Untitled | George R R Martin
The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO's Game of Thrones. With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros. Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart. What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys's three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed. With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Positives: GRRM displays his trademark genius with worldbuilding & lineages. Depth to consider the “author” perspectives through the story. The action was immaculate.

Negatives: I don‘t think I had to read all of that. I missed the depth of the characters as they are told in a detached way. People would arrive, be a big deal for 1/2 a chapter & disappear into obscurity or die. Maybe their grandson would come kill someone later. Too many Aegons.

5feet.of.fury Ok cat spies are cool because it reminded me of Arya, but I can‘t remember if there was any lore about the idea to enter the cat that ties back to this or if Larra could be a warg. 1w
5feet.of.fury Or if people are just jerks 1w

Parts of this were excellent, parts very very slow. Copious death and I think GRRM might actually hate pregnant women. Freud would have a field day with that. Overall I liked it. The style was different but not bad. #readingwesteros

This was such a rollercoaster. Def the most lighthearted chapter.

5feet.of.fury Baela‘s husband sails his epic voyage to the Sunset Sea. He uses more caution than previous Lu as he returns to the Stepstones. Scouts are sent ahead.

He has to fight or treat with Ryndoon. Ryndoon is quite the character & his men are very loyal.

Alyn doesn‘t want to risk losses fighting as he will need forces to defeat the Red Kraken (Dalton Greyjoy) so he talks.
2w
5feet.of.fury
Alyn is allowed to pass through Ryndoon‘s waters after a weird stay on Bloodstone & promise of 3 ships & a kiss from Lady Baela (should Ryndoon come to Driftmark)

Next he approached Dorne. Trade is amicable but storms cause losses & they are attacked by bandits.
2w
5feet.of.fury Old Town welcomes them, & provides 20 warships. Lord Redwyne is supposed to send 30 but they do not come timely and Alyn doesn‘t wait. More ships from Shield Island join them. However a storm comes: 1 ship sinks, 3 others damaged.

Meanwhile the Red Kraken has gathered his power. But on the eve of battle he is killed by his salt wife Tess. The forces against Alyn dissolve.
2w
See All 10 Comments
5feet.of.fury Even though he never faced his foe, he gets gifts of esteem from Johanna Lannister and celebration at Lannisport. Alyn wants to go home. He leaves Leo Costayne & 1/3 of the force to protect them.

Dorne allys with Tyrosh & Lys against Ryndoon. Drazenko Rogare approaches Alyn, the conversation is unknown but the next day Alyn raises the ships banners for Lys.
2w
5feet.of.fury Back at Kings Landing, Aegon III is in better spirits & spends more time in court. Unwin is humiliated & insufferable. Mad at the twins for wrecking his plans.

Baela has a girl: Laena, after her mother.

Word is sent that Alyn is off to Lys to secure a treasure beyond a price.

Peake has no idea what that means. It drives him mad.
2w
5feet.of.fury When Alyn does return he is greeted by Aegon III, Daenaera, Baela, their daughter & many other notables. The “treasure” is Viserys (the king‘s long lost brother, youngest son of Rhaenyra & Daemon, presumed dead since battle of the Gullet.
2w
5feet.of.fury Viserys had been held captive but well treated by Magister Bambarro. Upon Bambarro‘s death, creditors seized his manse, the princeling went to Lysander Rogare (patriarch of a banking dynasty) who married him to his daughter Lara of Lys.

Alyn agreed to terms of 100,000 golden dragons, agreed not to take up arms against house Rogare for 100 years AND entrust the crowns funds to the Rogare Bank of Lys
2w
5feet.of.fury Viserys (age 12) is 2 years younger than Aegon but more mature. His wife is 19. Aegon‘s disposition improves upon his brothers return, he had felt guilty for abandoning him at the Gullet. They become constant companions.

Unwin Peake is outraged about the terms of Viserys return but is overruled. He threatens to resign, & they call his bluff & dismiss him.
2w
BethM I felt so happy for Aegon! 1w
5feet.of.fury @BethM same! I don‘t think the kid got good news in his whole life. 1w

Pray, do not forget the elephant, my Lord. 🐘⚓️

5feet.of.fury Following the death of Tyland Lannister, Aegon III shows maturity beyond his years. He calls on Thaddeus Rowan to be Hand & Lord Alyn (husband of Baela) to be Admiral

Lord Peake however takes control of the council & makes his own appointments. Rowan is given a lessor sap ointment as Master of Laws. Hand was combined with Protector of the Realm & taken up by Unwin Peake himself
2w
5feet.of.fury Aegon III retreats back into silence taking little part in rule of the realm.

