Laura Ingalls Wilder is beginning her life with her new husband, Almanzo, in their own little house. Soon their baby daughter, Rose, is born, and the young family must face the hardships and triumphs encountered by so many American pioneers.

This book was an unfinished manuscript. I still really enjoyed it even if it wasn‘t as Laura would have published it. There were plenty of brilliant descriptions of things. During the four years the crops never did flourish, though they did well with their animals. The weather was the culprit – hail, a tornado, drought, fire. Also blizzards in winter factored into their lives. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I have a beautiful “full color collector‘s edition”, which has very nice glossy colour illustrations 9mo

I listened to the audiobook, I own a physical copy of the book. I know that this book wasn't finished. I did enjoy seeing Laura and Almanzo early married life. I grew up on this series. I rated this book a 5 out of 5 stars for childhood memories.

While this was my least favorite of the Little House books, that's still not a bad rating, considering I absolutely love the entire series. I think it's important to read this book for what it is - an outline/concept for a book - rather than a finished product. I personally think that if Laura had finished this book, she would have spent more time drawing out the happy times to balance out the story of the incredibly bad luck that plagued them. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I really do wish she had finished it, because there are some really interesting bones here and I would have loved more details on so many different things. To me, what really came through was the genuine love and respect that Laura and Manly had for each other. I loved the line, “It was a carefree, happy time, for two people thoroughly in sympathy can do pretty much as they like.“ Laura wrote that after being married to this guy for ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) around 60 years, so I felt like it spoke well of their overall relationship and time together. I loved the all the little things she mentions Manly doing for her, like buying her a pony and sending someone else to finish her least-favorite chore! understand why many people don't care for this one because it definitely is much sadder in tone than the other books, and abrupt in places, but what I saw was two young people who cared about ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) each other deeply, determined to continue fighting the elements to find a good life together.

Thanks again for hosting our readalong of this series @megnews - I really, really enjoyed it and have been meaning to revisit these for years. It was so much fun to read and discuss as a group!!

AnnR Great review! I basically felt the same way about the book. 1y
BarbaraJean What a wonderful review. I felt the same way, wanting more details of their life together to balance out the sketch of a terrible four years of farming! I love the way you pointed out the view this gives of their relationship. Wilder never does give many details about her emotions about Manly, in any of the books! But there were so many moments here that demonstrated how much they cared for each other and what a strong marriage they must have had. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I don't know why, but when he sent someone else to wash the windows for her - specifically that, not just “have her do whatever you need her to do“ - it just really touched me haha I think this book would have been SO interesting if she had finished it, a way to bring things full-circle to Rose being the same age as Laura was in Big Woods. 1y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 1y
Librarybelle I think The Longest Winter is my favorite from the series, but I do remember liking this one when I read it! 1y

Catching up on July reviews!

The final book in the #LittleHouse series was published from Wilder‘s unedited manuscript, and has a much different feel than the rest of the books in the series. I‘m glad it was published and I did enjoy reading about the first few years of Laura and Almanzo‘s married life, but it felt very thin in comparison to the other books. There was so much that I wish had been fleshed out more. And holy cow, the ending! ⤵️

BarbaraJean I‘m so glad @megnews hosted this buddy read—it was my first time reading the series and it was such a great experience reading along with the group. I understand now why these books are so beloved, why they‘re so problematic, and also why they‘re still such a valuable historical resource. And this marks a series finished for #SeriesLove2023! @TheSpineView @Andrew65 (edited) 1y

I didn‘t read these as kids and it‘s pretty easy to understand why now. It wouldn‘t have spoken to my fantasy loving soul. But I‘ve really enjoyed this read along with @megnews even joining late. This wasn‘t my favorite and was evident it hadn‘t been edited. Important though. Attached picture is for Laura Days in WI :)

I didn‘t care for this final installment of the #LittleHouse series as much as the others. Perhaps it‘s the writing. Perhaps because mischievous Laura is all grown up. While I wish it had been done differently, its inclusion is still an important part of the series.
Thank you to everyone who joined in on this journey. It‘s been a delight.

