Dragon Pearl | Yoon Ha Lee
Rick Riordan Presents Yoon Ha Lee's space opera about thirteen-year-old Min, who comes from a long line of fox spirits. But you'd never know it by looking at her. To keep the family safe, Min's mother insists that none of them use any fox-magic, such as Charm or shape-shifting. They must appear human at all times. Min feels hemmed in by the household rules and resents the endless chores, the cousins who crowd her, and the aunties who judge her. She would like nothing more than to escape Jinju, her neglected, dust-ridden, and impoverished planet. She's counting the days until she can follow her older brother, Jun, into the Space Forces and see more of the Thousand Worlds. When word arrives that Jun is suspected of leaving his post to go in search of the Dragon Pearl, Min knows that something is wrong. Jun would never desert his battle cruiser, even for a mystical object rumored to have tremendous power. She decides to run away to find him and clear his name. Min's quest will have her meeting gamblers, pirates, and vengeful ghosts. It will involve deception, lies, and sabotage. She will be forced to use more fox-magic than ever before, and to rely on all of her cleverness and bravery. The outcome may not be what she had hoped, but it has the potential to exceed her wildest dreams. This sci-fi adventure with the underpinnings of Korean mythology will transport you to a world far beyond your imagination.

As I find with many of the Riorden Presents novels, the writing felt novice, lacking the “umph” you get from Riorden‘s actual books. The plot felt slow and fast at different points, shoveling out twists in the space of a paragraph and stretching out conversations for much longer than needed. But, as I always find in the Riorden Presents series, I enjoyed it despite all its low points. 4⭐️

A gumiho teen runs away on a spaceship and impersonated a Space Force cadet after her brother is accused of treason and desertion in this MG / YA novel blending science fiction and Korean mythology. Lots of action and adventure not to mention pirates and vengeful ghosts. Definitely a fun ride.

It took a bit to get into it, and then I was along for the ride. Min is a fox spirit (shapeshifter with Charm magic) who runs away, finagles her way onto a Space Force cruiser, impersonates a dead cadet, and unravels a centuries-old mystery with a dash of current deceit. Dragons, pirates, goblins, oh my. And I didn‘t expect to tear up, but I did, more than once.

Riordan's description is perfect: “Dragon Pearl will be like nothing you've ever read: a zesty mix of Korean folklore, magic, and science fiction that will leave you longing for more adventures in the Thousand Worlds!"

This book is great for students 5th+. It is action filled & the pace is perfect for middle school readers. It engages those who love fantasy & mythology & introduces them to sci-fi. Good for classes who are reading across genres.

Wow, that was a ride. Min as a character was so tantalizing to follow. The story felt like it really took its time building up. I really got a sense of what the Dragon Pearl could do before they got to it. I could feel the humming gi energy of the ship. Author Lee did amazing writing the details of this story. The mythology of the spirits and ghosts made more of a difference then I originally thought they would, too. #RiordanPresents

Half way review. The world building of Min on this stellar ship is very well done. Her conflicting missions of finding what happened to her brother alongside a ghost that demands she find his killer is so dramatic. Yet she keeps up being him, using her fox magic, very well through the classes with her “friends”. One a non-binary goblin, the other a dragon. Being the first Riodran sci-fi story, it‘s doing incredible. #RiordanPresents

Interesting on how Min and her family being fox spirits is so frowned upon while those other spirits are praised. If anything goes haywire in their little dome area, they‘d get blamed for it -if they knew they were foxes. This hidden prejudice sounds like it will be a major part of helping Min getting off world to find Jun. I love how it‘s being previewed so far when she‘s doing fox magic. Like a sneeze coming, but not going. #RiordanPresents

My nieces and I really enjoyed Dragon Pearl. We've been reading it as our book club book for the past while. It blends Korean folklore with science fiction, fantasy and space travel. There is a non binary character and shapeshifters which both challenge traditional gender expectations. We can't wait for the second book to come out! #nonbinaryboks

Loved it. It has action, magic, science, betrayal, courage and ultimately love and faith win it all. Min is complex, fun to follow and learn this world with. I had no knowledge of Korean mythology and just dived into this very vivid world the writer offered us, readers. I could feel the sand, hear the sounds of the boots on the metal floors of the space ships and see the ghosts. #booked2019 #summer

I hope we get more adventures from this world.

Okay so I had a friend read this and she didn't end up loving it even though she was so hyped for it. That made me pretty hesitant to pick it up but BOY OH BOY WAS SHE WRONG! I freaking loved this! The characters were solid (I adore Min) and the mystery kept me guessing. I loved getting Korean mythology interwoven (shout out to the damn prime example of an ally: Rick Riordan) into a sci-fi. It really did help make the book and the magic different.

The mythology and world-building is fabulous! I enjoyed the adventure and immersing myself in her world, but found her inability to build connections with other people disappointing. There was also a lot of back and forth with loyalty that seemed added for “dramatic effect”, though it instead left me exasperated. Those minor concerns aside, this was a wonderful foray into the world of science fiction with a healthy dose of mythology throughout!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was quite similar to Percy Jackson books in story & pacing with main character Min getting into one scrape after another. But what made it more enjoyable for me than PJ & the Greek gods was that I‘m not familiar with the Korean mythology system, so I couldn‘t tell where the story was going as soon as a new character was introduced. It is a fun, middle grade read, and I‘m excited for the other books in the Rick Riordan Presents series!

Love this!!! What a great way to use his fame platform - not only celebrating other cultures‘ stories but their authors as well!

LibrarianRyan that's how he got his own imprint. Kids were asking him to write mythology from their cultures and he said he couldn't because he didn't know them well enough. This was his answer. So far he as Cuban, Korean, Indian (I think), Mayan, African American legends and folklore are coming in October, and native american is coming in January. So very excited. My #LMPBC group is going to read the October book since I have a galley. Cant wait! 5y

Space opera meets Korean folklore in this fun little adventure featuring Min, a 13-year old girl from a less-developed planet who, due to various unforeseen incidents, ends up on a military spaceship thing and suddenly everything is madness. Especially when there are ghosts. Those are full madness.