Unwin Peake essentially rules for 2 years. His goal is to restor House Peake to his former greatness.

Aegon III is sullen & does not like the changes made under Peake. Peake punishes him further by making Aegon‘s friend & cupbearer Gaemon Palehair a whipping boy. Any misbehavior of Aegon‘s will be taken out on Gaemon.
2w
5feet.of.fury
133 AC on the Feast Day of Our Father Above the Hand dokes our punishments to rapists, murderers, another “Shepherd Reborn”, a captain of a Pentoshi merchantman said to be responsible for bringing Winter Fever, & Former Grand Maester Orwyle (traitor & deserter of the Nights Watch). They are executed.

Aegon was present as duty required but took no part.
2w
See All 13 Comments
5feet.of.fury The narrow sea is again open to trading. But Pentoshi sellswords now hold the Stepstones & Braavosi warships hold the waters in between. Peake wants to establish a presence on Bloodstone to keep the waters open. He orders Lord of Tides Alyn Velaryon to put his fleets under command of Gedmund.
2w
5feet.of.fury Lord of Tides at first appears to do so but then takes his fleet & attack the Braavosi himself. He is victorious; he lost 3 ships while sinking 30, captured 6 galleys, 11 cogs & 89 hostages, food, drink & an elephant. 2w
5feet.of.fury Alyn Velaryon is at 1st welcomed as a hero, but the Hand is mad. He may have an elephant but they didn‘t take Bloodstone as intended. Racallio Ryndoon‘s pirate kingdom which Peake wished to diminish was in a stronger position w/Braavosi gone. & the Hand does not want war w/wealthy Braavos. 2w
5feet.of.fury Alyn is sent off to battle Greyjoys, outcomes are a win/win for Peake‘s motives. Baela tells him she is pregnant as he leaves on a taken Braavosi warship renamed Lady Baela.

Bribes are given & Braavos breaks ties with Ryndoon & cede the Stepstones. The royal treasury is depleted.

Winter Fever descends in the North. 3000 wildling cross the Wall, Cregan Stark rides to hunt them with other Northmen & nights Watch.
(edited) 2w
5feet.of.fury Young Queen Jaehaera - last surviving child of Aegon II - threw herself out a window in Maegor‘s holdfast at age 10. But some speculate she may have been pushed, as her mother Heleana died similarly & under suspicious conditions. Though there is no proof, there is plenty of motivation. Prominently that Baela‘s upcoming child would be in succession until Aegon III has an heir of his own. 2w
5feet.of.fury Promptly, Aegon is told he must wed again. To the Hand‘s daughter Myrielle.

Lords Rowan & Mooton have had it with Peake‘s overreach. He also gets strongly worded letters from Lady Arryn, Kermit Tully & Cregan Stark.
2w
5feet.of.fury Others put potential betrothals forward. In the end the decision will be made by Aegon III, a ball is planned & maidens to be brought for his choosing. Peake still keeps his plan for his daughter in motion with gossip & intervention.

On the day of the ball maidens are paraded before Aegon III as he sits on the Iron Throne. Dubbed “The Maiden‘s Day Cattle Show” by Mushroom.
2w
5feet.of.fury Aegon seems unimpressed. This bodes well for Peake‘s daughter as atleast Aegon has gotten to know her, & seems somewhat comfortable with her.

But Baela & Rhaena arrive ceremoniously with Lady Daenaera Velaryon (daughter of Daeron Velaryon & Hazel Hearte) who is chosen as Aegon III‘s queen. Peake has to concede, but at 6 years old she is no where near childbearing age for the heir they need.
2w
BethM Did she have to be 6?! I love the twins though, spunky. 2w
5feet.of.fury @BethM LOVE them! They did f up Peake‘s whole plan with that though! Leaving Baela‘s baby next in line (if it‘s a boy, I think, if it‘s not I have no idea haha) 2w

5feet.of.fury Cregan Stark doesn‘t know what to do with his host. Aly tells him the men may be wanted by widows in riverlands. A Wolf for Every Widow.