Bookwormjillk I agree with you about this book, but am really grateful that you hosted. 1y
TheAromaofBooks Thank you so much for leading this series readalong!! I have been meaning to revisit these books for years, and being able to do so with such a delightful group of readers increased my enjoyment so much. Now that I'm an adult, I wish Laura had written more about her own adult life, because I would have loved more details. She an Almanzo were married over 60 years!! 1y
julieclair I am so thankful for the opportunity to finally read these books, and to discuss them with bookish friends. It has been a joy. Thank you SO much for hosting! 💐💖 1y

mrp27 This is my least favorite book in the series. I agree with it not being fleshed out enough and the tone felt very different from her previous book. Still, an integral part to Laura‘s story. 1y
AnnR Thank you @megnews for all the time and effort you put into leading this fun discussion. I agree with many of the comments above. This was my least favorite book in the series, although it was considered to be an unfinished manuscript when published so maybe that isn't a fair comparison. 1y
sblbooks This was my least favorite as well. Likely because it was not actually finished by Wilder, herself. I'm so glad you decided to do this read along! Thanks so much! 1y
BarbaraJean I agree, this was lacking in comparison to the earlier books. I wish she'd been able to flesh it out to the same level. And holy crap, the ending! I couldn't believe that's where the series ends! I understand publishing the manuscript as is, but maybe Rose could have added an epilogue? Something?!? But I have LOVED this readalong—thank you so much for hosting!! It was my first time reading these & it was a delight to discuss them with everyone. 1y
Vansa I have to say that I found this book fascinating -its quite clearly written for adults, and I loved the details about leading an agricultural life, and the debt traps farmers get into. Its the same still in many countries, where farmers are not able to make profits off something that's so dependent on the vagaries of nature.I found it deeply sad that by the end, she's convincing herself that this is what she wants, when she's not being given a choice. 1y
BethM Not my favorite either but I‘ve loved this read along! 1y

Laura wants out of farming. Manly convinces her on 1 more year. He keeps buying stuff on credit. Wolves. Books. Wind. Fire. Rose loves horses as much as Laura. Tornado. Losing a baby 😞. A fire destroys their home. Manly‘s incurable optimism would drive me crazy: “Was farming a success? ‘It depends on how you look at it.‘” Lots of life lived in this one year that didn‘t feel like a “year of grace.”

Bookwormjillk Not a year of grace at all. Yikes. Poor Laura. 1y
TheAromaofBooks I really wish she had decided to flesh this book out into a longer story. So much of this is just bare bones and I really wanted more. Earning that “free“ land from the government is definitely not the easy path to wealth! 1y
mrp27 Devastating chapter. So much emotional hardship. 1y

sblbooks With everything that's going wrong, no wonder Laura wants out. Farming is such a hard life. 1y
BarbaraJean I was expecting something much different based on the chapter title!! It was a year of grace extended to the profession of farming, not a year of grace for their family. 😔 The ending made me really wish she'd fleshed this one out more. I mean, I was already wishing that, but this last section intensified my desire for more details and more closure to her story overall. 1y
BethM I agree with @BarbaraJean what a chapter 1y

Ch 3 - Two things really stood out to me in this chapter. The diphtheria scare - I didn‘t recognize it because I didn‘t know the symptoms. Reminded me a little of when the whole Ingalls family was so sick. Also, the loss of the wheat crop and moving again. I could not be a farmer and be at the mercy of nature all the time. Will Almanzo make good next year and leave farming if it doesn‘t work out?

Bookwormjillk Seems like they can't catch a break! 1y
BethM Mother Nature is fickle. 1y
sblbooks It truly does seem like it's one thing after another. 1y
mrp27 I would be so aggravated relying on nature for my income. 1y
BarbaraJean All of the disappointments over the harvest keep reminding me of the earlier books, especially Plum Creek with the grasshopper summer. I guess at least they haven‘t had balls of fire rolling at them across the prairie. Yet. 😆 1y

Ch 2- Baby Rose arrives. It seemed to me, with Laura‘s double vision, that perhaps she had preeclampsia. I was quite shocked by Mr Boast asking the Wilders to give them baby Rose. What were your thoughts on the second year of their marriage?

