The Red Address Book
The Red Address Book | Sofia Lundberg
Written with love, told with joy. Very easy to enjoy.Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove For fans of A Man Called Ove and The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared comes a heartwarming debut about 96-year-old Doris, who writes down her memories as she pages through her decades-old address book. But the most profound moment of her life is still to come . . . Meet Doris, a 96-year-old woman living alone in her Stockholm apartment. She has few visitors, but her weekly Skype calls with Jennyher American grandniece, and her only relativegive her great joy and remind her of her own youth. When Doris was a girl, she was given an address book by her father, and ever since she has carefully documented everyone she met and loved throughout the years. Looking through the little book now, Doris sees the many crossed-out names of people long gone and is struck by the urge to put pen to paper. In writing down the stories of her colorful pastworking as a maid in Sweden, modelling in Paris during the 30s, fleeing to Manhattan at the dawn of the Second World Warcan she help Jenny, haunted by a difficult childhood, unlock the secrets of their family and finally look to the future? And whatever became of Allan, the love of Doriss life? A charming novel that prompts reflection on the stories we all should carry to the next generation, and the surprises in life that can await even the oldest among us, The Red Address Book introduces Sofia Lundberg as a wiseand irresistiblestoryteller.

This is a delightful book. Doris kept an address book with the names of people she met. It forms the heart of her stories about her life, recorded for her niece Jenny. The story alternates between Doris‘ life over the years and her last days in a hospital.

My second #translatedfromswedish book this year.

Doris‘ mother sends her to work at 13, unable to support both her children, offering the blessing quoted. After being a maid, Doris becomes a ‘live mannequin‘ and model in Paris. Then her mother dies and her sister Agnes arrives. And then the War begins.

When Doris and Agnes arrive in the US, they must find a way to survive.

I don't want to say much as this was an #LMPBC read, but I did enjoy the structure and story of this one, although I didn't find the mail love story as romantic as I think I was supposed to. Still, an enjoyable read that brings me to 9hrs 4mins for #EasterExtravaganza - on schedule for now, but with a strong chance of falling behind as I work W-F!!

So, I may have had unreasonable expectations for this. I never really ***felt*** the depth of either the address book or Doris and Jenny's relationship. Here's where my expectations may have been high: I had absolutely The Best Granny In History. Like, I can't tell you about her in the remaining 74 characters great. I was thinking this book was going to be like *that*. 💙 Be jealous. 😉 And, read the book if you have reasonable expectations.

I didn‘t love this as much as everyone else. The premise is fantastic but the modern story line was stilted, simplistic, and too unbelievable. The past stories of Doris‘ life told by the address book entries were better but still not as emotionally engaging as I‘d hoped. A sweet quick read that made me cry. 96 year old Doris lives a lonely life far away from her only relative, great niece Jenny. She tells Jenny the story of her life through her Red Address book, letters and the start of a manuscript. Within those pages you learn about the loves, adventures, tragedies that made up her Aunt Doris's life. Excellent quick read that i couldnt put down. Triggers for war violence, rape and infant loss.

This ARC ran the gamut of emotions...heart wrenching, despairing but ultimately triumphant. The life of a 96-year-old Swedish woman is told through letters she writes to her great-niece as she nears the end of her life. It‘s unique, as she centers her narrative around those folks she‘s met in her life who made it into her red address book...some she knew well, some not but almost all ended up with a strike through their name and DEAD written 🔽

robinb in the margins of the book. It‘s a story of loss, love, and desperately trying to survive during the tumultuous years of WW2 in Europe and the US. It was a bit depressing but also absorbing and yes, there were a few tears while reading. There was an uplifting ending however. 4.3/5⭐️ Trigger: There was a rape scene, not overly graphic. (edited) 6y
SilversReviews I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book....it was so good. One of my favorites of the year. 6y
robinb @SilversReviews it was good, wasn‘t it?!! 👍👍😊❤️ I thought the story premise being built around people that we come in contact with throughout our lives (from the address book) was a very interesting and unique one. I had actually been thinking about this as I addressed Christmas cards this year...those who have passed on or those who have moved and I‘m no longer in touch with. An address book is an excellent chronicler of one‘s life. 😊 6y
SilversReviews @robinb Oh....it was so good. The premise was marvelous. Fun about your thoughts as you addressed Christmas cards. I have my mother‘s address book and enjoy looking through it.