The kings coronation brings people from across the kingdom. Ser Willis Fell (sole survivor of Kingsguard from Viserys time) is made Lord Commander of White Swords. Tyland Lannister is made Hand, lord Leowyn Corbay is made Protector of the Realm. Corlys is on the council with 6 others.
2w
5feet.of.fury Tyland was so disfigured from the Queen‘s torturers he took to wearing a silken hood. As other regents convene less and less often, Tyland got more power.

Winter has descended & trade has collapsed.

They don‘t know what to do about Alicent. Her actions vengeful & unpredictable. Tyland imprisons her in Maegor‘s Holdfast.
2w
5feet.of.fury Dalton Greyjoy paid little heed to edicts coming from the Iron Throne. He continues raiding. Johanna Lannister attempts to oppose them, but he puts her ships to torch.

Tyrosh, Lys & Myrtle go to war.

131 AC comes to a close with the seas on fire east and west of the Seven Kingdoms while blizzards descend on Winterfell.

The king & queen are children of 11 & 8. Both have witnessed horrible tragedies. Both seem to have no joy.
2w

5feet.of.fury
Wildling descend of the Vale. Lady Jeyne Arryn leaves the council to defend her lands. As does Lord Caron when Dornishmen come towards Nightsong. Corlys Velaryon dies 132 AC. The council is shrinking.

Alyn Velaryon become Lord of Tides and Master of Driftmark, but is not granted Corlys‘s place on the regency council.
2w
5feet.of.fury The council, reminded of mortality, makes a plan for Aegon III‘s heir. The only successors the realm is likely to accept: Baela & Rhaena Targaryen. Munkun points out it should be a male successor -however all the other males are dead? Munkun says he will research…
2w
5feet.of.fury They decide they must marry off Baela who is wild & picks unsavory suitors. Thaddeus Rowan of Goldengrove gets that honor. If they have a son he will be a clear successor. Baela is not impressed. She runs away & Marty‘s Alyn Velaryon.

Tyland decides that‘s good enough. But the council doesn‘t see how their offspring would make a suitable heir.
2w
5feet.of.fury So then they need to get Rhaena wed. She chooses Leowyn Corbray‘s brother Corwyn.

Famine looms in the North. Wildlings come from beyond the Wall.
2w
5feet.of.fury Harrenhal is now claimed to be ruled by a witch with fearsome powers. It‘s Alys Rivers (former paramour of Aemond) who says her son is Aemond‘s son & heir, the rightful king of Westeros. The soldiers sent from KingsLanding are killed by Harrenhal‘s riders. 1/3 of the men live to tell the tale, including 1 prisoner who says he say Alys with a dragon. 2w
5feet.of.fury Tyland wants to deal with this “witch queen” but Winter Fever hits Kings Landing. The city is closed and the Red Keep barred. Many die, including Alicent.

Aegon III to everyone‘s astonishment visits & soothes the sick. Including Tyland Lannister before his passing.
2w
BethM Some good ends tied up with Alicent and Daemon‘s daughters, a bit ofd that they didn‘t move the king/queen story forward. I felt bad for Tyland by the end. I liked the last lines about how he plotted against them but served Rhaenyra‘s son faithfully. 2w
5feet.of.fury @BethM Tyland wasn‘t so bad. I agree he tried to be a good Hand to Aegon III. I hope we get more “witch queen” stuff 2w

“Winter is here & there are worse ways to die”

5feet.of.fury Aegon III aka Aegon the Unlucky, a monarch who said little and did less. He came to the throne 131 AC and ruled for 26 years. His reign began as a boy of 10.

The Lads: Kermit & Oscar Tully & Benjicot Blackwood - young leaders of the Riverlands- revel in their victory after the death of Aegon
2w
5feet.of.fury Cregan Stark arrives in Kings Landing but does not get the same reception as the Lads. Cregan wants to continue the war, destroy all that remained of those who put Aegon II in power. Storm‘s End, Old Town, Casterly Rock. Corlys tries to dissuade him.

