This Will Only Hurt a Little
This Will Only Hurt a Little | Busy Philipps
79 posts | 93 read | 72 to read
A memoir by the beloved comedic actress known for her roles on Freaks and Geeks, Dawsons Creek, and Cougar Town who has become the breakout star on Instagram stories...imagine I Love Lucy mixed with a modern lifestyle guru (The New Yorker). Busy Philippss autobiographical book offers the same unfiltered and candid storytelling that her Instagram followers have come to know and love, from growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona and her painful and painfully funny teen years, to her life as a working actress, mother, and famous best friend. Busy is the rare entertainer whose impressive arsenal of talents as an actress is equally matched by her storytelling ability, sense of humor, and sharp observations about life, love, and motherhood. Her conversational writing reminds us what we love about her on screens large and small. From film to television to Instagram, Busy delightfully showcases her wry humor and her willingness to bare it all. Ive been waiting my whole life to write this book. Im just so grateful someone asked. Otherwise, what was the point of any of it??

Full disclosure: I was a huge Dawson‘s Creek fan but I‘ve pretty much never seen anything else Busy Philipps has starred in. We‘ve lived very different lives, but were both born in 1979 and the chapter titles here show we both have great taste in music.

I‘m so glad this was on @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks #ALSpine list, as I‘d been meaning to pick it up for awhile and needed a nudge. Busy writes like she‘s chatting with the reader 👇🏻

dariazeoli …and doesn‘t overlook the poor choices and mistakes she‘s made along the way. Her enduring friendship with Michelle Williams after all these years makes me happy. 2y

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks I am also a huge Dawson‘s Creek fan! Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the premiere! I‘m so glad you liked this memoir. I loved it. 😀 2y

2023 is only hours old, but week one is in progress! I‘ve begun my #LesMisCAD journey, started two of @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks picks for #ALSpine, and even got the first freebie of my birthday month (thanks, Simon & Schuster!).

What is everyone selecting for Amazon First Reads? We get two this month… 🤔

I relate to Busy in a lot of ways. I‘ve always been a bit “too much,” and not super comfortable in my own skin for a long time. I cry a lot, put up with a lot of harm in order to feel “loved,” struggled with postpartum anxiety, etc. I found her memoir to be vulnerable, hilarious, and honest. I could hear her voice in my head which enriched the experience. Busy, can we be best friends? Two thumbs up from this shameless Dawson‘s Creek fan. 5⭐️

Book 137

I listened to this book read by the author for three reasons: it was well-reviewed by a friend who's opinion I trust, I loved Freaks and Geeks, and it was available. The book was great, very entertaining. I was shocked that Busy isn't a pseudonym, but her real, entire-life nickname for Elizabeth. I loved her candor and learning a lot about other Hollywood actors.

January Wrap Up 📚 The first book I read this year was The Starless Sea, which I adored, but that and Dark Age were extremely long, dense books, so I needed to sprinkle in a bunch of easy audiobooks in between. I believe Anteater of Death is my 1st cozy mystery? (It was pretty ridiculous and my book club decided we‘re going to continue reading the series 😂) So, I ended up reading 1 hard copy, 1 ebook, and 4 audiobooks.

Finished this while cooking & eating dinner. Busy is the narrator, which adds emotion to several stories she tells about her teen years & recent life. There were some heartfelt stories. Of course, she talks a lot about famous people and her career, & she doesn‘t hold back about famous people she doesn‘t like, leading to some funny moments. #TIL she dated Colin Hanks. Also, that she sobs a lot.

Just finished this #audiobook, narrated by the author, which I think is probably the best way to do a Busy Philipps memoire.

Looking back, I feel like there were parts where I was a little indifferent, but as a whole, it did a great job of making you feel like you really know her (like her or not).

This book, and the way Busy writes it, is like you‘re sitting with her on a comfy couch with drinks while she tells you stories. I found it enjoyable, honest and fun. I especially liked that she doesn‘t hold back naming names, and though it‘s an unpopular opinion, I liked that she validated my extreme dislike of James Franco. Don‘t yell at me- he‘s gross (not looks-wise, but as a person). Anyway, it won‘t be for all but I liked it!

