High Season
High Season | Judy Blundell
"A shimmering story of art, money, and celebrity, The High Season is wicked summer fun."--Helen Simonson, New York Times bestselling author of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand The Hamptons hath no fury like a woman scorned. No matter what the world throws her way, at least Ruthie Beamish has the house. Lovingly renovated, located by the sea in a quiet Long Island village, the house is her nest egg--the retirement account shared with her ex-husband, Mike, and the college fund for their teenage daughter, Jem. The catch? To afford the house, Ruthie must let it go during the best part of the year. It's Memorial Day weekend and Ruthie has packed up their belongings for what Jem calls "the summer bummer" the family's annual exodus to make way for renters. This year, the Hamptons set has arrived. The widow of a blue-chip artist, Adeline Clay is elegant, connected, and accompanied by a "gorgeous satellite" stepson. But soon Adeline demonstrates an uncanny ability to help herself to Ruthie's life--her house, her friends, even her husband (okay, ex-husband, but still). And after her job as the director of a local museum is threatened, Ruthie finally decides to fight back. Meanwhile, away from the watchful eyes of her parents, Jem is tasting independence at her first summer job, but soon finds herself growing up too fast. One of Ruthie's employees, a master of self-invention named Doe, infiltrates the inner circle of an eccentric billionaire and his wayward daughter. With a coterie of social climbers and Ruthie's old flame thrown into the mix, the entire town finds itself on the verge of tumultuous change. By the end of one unhinged, unforgettable summer, nothing will be the same. In a novel packed with indelible characters, crackling wit, and upstairs/downstairs drama, Judy Blundell emerges as a voice for all seasons--a wry and original storyteller who knows how the most disruptive events in our lives can twist endings into new beginnings. Praise for The High Season"Can't think of a better beach read to kick off the dog days. [Judy] Blundell's adult debut has it all: glamorous Hamptons intrigue, cutting satire, and a woman scorned--struggling to keep her crumbling life together over one delectably unhinged summer."--Entertainment Weekly "If you loved The Affair, you'll love this book."--Glamour

Ruthie, Mike, and teen daughter, Jem, live in a seaside town on Long Island. In order to afford such a lavish property they have to rent out their house for the summer to wealthy Manhattanites hungry for a summer beach experience. The family would live in a small apartment for those three months. The profit would all but pay for their house for the rest of the year. It was a great idea until the wrong person rented their home for the summer.

This was on the modernmrsdarcy “Hot Summer Books for 2018” list. Yea, yea, I know it‘s January but there was no hold for it at the library so why not live vicariously? It has low ratings so I was skeptical going in, but I enjoyed it. There are a ton of characters and lots of spoiled rich people problems, but I liked the theme of friendship throughout the book. Also Julia Whelan is the audiobook narrator and she is fabulous as always.

TerriGreen Fun! I love that audiobook narrator! I am such a seasonal reader I can‘t read beach books in January. 🌴🌊 5y

I liked this. It took a little bit to get into and at first I thought the chapters didn‘t blend very well. It came together about halfway through and I enjoyed it.

This was a great cruise read. The characters were interesting and varied. It was great to read about the drama of a beach town on the beach.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I felt that most of the characters we not redeemable. However, when an author incites those feelings than they have done their job.

Ruthie lives in Orient, a less ritzy beach town than the Hamptons, but when the super wealthy begin moving in a class war of sorts begins. Awesome character development, excellent plot, beautiful setting, interesting themes, and highly readable...this lovely book truly has it all! Highly recommended as a perfect beach/summertime read! 😍🌟

Hi friends!! I took a little Litsy break to focus on life and wedding planning but I‘m back now and am so in need of my bookish friends!! @JessReads and I had a wonderful bookish discussion yesterday. What are you must reads for summer 2018?!

TheBookKeepers Welcome back! So far my favorite new release is 6y
laurieluna Welcome back! Can understand the break, life can get overwhelming sometimes! Agree with @TheBookKeepers on Circe. It's currently sat on my shelf and I hope to get to it over the summer. X 6y
Kendra.Diane @TheBookKeepers @miralunasbooknook I read this for book of the month and loved it!! 6y
TheBookKeepers Ah yay!! Well a follow up recommendation I have is this tagged book. It‘s historical fiction and inspected from true events. I *think* it‘s publish date is either 2017 or 2018. Excellent read! 6y

I‘m not a fan of this one. I‘m mad at myself for finishing it. I kept thinking it would improve. The plot follows selfish people who continually treat each other badly & focus on wealth over all else. It was exhausting to read about their petty problems. “Maybe all relationships, friendship, partner, parent and child, were held together by the things you did not say as much as the things you did. The unsaid was the keystone in the arch.”

This was an entertaining and fun read surrounding social class and the allure and mishaps that accompany each level. From love affairs to breakups, everlasting friendships to teenage bullying, and acceptance to rejection; the reader experiences a myriad of life milestones through the lives of the colorful and quirky characters.

Gamut of emotions over this book...surprised, appalled, sad, mad...a little of everything. Basically two stories here. A woman has her world upended, how far will she go to get it back? Also a tale of social class, those who have and have not and how desperate money decisions can sometimes lead to surprising results. The characters all struggle with their own demons here, but in the end, there is hope.
Thanks #NetGalley and #RandomHouse. 4/5⭐️🔽

robinb Let me add a caveat here. There was a situation in this book between a 15 yo and a 23 yo that disturbed me and that I felt was NOT handled well. And while I occasionally had some empathy for a couple of these characters, overall I found them graspy, greedy and selfish. That being said, I loved the writing here and the flow of the plot. 7y
tammysue Nice review Robin! x 7y
robinb @whatshesreadingnow Thanks, but I feel like it‘s probably confusing! 🤪 On the one hand, I loved the writing flow and some of the passages were just so spot-on. But on the other hand, the 15/23 yo relationship was very disturbing and really none of the characters (besides the 15 yo) were that likable. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🙄🙄 I guess I‘m a little confused myself about why I ended up liking it. 🤣🤣 7y

Had the privilege to hear two authors speak tonight. The first is this author, whose tagged book comes out in May and who also writes under Jude Watson. I jotted down a quote from her talk: “Isn‘t that what community is...hanging out with people that annoy you?”

This book takes place on the northern tip of Long Island. Ruthie rents out her house every summer, in order to pay the bills. This summer‘s tenant could change everything. #PLA2018

AmyG Hahahaha that quote! My husband was once the mayor of our town. I couldn‘t agree more. 7y