Corlys is locked up. The Lads join their forces to Lord Stark, either for fame or being terrified by Cregan.
2w
5feet.of.fury KingsLanding is wary. A man claiming to be The Shepherd reborn rises. Alyn Velaryon demands Corlys be released. Cregan locks up Aegon III in Maegor‘s holdfast “for his own safety”

Answers to Corlys‘s peace offers arrive. Cretan‘s plans for war are undone by 3 widows.
2w

5feet.of.fury Cregan still wants to put Aegon II‘s poisoners to death. but in order to do that Aegon III must make him Hand (which he does). 22 are implicated for minor roles, as are the Club Foot & the Sea Snake.

He shows Mercy to Corlys for a bargain with Alysanne of House Blackwood (Black Aly). Stark likes the brazen, stubborn Black Aly. He asks for her maidenhead which she lost riding a horse at 13, so he asks for her hand in marriage instead
2w
5feet.of.fury
After the executions he resigns and heads back to Winterfell.

5feet.of.fury Aegon II proclaims that the true king is returning, but still has to make a dangerous journey from Dragonstone. Sunfyre doesn‘t recover, dies slowly. Lady Baela is almost put to death for it, Aegon II realizes this is in haste - he requests Baela‘s cousin Alyn of Hull pay homage or she will die. 3w
5feet.of.fury
Betrayals & betrothals follow. They need a way to bring the Sea Snake to their side. He is offered a full pardon if he bends the knee to Aegon II & deliver the swords and sails of Driftmark. But Corlys sets terms of his own: he wants pardons for all who fought for Rhaenyra, Aegon the Younger betrothed to Princess Jaehaera (and both proclaimed Aegon II‘s heirs) + Lady Baela freed.
3w
5feet.of.fury Alicent has to consent to the proposals as proxy for Aegon II.

Aegon II returns to King‘s Landing. He is in great pain, but sets to his duties. He is determined to exact vengeance on those who betrayed him at the surrounding keeps. The Lords must raise Aegon II‘s banners & provide suitable hostages

5feet.of.fury This does not sit right with Winterfell, barrowtown & White Harbor, Riverrun or the Vale. the Vale also houses Baela‘s twin Rhaena and her dragon (though still a hatchling) is a symbol of strength for the rebels. Aegon II decides he also needs a dragon.

7 dragon eggs are brought from Dragonstone but none yield a dragon.
3w
5feet.of.fury Sea Snake advocates for pardon & peace, Borros Baratheon for more fighting. Aegon II decides to marry Cassandra Baratheon to make more heirs & void the deal with Corlys. But they still need House Velaryon‘s support.

Plots & counterplots surround Aegon II but he is oblivious. In constant pain, unable to walk, he still plans his marriage while his enemies come from the North.
3w
5feet.of.fury Lord Borros leads the attack against the forces of Riverrun on the Kingsroad. King Aegon II‘s last army is shattered.

Corlys‘s warnings have proved true. Aegon threatens the Tully hostages, as well as Lady Baela. Baela is spirited away to safety by Larys the Clubfoot.

Aegon II heads to the Sept in a litter with a flagon of Arbor red. When they reach the Sept the king is dead.
3w
5feet.of.fury The poison & poisoner are unknown, but facts suggest Larys the Clubfoot.

Aegon II only reigned for 2 years. The war was over. Aegon the younger (son of Rhaenyra & Daemon) weds Princess Jaehaera (daughter of Halaena & Aegon II) the Dance of the Dragons ends & reign of Aegon III begins

5feet.of.fury With Addam Velaryon accused of treason Rhaenyra has lost a dragon rider, the Hand, & support forces of House Velaryon.

Heleana dies by apparent suicide, though some disagree, believing she was murdered by Rhaenyra. This leads to riots. The master of coin is tortured in the attack
City Watch comes for the Shepherd, but the flock strikes back leaving them slaughtered.

5feet.of.fury Rhaenyra also hears that Maidenpool has gone to the enemy & Nettles escaped. Her reign is in ruins.

Even Mushroom warns of the danger to the dragons. Rhaenyra dismisses this & doesn‘t notice when Joffrey sneaks off on her dragon Syrax.
3w
5feet.of.fury 7 men rode through the madness of the city to bring back Joffrey. Joff falls from Syrax before he reaches the dragon pit. His body is looted & 3 of The 7 die getting his remains.

