"One of America's greatest novelists" dazzlingly reinvents the coming-of-age story in his most passionate and surprising book to date Sinuously constructed in four interlocking parts, Paul Auster's fifteenth novel opens in New York City in the spring of 1967, when twenty-year-old Adam Walker, an aspiring poet and student at Columbia University, meets the enigmatic Frenchman Rudolf Born and his silent and seductive girfriend, Margot. Before long, Walker finds himself caught in a perverse triangle that leads to a sudden, shocking act of violence that will alter the course of his life. Three different narrators tell the story of Invisible, a novel that travels in time from 1967 to 2007 and moves from Morningside Heights, to the Left Bank of Paris, to a remote island in the Caribbean. It is a book of youthful rage, unbridled sexual hunger, and a relentless quest for justice. With uncompromising insight, Auster takes us into the shadowy borderland between truth and memory, between authorship and identity, to produce a work of unforgettable power that confirms his reputation as "one of America's most spectacularly inventive writers."

📘 Last week I read #invisible by the late #PaulAuster . I like this book. It‘s told in first, second, and third person, and there are 3 narrators. The style is very creative and purposeful.
📘 Read if you like college age coming-of-age, stories set in the 1960s, or stories about families coping with tragedy.

🌙 This is my second by #Auster - I loved Moon Palace too.

I‘m not exactly sure what happened, what was true and what was fantasy, or what to think about any of it. I do know that I enjoyed the unusual style and brilliant writing in this book, was mesmerized by the mystery and weirdness of it all, and I am low-key in love with Adam Walker, despite his moral failings and icky decisions.

But... if you are looking for a nice, easy story with no triggers, keep scrolling. 😳

sprainedbrain I‘m so glad you picked this for #LMPBC, Karen! I will get to the post office by the end of the week to send it home to you. 😘 @Chili 5y
Chili @sprainedbrain I‘m glad you liked it. Although I think 4 3 2 1 is much better. I loved Archie. 😘😉 5y
sprainedbrain @Chili I still need to get to that one, and if it‘s better, perhaps I should move it up the ol‘ priority list. 😂 5y

Chili @sprainedbrain I would definitely move it up the list. It is a chunkster. 😆🦩 5y
Prairiegirl_reading Paul Auster is still a tbr author for me. I will read something by him at some point! 5y
Leftcoastzen I really enjoyed this book , I think your review captures it well. 5y
Bookish.SAM Have you read his New York Trilogy? My 1st Auster... I was frustrated throughout, three separate but related shorter stories, by the end (for the first and only time in my life) I literally threw the book across the room. Mind blown. And I cannot wait to re-read it! 5y
sprainedbrain @Bookish.SAM I haven‘t, but that one is on my list too. This was actually my first Auster. I‘m very much looking forward to more now! 5y
Reggie That last sentence got me! 5y
sprainedbrain @Reggie I think you would like this! 5y

Mehso-so

On the one hand, this book was riveting and compelling. I raced through. On the other hand, it was jarring and a little experimental and didn‘t quite come together plot-wise for me. But I am definitely glad I read it and am interested in reading another from Auster.

@suvata This is on its way to you a little early!!

Chili @thebluestocking This was definitely my least favorite Auster. 5y
thebluestocking @Chili What would you recommend I read next from him? 5y
Chili @thebluestocking I really liked 4 3 2 1 and The Book of Illusions. Timbuktu was so-so, but better than Invisible. That‘s all I‘ve read so far. I have The New York Trilogy on my TBR shelf. (Ok TBR bookshelves) 5y

Chili @thebluestocking I‘m glad it arrived safely! 🤓 5y
thebluestocking @Chili It did. And was so fun to open. 💙 5y
Billypar I went to a reading where Auster selected the most outrageous part to read. You'll know which when you get to it, trust me! 5y

thebluestocking @Billypar Ooh. Something to look forward to. 💙 5y
Billypar Well, not outrageous in a good way, to be clear. But I'll look forward to your review - this one had a lot going on from what I remember, but it's been years since I read it. 5y
thebluestocking @Billypar I have heard something of the shocking content in this one. Interesting that the author selected it for a reading. 5y

This book was odd. I thought it was something different than it ended up being in just about each section. There were some "Holy WTF!l moments. I'll be thinking about this one for some time to come. The ending was weird. While I'm torn between Pick and So-So, I was interested throughout and not disappointed by the weird ending. It had me rethinking the entire book.

This is a quick read to me. I finished the first two sections. All I kept thinking was "WTF???!?!!?!!" There is some messed up stuff in this book. Let's see what the second half brings.

Boo for laundry. Yeah! for reading in between loads. I've had this book on my shelf for years. The blurb on the back about "sudden, shocking act of violence" having to do with a love triangle caught my attention. I'm hoping this is a wild ride.

Dogearedcopy That's weird... I totally remember reading this novel; *but I can't remember a single thing about it!* I remember having the hardback; but when I just went to Wikipedia to check out the plot summary, I have only the vaguest recollection of it. Even though, by default this would be a "So-So" rating from me, I must have been impressed enough to get '4 3 2 1' without a second thought! 8y
Clare-Dragonfly Ooh, that sounds intriguing. I look forward to seeing what you think! 8y
LitHousewife @Dogearedcopy I would say that's not a good sign at all. I'm just about 20 pages in and enjoying getting to know the characters. 8y
LitHousewife @Clare-Dragonfly 20 pages in and I'm enjoying it. I've got my fingers crossed. 8y
