Snuggling up with this gem of a book. I'm only just beginning, but I am enjoying it so much already. I miss his class, eloquence, and grace.

It's so hard to believe we went from this amazing man as President to what we have now. This book was so good and uplifting!

Amiable I agree. It's sad and infuriating and scary all at the same time. 6y

What a pleasure and comfort to read the words of a compassionate, intelligent, classy president. I did not know that Obama read selected letters daily and wrote handwritten responses to many. I love his crinkly weird handwriting, too. If my husband were reading this post, he‘d tell me to get a room. 😂

TrishB It would be a packed room 😁 6y

SleepyDragon I need this book in my life. Better make that room a suite. 6y
LoverofLit Same here. I was playing a game with family, I can't remember the name of it now, but the question was name a person the drawer of the card (me) loves more than anyone else and my husband shouted "Obama!" ???? 6y

This is a wonderful book and exactly what I needed right now. I‘ve always adored Obama, perhaps because as a 22 year old British person I haven‘t had a prime minister I liked and believed in in my lifetime, and for 8 years I was affected by Obama existing even if it wasn‘t in my country. I know he isn‘t perfect but I‘ve always found him so comforting and inspiring, and this book made me feel comforted and inspired when I needed it.

MayJasper As a fellow Briton I know what you mean. I was sad he was thwarted at every turn. I would have loved to see what he could have achieved with the backing of political majorities in the legislature. 6y
TrishB As a 50 year old Brit I don‘t think I have either.....the good ones don‘t generally get to be party leaders as that is about a career, not about caring. 6y

A snapshot into the hearts of America. Oh my goodness. I cried so much. Filled with real letters from real Americans with real joys, worries, sorrows, and more. It‘s hard not to be affected by it. || Read more at: http://onthebl.org/2018/10/12/to-obama/

Every day during his presidency, Barack Obama read ten letters that were addressed to him from average American citizens, and then responded with a personal note. This extraordinary book captures both those letters and the president's responses, and also describes the process of how the letters were chosen by White House staff. Fans of this book will also enjoy Ten Letters by Eli Saslow, but I liked this one a lot more.

Blaire I knew he did this, but had not heard about this book. 6y

I loved this book. Obama ended his days while president by reading ten letters sent to him by ordinary Americans. This book is about some of those letters and his responses and about the staffers who worked in the mailroom and selected the letters he read every night. I got teary a lot. The letters were often touching but I also kept reflecting on the kind of response the writers would receive from the current administration if read today.

8little_paws Can't wait to read this one!! 6y
Jas16 @8little_paws It was so good. And just what I needed in the face of recent news. 6y

I really want to read this book!

"Every day, President Obama received ten thousand letters from constituents. Every night, he read ten of them before going to bed. This is the story of the profound ways in which they shaped his presidency."

Samplergal Adding this one. 6y
Tamra This would be fun via a daily serial reader type format. 6y
Tamra What do you suppose the current admin does with letters? 🤔 6y
keithmalek Another book that is similar to this that I really enjoyed is called "Ten Letters" by Eli Saslow. 6y
hwestfall @keithmalek Thanks for the suggestion! 6y