Bookwormjillk That shocked me too. That was the same family they always had holidays with right? 1y
megnews @Bookwormjillk yes. And I imagine they‘re closer to pa‘s age since they were friends. Quite strange 1y
mrp27 I was horrified by Mr.Boast and clearly the Wilder‘s were too. I doubt their friendship continued after that! 1y
See All 7 Comments
TheAromaofBooks I think it's interesting how much specific detail Laura writes about how much money they are making, what they owe, etc. I wonder if those details would have stayed in the final form of the book, or if they were for her outline to help give her a general direction of what she wanted to share? 1y
sblbooks I thought there would be more detail about Rose's birth. I can't believe The Boast's thought they could just trade a horse for Rose. If they wanted a baby why didn't they just adopt? The orphan trains were running during this time. 1y
BethM That was insane. I‘m not loving this book. The tone is different and feels stressful. 1y
BarbaraJean I was shocked by the Boasts as well. That seemed to come out of nowhere. They‘ve always been such good friends to the Ingalls and there were no hints that they would come up with such an out-of-line request! It would have been really interesting to see how Laura would have written that scene if it had been fleshed out more. 1y

Read this all at once since it was so short. This book was dark 😳

TheAromaofBooks It's interesting as the introduction says that this was published after her death from the outline notes she had made - I wonder if she would have fleshed it out with some more balanced happy times if she had turned into a book as long as her others? 1y
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks I think so. Seemed more truthful, but not her usual. 1y
AnnR Well said. I think the least depressing parts of this book were the illustrations. 1y

I thought this was such beautiful imagery of Laura and Almanzo‘s rides together. The first chapter opens with a repeat of the engagement, wedding, and overview of their home and sudden Almanzo is Manly. Laura shares her reluctance to marry a farmer. Laura bakes a pie for guest workers and forgets the sugar! 😂 Laura, being small, struggles to do some of the chores alone. And Laura gets a surprise proposal from a Native American. I was 👇🏻

megnews 👆🏻disappointed Ma‘s fear about Indians had rubbed off on Laura. Later in their first year, the Wilders host their first extended family holiday celebration and then Laura gets the news she‘s expecting! As farmers do, they face destruction of crops and as many young couples do, they end up with money woes. Let‘s hope the second year goes better! What did you think of their first year? 1y
Vansa I found it deeply sad that Laura so vehemently did not want to lead the life of a farmer, and was so overruled, and then did farming her entire life! Also the writing is a lot more stark, and factual than the other books-it made it more interesting, with all those details of taking equipment on credit, how that was worked off and so on.The Native Americans scene was hard to read, the only person who was savage in that scene was Laura! 1y
AnnR I attempted to read this book before and had difficulty getting through the first chapter. The writing style has such a sharp contrast to the other books. The Wilders had a rough time of it their first year. 1y
See All 13 Comments
mrp27 Yes, I‘m so surprised to realize how much she didn‘t like to teach and how much she didn‘t want to be a farmers wife and yet she did it. 1y
Bookwormjillk I cracked up when Laura said she‘d rather have a mortgage on Manley than on the horses 🤣🤣🤣🤣 1y
TheAromaofBooks While I agree that Laura was prejudiced against the Indians, I also felt like she was a single, unprotected woman whose home was being approached by five strange men whose intentions were completely unknown. I wouldn't have opened the door, either! I think she would have been just as concerned if it had been a group of rowdy white strangers as well. 1y
TheAromaofBooks I loved the descriptions of them spending time together riding and working. This sentence especially caught me - “It was a carefree, happy time, for two people thoroughly in sympathy can do pretty much as they like.“ Considering she was writing this after being married for decades, it seems to speak well for their years together. All the sweet little things Manly did for her, like buying the pony and sending someone to wash the windows - just❤❤❤ 1y
megnews @mrp27 such was a woman‘s life then I guess. Doing things you don‘t want to do. Few options 1y
megnews @Ann_Reads writing style is definitely different 1y
BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk I laughed at that, too! Seems there‘s still a question of whether she‘s just with him for his horses 😂 @TheAromaofBooks I agree—she was alone, outnumbered by a group of men—I‘m sure her fears were intensified by her prejudice, but that wasn‘t the only thing happening there. I loved that what prompts her to action is a threat to the horses! Also: great points about their relationship—she‘s looking back on this with such fondness. 1y
BarbaraJean @Vansa I thought the details about credit were interesting, too. I also got that same feeling of dread I had in the earlier books, when Pa is planning to pay off his debts with the upcoming crop. 😬 THAT is why Laura didn‘t want to farm! @Ann_Reads The writing style is SO different! I wonder what this book would have been like if she‘d edited and rewritten/expanded it like the others. This feels a little like an outline needing to be fleshed out. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I keep feeling the same way about the story needing more details. I also wonder if the tone would have been different if she had gone back and added more details, if some of these stories of difficulties would have been balanced by things like a more thorough description of their first holiday season together, other adventures while out on their rides, or random housekeeping mistakes/misadventures as Laura adjusts to her new life. 1y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I miss the Christmas chapters!! 1y

