Edgar Award Winner for Best Novel"Highly intelligent entertainment, beautifully written with wit and humor." -- Frances Fyfield"It grips like grim death." -- The Spectator"Fremlin is a major mistress of insight and suspense." -- The New York TimesIn this Edgar Award-winning thriller, a young housewife with two lively daughters and an endlessly crying baby battles domestic chaos as well as growing suspicions of the household's new lodger. Are Louise's fears the product of sleep deprivation, as her unsympathetic husband suggests, or is there really something sinister about the respectable-seeming schoolmistress?During the hours before dawn, Louise suspects, people with a precarious grip on sanity are likeliest to slip over the edge into madness -- especially if there's someone ready to give them a push. Without spilling a drop of blood, this psychological thriller transforms everyday events and settings into the extraordinary, evoking an atmosphere of sheer terror. Crime novelist Andrew Taylor hailed author Celia Fremlin as "Britain's equivalent to Patricia Highsmith ... her novels are domestic, subtle, penetrating -- and quite horribly chilling."

Such witty writing I didn‘t expect! Most of the characters are quite disagreeable, but Fremlin sketches them in such an amusing way. Any caretaker of young children will relate to the exhausted and harried protagonist. 😵‍💫

Though I knew Ms. B was up to no good, I didn‘t see the twist coming. 🫣

I get the Fremlin love! @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts What should I try next?

Cathythoughts Great review! What to try next … , they are all good to be fair. The one I just finished was very good 2y

I was not expecting this mystery novel to be so humorous! I rarely laugh out loud while reading, but I‘ve laughed several times already and I‘m only on pg. 39.

I bet a lot of moms thought this in the 50‘s, but didn‘t dare express it aloud. 😅

LeahBergen 😆 It‘s good, isn‘t it? 2y
Cathythoughts I‘m glad it‘s going well. 👍🏻❤️ 2y

A smart, perfectly-structured book of domestic terror, & a perfect way to cap off #CloakAndDaggerChristmas. I never wanted to leave Louise's sleep-deprived mind. The writing is superb & shot through with mordant humour. I love the ironic references to the psychological trends that were part of the 1950s discourse. With gender roles clearly demarcated in this era, the real monster in the house is the husband, imo. Hit him with a frying pan, Louise!

batsy This was also my pick for this month's #TBRtarot @CBee 2y

A sleep-deprived mother of two young girls and a baby, and an oblivious husband take in a lodger. She soon become suspicious of the lodger but between the chaotic household routine and her exhaustion, are all the sinister going-ons part of her imagination? Good plotting and great atmosphere, it also portrays the challenge of motherhood in the 1950s with a little humour. The tension and suspense mounts slowly, the writing rambles a bit, 👇

erzascarletbookgasm ..(cont) but it serves to add to the state of mind of the unreliable narrator. A satisfying psychological suspense read. Recommended. 👍
Thanks for bringing this book to my attention, @cathythoughts .

In my current read, Louise is a young housewife with two young daughters and a baby who cries every night, leaving her awake to nurse her baby intermittently. Already lack of sleep for weeks, she is overwhelmed by domestic chaos, prying and complaining neighbours, and a growing suspicion of her new lodger. She cannot differentiate between dream and reality and things turn serious when she ‘keeps losing her baby‘.

#TimbitTunes #BuildingaMystery ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Originally published 1958, the mystery builds as Louise , exhausted mother of three , takes in a lodger. Eerie, suspenseful, brilliant, clever & so readable. 👍🏻

For anyone wistfully wishing to be a 1950s housewife here's a bucket of cold water based on Freeman's own experience and published in 1958.

Louise's baby will not sleep through the night. Trying to care for baby, daughters and husband she is almost going insane from exhaustion. When a new lodger raises her suspicions, she is unsure what is reality and what is waking nightmare. Social satire and psycologial horror in a gripping thriller

I was just thankful to finish this book - it didn‘t live up to its ‘masterpiece‘ review and was really difficult to read. Had lots of excess conversation information which I didn‘t think of was needed for only 241 pages it took me weeks to read

Found this cool first edition at my favorite antique store today! I've never heard of it but apparently it won the #edgaraward PLUS it's about a 60s housewife who thinks she's losing it which is one of my fave tropes. I'm really looking forward to this one! Does anyone know anything about it?