While a little uneven, I enjoyed this memoir from Busy Phillips. Her peek into how things work in tv and movies was fun and many of her personal stories were well told, powerful, and heartbreaking. Some nice moments about marriage and parenthood and great to hear in her own voice on audio.

It's always a challenge reviewing biographies. How on earth do you quantify a life like that. Fair warning, this book has major trigger warnings for rape and abortion. It was absolutely a must read/ hear as far as I'm concerned.

When teenage Busy got pregnant, her horrible boyfriend‘s mother tried to bully her into not having an abortion. When Busy‘s, very catholic, mom found out she had some words for this woman “MY DAUGHTER DID THIS? WHAT ABOUT YOUR SON?!...QUITE FRANKLY, I DON‘T THINK INTIMIDATING A SCARED 15 YEAR OLD BY TELLING SHE‘S GOING TO HELL IS VERY CHRISTIAN...DON‘T YOU EVER SPEAK TO HER THAT WAY AGAIN”. I‘m a little in love with Busy‘s mom.

I find it important to remember that when reading a person's autobiography or memoir, we are reading the story of their truth, and how they have experienced situations through their lives. I think she is a great example of persevering through tough times in your life, standing up for yourself, and not letting anyone dictate how you should be living your life. She certainly hasn't.

Cweeeevs Love this review! 😄 5y

Philipps is is happy to dish the dirt, be honest about her thoughts and feelings about everyone and everything, and at the same time is willing to be vulnerable and tackle some deeply personal events and issues. Equal parts gossipy and percipient, this memoir is an easy, and at times effecting read. Philipps has the extrovert with social anxiety patch covered, and if that sounds like you, this will be a reassuring read.

I love Bust Philipps, from freaks and geeks to cougar town. This book definitely sounded like her voice, full of some cool behind the scenes stories. I also learned a few things I did not know she did. She also uses this book to talk about some hard things that happened to her when she was young.

While I didn't count myself as one of Busy's fans before this #audiobook I do now, after finishing it. I say that because I feel like I used to only read "celebrity" memoirs if I was a fan. I have read some in the past couple of years and I am always entertained. This was no easy fluff read. There was some of that, but I was surprised at the deep, personal stories that Busy shared about her life. Some parts were down right moving. &her mom!!➡️♥️

TBH, I didn‘t really know much about Busy Phillips, in fact I‘m a little surprised I picked this up, her E! Show “Busy Tonight” is awful

However, the book was not. It‘s not just name dropping (but you do get a little tea) it was lighthearted while still being relatable.

Before reading this book, I didn‘t know a lot about Busy Phillips, but her memoir was entertaining. She doesn‘t shy away from naming names, and she shares some very vulnerable moments. As far as celebrity memoirs go, this wasn‘t the best. But I did enjoy it. Also, Busy‘s mom was by far my favorite person in the book!

In her book, Busy often asserts, “I am NOT an idiot.” And she‘s NOT. She may sound like a Valley Girl & look like Cher from Clueless/a Barbie (funny story about that) but that doesn‘t mean she‘s not smart. She understands the power of narrative (especially family narrative) over our lives, that words have multiple meanings, & that ambiguity does not signal weakness. This last is most apparent in the relating of her experience with sexual violence.

monalyisha 1/3: Busy is a GREAT storyteller. She‘s incredibly relatable, knows how to tease an audience‘s interest, & she deftly weaves common threads together, & brings it all back to the beginning in the end. 6y
monalyisha 2/3: But also: I‘m glad I listened to the audiobook rather than reading it in print. The tone is *very* conversational & the telling is enhanced by hearing it in Busy‘s own (excitable, dramatic, irreverent, earnest, & profane) voice. There‘s some real content: mental illness, gender relations, grief management, self-image. You can also expect some totally doofy stories about Middle School. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 3/3: If you‘re not already a fan, I‘d recommend seeking out her instagram stories first to see if you‘ll connect with her personality. As she admits, she‘s “a lot.” I happen to think she‘s mostly a whole lot of Good. 6y

I highly recommend the audio version, Busy does these voices for people, including her mom, that I found very entertaining. She's not shy about talking about messy, uncomfortable, unflattering things. She's such a fun interesting person and I love that she has her own talk show now (that I never get to watch bc I don't have cable, but w/e).
