you for your kind words and thoughts 6y
Freespirit I love Edward Rutherford‘s books😊Will look out for this one 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice! 6y
Andrew65 @Freespirit @EadieB Take me a long time to get to this book and finish it, now need to get to Rutherfurd‘s other books - some of which I own. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Did you like his writing? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes they are well written and enjoyable books. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I have a couple of his books! I‘ll have to check him out! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB They are big books, allow yourself plenty of time! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think I have New York, London and Prince of Ireland. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I have NewYork too, The Forest, Paris and Sarum. I‘ve read both the Ireland books now. I also have access to London through a library ebook. (edited) 6y
JaclynW I've wanted to read this author. I have the New York and London books but the size is intimidating! Ha! So I procrastinate! I had no idea that there was a Dublin/Ireland book! You know how I feel about that place, I'm slightly in love/obsessed. 😉😄😊 Since my time living in Dublin (almost 20 years ago now), I'm always trying to find a way to go back. 🍀🍀🍀 6y
Andrew65 @JaclynW There are the two books. One covering up to the Tudor period and this one from that period. I know what you mean about the size of his books being intimidating! I intend touring Ireland when I retire. 😊 6y
JaclynW @Andrew65 I'm for sure putting the two books on my list. I may have to wait until my kids are out of the house to read them. I'm going to need a lot of uninterrupted time. Ha! I hope you do make it to Ireland. I love the place and the people - both as lovely as can be. ❤ 6y

Starting my first #Chunkster of the year. This one has 944 pages. I did start it last year but lost motivation a quarter of the way through hopefully I‘ll have the #motivation to finish it this year. #ANewChapter

Melissa_J Good luck! 6y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J Thanks, was enjoying it last year just wasn‘t in the right frame of mind, (edited) 6y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Wow!! You can do it!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 6y
vkois88 You got this. And kudos to you. My jaw dropped when I read how many pages 😂😂 6y
Andrew65 @vkois88 And there is an awful lot of text on each page! According to the app I use this will take me about 19 hours of reading time! Thanks 😊 6y
Andrew65 @brilliantglow He does write very good books and due to the saga nature‘s they end up being very long. 6y
brilliantglow Yes they do. I tend to read some short stories or an essay collection at the same time as a big book like this. I find it kind of helps to break it up so I don't feel like I'm reading forever without making much progress. 6y
Andrew65 @brilliantglow I tend to intersperse them too for the same reason. 6y
vkois88 😮😮😮 that's a lot lol 6y
Andrew65 @vkois88 I must stop choosing these Chunksters, got two on the go at the same time at the moment. 6y

Not time to finish another book in 2017 so launching my year of big books in 2018 by starting to read Ireland : Awakening, all 944 Pages Of it! This is the second half of his Irish / Dublin Saga, having read the first half many years ago on Shelfari as part of a Group Read along with @Melissa_J and other friends from the Shelfari days. Much missed! However does now feel like a life time ago!

Melissa_J I know! It feels like forever ago when we were all happily going along on Shelfari. I miss it. Goodreads just isn‘t the same 😢 I‘m so glad you are on here though! 7y
Andrew65 @Melissa_J For sone reason I just can‘t get away with Goodreads, admittedly some of it may be the principle as Amazon used Goodreads to eat up Shelfari. Do miss Shelfari days. 😢 Use Librarything for groups but only limited contributions and people. Love Litsy, but do miss grouping and nesting aspect. Also glad you are on here 😊, reason I joined in first place as love seeing what you are reading and your comments on books. 7y

I would like to read about the history of The Troubles and the IRA, separate books are fine. I want it to be engaging and not dry because I'd really like to fill my knowledge gap.

BethM @LibrarianRyan @MrBook any other librarians- do you have any suggestions? 7y
LibrarianRyan This is the only book we have in our collection, but to be in our collection to begin with it would have to be pretty authoritative. It's from 1970. 7y
