The Wild Truth | Carine McCandless

A New York Times Bestseller "The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety."NPR.org The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book,Into the Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-one languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame. But the real story of Chriss life and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister. Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self-discovery, and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption. In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth.

Anschauen!

What do you call it when you skim the entire book because you don't like the author, only stopping to read certain parts you are looking for? Is it a bail, unfinished or finished? Really want to know.

staci.reads Maybe Litsy should add a "ended up skimming" button ? I could have used it a few times. (I think it counts as a pan). 4y
Prairiegirl_reading I say it‘s read. You got what you were looking for and it‘s not like anything else would have resonated had you read every word. And I agree that would be a pan. 4y
Daisey I count reads like this as a pan. I figure if I went through the whole book it counts as finished. 4y
keys_on_fire Almost like there should be a “Finished With It” button instead of just DNF! 4y
Kenyazero I'd call it self torture but also read 4y

Finished this wonderful book just now. I had known about it for quite a while. And owned it a while too. Now was the perfect time to read it and revisit the story of “Into the Wild” in a new way. Carine‘s story added so much and in many ways helped my own healing from trauma. Great book especially when paired with the previous book by Krakauer.

I‘m around 75% into this book and I am really enjoying it. It is definitely not what I expected and has been healing for me as I read because of my own childhood trauma. The book has brought me to tears at times and leads me to a spirit of overcoming hardships and moving forward. I read “Into the Wild” back when it first came out and was greatly impacted by it as well.

Chris McCandless‘s sister shares intimate background on brother Chris and their parents. Why did he forsake civilization and crave the wilderness?

This was really excellent. What an interesting experience this book provides! This book, written by Chris McCandless‘ sister is just so brutally honest and unflinching and gives a whole new perspective of his story. If you liked Into the Wild, this is a MUST read. Caring really develops this story and enlightens the reader on Chris‘ life and journey.

I understood more about Chris McCandless after reading this book. Carine was brutally honest about her family and it makes me wonder what their family relationship is like now after this book. I think she had to honor her brother and the questions many had as to why he did what he did. #carinemccandless

This book got me out of a serious reading slump. I literally read it in two sittings, could not put it down. I‘ve read Into the Wild and seen the movie, so I was a bit skeptical going into Carine‘s account of her and her brothers life but I was so, so wrong in my skepticism. Carina writes purely and truthfully.

Rachbb3 This was one of those books that make you queasy, at least for me. The movie made me queasy too. Lol. 7y

britt_brooke @Rachbb3 I understand what you mean. And I just don't really get the point of all if it. It's kind of a fascinating story, but seems so senseless. 7y

I read Into the Wild 16 years ago in grad school. I was excited to read this account of Chris McCandless childhood, as told by his sister Carine. I am sure telling the truth in this book has been freeing because she and her brother have had quite the life.

Wow, mind blown. I'd read "into the Wild" and seen the movie, but now I feel I know both sides. Bravery of the author is impressive and I, glad I listened.

Not so much an exposé as an emotional journey. Nothing shocking revealed that wasn't in "Into the Wild" to some extent, so if you're looking for scandal, you'll be underwhelmed, but a powerful, moving, intimate tale that's well written and, in my opinion, worth the time.

Ready to read the #truth

britt_brooke Curious about this one. I downloaded it the other day, but not sure when I'll get to it. 8y
BookDragonNotWorm @britt_brooke 40 pages in - don't think anything really scandalous is going to be revealed, but the writing is good and it's holding my attention. A little soon to tell, but probably a choice for when it's time for a nonfic but one that's easy and reads like fiction. 8y

3.5🌟 I read this in the wrong order - before Into the Wild. Nevertheless, it was a compelling look at a very broken family. It is much more personal than Into the Wild and fills in a lot of information about Chris' state of mind and his relationship with his parents and her before he left.

intothehallofbooks After reading and looooving Into The Wild for so long, I feel like I had a really strong reaction to this one. It was surprising to me actually. But I think this would be a good buddy read, these two books together. Very discussable as a duo. Possibly anyway 😜 9y
thelibraryofmars I was so psyched when this came out. I listened to the audiobook which she narrates quite nicely. I tried the movie (for Into the Wild) recently too but I felt it did the story a disservice. Have you seen it? 9y
Megabooks @asketchyeducation No, I haven't seen the movie. I either watch the movie or read the book. Rarely both because inevitably I'll hate whichever comes second! 9y
thelibraryofmars @Ebooksandcooks That's a pretty good strategy! 9y
