Courting Darkness
Courting Darkness | Robin LaFevers
First in a duology, this darkly thrilling page-turner set in the world of the best-selling His Fair Assassin series is perfect for fans of THRONE OF GLASS, RED QUEEN, and GAME OF THRONES. Told in alternating perspectives, when Sybella discovers there is another trained assassin from St. Mortain's convent deep undercover in the French court, she must use every skill in her arsenal to navigate the deadly royal politics and find her sister in arms before her time--and that of the newly crowned queen--runs out. When Sybella accompanies the Duchess to France, she expects trouble, but she isn't expecting a deadly trap. Surrounded by enemies both known and unknown, Sybella searches for the undercover assassins from the convent of St. Mortain who were placed in the French court years ago. Genevieve has been undercover for so many years, she no longer knows who she is or what she's supposed to be fighting for. When she discovers a hidden prisoner who may be of importance, she takes matters into her own hands. As these two worlds collide, the fate of the Duchess, Brittany, and everything Sybella and Genevieve have come to love hangs in the balance.

Glad I read my #TBRtarot pick right after the Grave Mercy Series so it‘s fresh in my mind. This one follows Sybella in the French Court where she‘s trying to find more of the female nun assassins assigned there in secret so we do get to meet some new characters. We get to meet Genevieve and see her POV and hope Sybella finds her in time. Of course we still get some real history woven in! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve been enjoying this. It kind of fills my heart up. But I‘ve also felt confused about the characters and the story. I felt like I was missing some vital piece of information.

Well, I just found out this is the spin off of a trilogy and that explains so much! So, I want to finish this, but I may need to get my hands on the trilogy soon!

“Sometimes,” he says softly, “the death of someone we hate is harder to bear than that of those we love… I think once they are dead, all things that might have been, all the truces that might have been called, all the broken pieces that might have been mended, are now sealed for all time. It is final, this hate.”

Overall Rating 4¼⭐ | Narration 😁 = Very Good
This series of books is filled with courtly intrigue, medieval douchebags (and some who aren‘t), and best of all...kickass females. It‘s refreshing to read/listen to a book that has women who are empowered to make a difference instead of being treated like chattel like it‘s their lot in life? If only ass-kicking females were a common occurrence in medieval times.

#bookreport While I finished four books this week, I wouldn't call it stellar. The Robin LaFevers series continues to be enjoyable, and it went downhill from there.

This is my current reading update. I went to the library finally this week 🙌 although I couldn't stay as long because I was teaching my brother in law (he is 9). The library had a wonderful flash sale and a big free collection which was awesome, and I picked up a couple.

I'm struggling with #proxima though. I've never read Stephen Baxter but this novel is depressingly violent and yet also boring this may turn into a DNR. 🙄

Nute Curious to know how you made out with Proxima? 4y
jessjess I think you have to be in the right headspace for Proxima, and I definitely wasn't. I kept putting it down in favour of other books and then neglecting to come back to it. Ultimately I put it back on the shelf and will try again in early 2021. 4y

I was very excited when I was reminded of this book by @alanacristin It‘s a follow-up to the His Fair Assassin YA fantasy trilogy, which is awesome! Girls being trained to become assassin nuns in the service of Death in 15th century Brittany/France! 🙋🏻‍♀️

And I was glad to learn that the tagged book is the first in a duology. Not every story needs to be a trilogy; too often there ends up being too much book and not enough story.

Ashley_Nicoletto I didn‘t realize this was a follow up to a different series. Do we think I need to read the first series before reading this one? 6y
AlaMich @Ashley_Nicoletto On LaFevers‘ website, she states that she wrote CD so that people who hadn‘t read the trilogy would still enjoy it. IMO, you would enjoy it more if you had read the first three. And of course, they are very good books in their own right. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I‘ll will have to look them up! I‘ve never read anything of hers, but I acquired this one recently. 6y

The first in a new duology, this book really assumes you've (recently) read the His Fair Assassin trilogy. I loved those books, but I had to hunt for detailed summaries online to adequately refresh my memory on all the characters. Alternating between the familiar Sybella and a new character Genevieve, this story focuses on adventures in the French court while still asserting Breton pride. Highly enjoyable! #mommyreads #historicalfiction #fantasy

alanacristin I miss the old cover styles though with the ladies 😍 6y
AlaMich I had totally forgotten about the new book until I saw that you liked my post. I‘m excited all over again! 😊 6y

Thank you @Sweetkokoro These books are beautiful and both of them sound really good! I love the constellation notebooks? The quote on the bookmark ?. "We are stardust, meant to shine". Thank you for the treats too! #SFFS Also, thank you for hosting this swap @Avanders

Sweetkokoro I‘m so glad you liked the box, I was so worried it wasn‘t enough since it was my first swap box ever. Boneless Mercies is a personal favorite of mine and I hope you enjoy it! Also the passion tea tastes amazing mixed with lemonade, it‘s my favorite way to drink it! I‘ll open my box as soon as I get home! 6y

Squee! This came in for me today at the library! It also made me realize I should probably get the original trilogy and try to find time to read it before starting this.

Also, loving the dark cover. And, the endpaper has texture!

More #bookmail from my B&N haul. Thankfully my books seem ok but both boxes were fairly damaged.

LibrarianRyan I wasn‘t impressed with BN book haul this time around. But I too picked up Courting Darkness and the danger one. (edited) 6y
TheLibrarian @LibrarianRyan I can see that. The ones I was super excited for I already owned but there was still a decent amount I had on my want to read list. 6y
LibrarianRyan Quick question, what type of librarian are you? Retired, school, academic? Etc 6y
See All 9 Comments
TheLibrarian @LibrarianRyan Academic! I handle electronic resources currently at a seminary. 6y
LibrarianRyan @TheLibrarian interesting. Is it as boring as a government doc librarian? Because it‘s a long slow winter here. 6y
LibrarianRyan One more question. If given the choice, build something or play something? 6y
TheLibrarian @LibrarianRyan It‘s pretty slow at my current place of employment but there aren‘t a whole lot of students. 6y
TheLibrarian @LibrarianRyan Play! Oh man, I‘ve only got one thing ordered for you right now. I must get a move on it! Am I safe buying non-syfy/fantasy items for myself? This would be a great opportunity to start a book buying-ban but I‘ll set myself up for failure 😂 6y
LibrarianRyan @TheLibrarian I took off any books on my want list that I just purchased off my want list. I‘m not going so much for a ban for my self, but then again maybe. I‘ve got 4 swaps coming up so I am trying to get my ideas finalized so I don‘t have to pay shipping. 6y

This features both Sybella & Beast, two of my fav characters! Sybella & her fellow handmaidens of Death are trying to come to terms with a world that does not include the presence that has always guided them. There was a building upon the previous series with the political environment & the struggles with the French. There‘s plenty to love in this sizable story! It‘s fast paced & a feast for the imagination. Full review at www.thegenreminx.com