Also, apparently it's my 4-year Litsyversary today! 🥂
To celebrate here are 4 things to know about me:
1) I've published 2 books & several short stories & I'm doing my best to keep that racket going but some days are harder than others.
2) I only wear glasses when I'm writing.
3) I live in Oregon & hike a lot.
4) Charlie Waffles is my dog. He likes long walks, chasing squirrels, & sleeping in sun spots. He's a beagle/dachshund mix. Probably.

As a family we have given nearly every out of town road trip to discover and rediscover the Ingalls and Wilder families through reading the first 9 books. We are sorry to say goodbye to these characters, their joys & triumphs, loss & hardship. Separating this last title out from the others, Laura is a young bride and pushed to burden much more than several people combined should endure and yet she remained hopeful against all the odds.

AmyG What great books. I love this. ❤️ 4y

This book is suitable for older elementary school readers, and encompasses the feeling and lifestyle of the pioneer times. It is a perfect historical fiction book

The final book in the series is very short & covers only a brief glimpse into Laura‘s new life with Manly & her daughter Rose. The pacing feels rushed, like she was skimming over their lives. The book feels a bit like an after thought and I almost wish the series had ended with These Happy Golden Years. Apparently it wasn‘t published until 30 years later. Regardless, I‘ve loved reading this series with my daughter and I‘ll miss these stories!

The Little House Books were a favorite of mine growing up and while I was overcome with nostalgia for revisiting my old friends, I was a bit disappointed. I found the tone of this story to be harder, more grown up and overall very sad. This was actually an unrevised, unfinished, unedited draft manuscript that was found amongst her things after her death.

A lovely end to the little house series. This book is the least fanciful which makes sense as Laura grows and her life is now that of an adult with responsibilities of a family. It sums up the challenges and the optimism in a lovely way.

First book of 2018, and it‘s truly hard to fathom that this was reality only a little over 100 years ago. “The First Four Years” is written differently than the others in the Little House series (I think that‘s why it gets such bad reviews), but it paints a picture of real life in the late 1800‘s. I definitely appreciate this book, and the struggles that were shared in it. It just shows how far we have came. #firstof2018 #happynewyear

This book is truly the Go Set a Watchman of the #lhop series. It was discovered in her papers after her death and only published after the death of Rose. Completely unedited or revised, this book is more a collection of brief memories with little description or linking besides the characters. I would like to see what this would have become with edits and revisions; it is truly a disappointment as it is. Also: is Almanzo a compulsive shopper? 👇🏻

drbethandherkindle Before re-reading I would have classified this as the Cursed Child of #lhop, but changed my mind given the whole found after death thing. Tell me your analogies Littens! 7y
LauraBeth 😂😂 this made me laugh! 7y
Daisey According to some research, Rose did major revision of the other books, but this one is just as Laura wrote it, thus the difference. For more information I recommend 7y

drbethandherkindle @tpixie You definitely made the right choice! I sort of vaguely knew about Rose's edits, but reading Pioneer Girl really makes that clear 7y
MaureenMc I think your analogy re: Watchman is spot on! 7y
