A powerful coming-of-age story about the importance of finding your voice""Wayne Kovok lives in a world of After. After his uncle in the army was killed overseas. After Wayne and his mother survived a plane crash while coming back from the funeral. After he lost his voice. Wayne has always used his love of facts to communicate ("Did you know more people die each year from shaking a vending machine than from shark attacks?"). Without his voice, how will he wow the prettiest girl in school? How will he stand up to his drill-sergeant grandfather? And how will he share his hopes with his deadbeat dad? It's not until Wayne loses his voice completely that he realizes how much he" doesn't" say. Filled with Karen Harrington's signature heart and humor, "Mayday" tackles an unforgettable journey of family and friendship.

Missed out on two reads this month but I‘m hoping I‘ll get to them next month! May was a fabulous reading month! And I realized I haven‘t even reviewed all of these here so I‘ll need to catch up. I‘d recommend all of these titles! #bookspinbingo Several bingos!

15 books for May! A good mix, I think. I seem to be reading a lot of memoirs this year. They‘ve been enlightening. #mayreads

Here‘s how many books I read in May. This month, I focused on reading books I borrowed from #kindleunlimited and #primereading. I had a free 3 month trial of #kindleunlimited. I didn‘t read as many books as I wanted to read from #kindleunlimited because I was worried that I was going to forget to cancel my free trial. I haven‘t decided if I want to have a subscription to KU yet. I don‘t know if it‘s better than #primereading or not.

Latest #bookhaul includes the tagged that I picked up at a Little Free Library yesterday while dropping off a couple books. The rest are ones that *somehow* made their way into my cart when I was purchasing a book for the #litsyrecipeswap. Can‘t imagine how that happened 😆

Plus a nice warm weather nightgown and robe because what else am I going to wear while reading 📖

This is incredibly overdue, but I've been kind of "meh" with posting to various social media things. I've been reading...more slowly than normal...but not so much with the online engaging. May was a pretty good month. Revisited some old friends, picked back up a favorite genre, and spent some time with a few debuts.

Now to get caught up posting the things I've read so fast in June...

It's June!!!! May just flew by, didn't it?

I had the best reading month so far this year! My library finally got Hoopla so getting #audiobooks in now is a breeze.

13 books off my #bookspinbonanza list
1 #ARC
3 library holds
1 DNF

I didn't get all the way through my #TBR but I got a lot of unread books off my shelf and I'm happy with that.

Here's hoping #readyoursign keeps this going into June

TheAromaofBooks Oh here it is! I'm so sorry, I work through my tags from newest to oldest, so so far this morning I explained #BookSpin to you when you already knew what it was, told you I hadn't seen your list when here it is, and now found your list 😂 Sometimes I worry about me! You're totally on the list now, though! (edited) 5y

katy4peas @TheAromaofBooks no worries, I jumped in late, so I knew I missed the original tag. Your explanation was great and very helpful, I appreciate it! The bonanza spin is new to me and sounds very fun! Thank you! 😁 5y

May Stats.
This may be my slowest reading year of the past decade. I‘m struggling to find books I love and it‘s taking forever to finish the ones I start. Mostly 3 ⭐️ reads this month; a few 3.5 or 4 ⭐️s.

I enjoyed this middle grade story of a boy who survives a plane crash but can not speak for a time. I felt the family dynamics were realistic and Wayne‘s inner voice was s hoot.

TheBookStacker I got rid of about 70 books and it felt so good to get rid of many books I didn't like or didn't need 7y

Wayne Kovok survives a plane crash, but suffers a throat injury that leaves him without a voice. This is a serious blow, since he's used to spouting off random facts to fill up the awkward silences in his life. By not talking, he learns to listen, observe, & communicate more effectively. This is also a story about dealing with grief.

The writing is sometimes gimmicky ("true story") but still smart & enjoyable. I laughed, cried, & learned.

"I hoped I hadn't perspired too much during the run. I had precalculated the amount of Axe body spray I needed to use to make me smell acceptable by the time Sandy arrived. Two and a half sprays. That's the right amount. Anything more overpowers the bus. You learn this in sixth grade when a mean eighth-grade girl says, 'You smell like you want to be alone.' True story."

Meet Wayne Kovok: plane crash survivor, descendant of war heroes, random trivia expert, and above all, just a kid trying to find his voice--literally and figuratively. I've been a Karen Harrington fan since her first MG debut, Sure Signs of Crazy, and her third book is 3 for 3 in awesomeness!