The flock takes out 4 dragons. Syrax descended on them, and also killed. Rhaenyra loses both her son & dragon. KingsLanding is lost. The queens flight does not bring peace to KL. The flock brings their wrath to the wealthy.

Aegon II and the children have fled. Rhaenyra takes her seat on the Throne, which cuts her.

I‘m just taking Mushroom‘s version of event as gospel.

5feet.of.fury 2 claimants to the throne after death of Viserys I: his daughter Rhaenyra (only surviving child of 1st marriage) & Aegon (eldest son w/2nd wife). This would have The kingdom is split into 2, declaring for 1 side or the other. Taking a toll on Westeros & the dragon population. 1mo
5feet.of.fury Aegon at 1st refuses to be part of Alicent‘s plans. Wanting to leave Rhaenyra to her birthright. But the children of Rhaenyra with their questionable parentage will not be in the line of succession w/out all other Targaryens dead. So he is convinced.

Aegon is quickly crowned at the Dragonpit. Rhaenyra is so upset she goes into labor early. He only daughter comes stillborn & deformed, she blames Aegon & the others.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Vassals come, as does Princess Rhaenys & the Seasnake. She has the wealth of House Velaryon & more dragons than Aegon. But will this leave her a city to rule in or burn it to the ground? Daemon agrees. He plans to goad Aegon into an attack. Rhaenyra has her own coronation. 1mo

5feet.of.fury After Aemon‘s death, Baelon is named the heir, but Aemon had a child Rhaenys who was with child. By granting Dragonstone to Baelon Jaehaerys was skipping both Rhaenys & possibly her unborn son.

Baelon was well established and better suited to rule, he also had 2 healthy sons. But this angers Boremund & Jocelyn Baratheon, Rhaenys & good queen Alysanne.
1mo
5feet.of.fury In 101AC Baelon dies of a burst belly, now there is no clear successor. Baelon‘s sons Viserys & Daemon would have been obvious had Baelon sat on the Iron Throne. Rhaenys & her daughter also make their claim, & Rhaenys‘s son Laenor. Jaehaerys still had a son Vaegon (frail & bookish & an Archmaester) 1mo
5feet.of.fury council is held at Harrenhal. 14 claims are examined. The 2 claims with most support were Baelon‘s eldest so Viserys & Laenor Velaryon son of Rhaenys & grandson of Aemon.

Jaehaerys passes in 103AC. His grandson Viserys succeeds him.

King Viserys I & Queen Aemma host many feats and tourneys with their young daughter Rhaenyra.

5feet.of.fury T he King‘s hot tempered brother Daemon feels he is the rightful heir & should be named Prince of Dragonstone.

Ser Otto, Hand of the King, writes to Viserys & says Daemon ascending the throne would be a second Maegor the Cruel, but such was the precedent set by the council of 101.
1mo
5feet.of.fury In 105AC Aemma is pregnant with a son, but they both pass in childbirth. Daemon reportedly jokes that the child was heir for a day. The last straw for Viserys. He declares Rhaenyra his heir, naming her Princess of Dragonstone!in a lavish ceremony.

Daemon quits City Watch & impregnates his concubine Mysaria & presents her with a dragon egg. Viserys objects, the dragon egg is returned. Mysaria loses the child. Daemon‘s disdain for Viserys grows.

The realm hopes Viserys will remarry and have a son. He is encouraged to marry Lady Laena (daughter of Rhaenys & Corlys). She‘s 12. He instead weds Alicent Hightower, daughter of the King‘s Hand. The Hightowers were a noble family of impeccable lineage.

Daemon -and Corlys the sea snake are pissed. They go wage war on the Stepstones.

More Targaryen princelings are born. Viserys defies the council & keeps Rhaenyra as heir.
1mo
5feet.of.fury 111AC Daemon returns to court. After an imposing entrance he kneels before Viserys. He resumes his seat on small council. Some say he seduced Rhaenyra. He is exiled. He goes back to war in the Stepstones. 1mo
5feet.of.fury
At 16 Rhaenyra takes possession of Dragonstone. Viserys talks of marrying her to a Dornish prince to bring Dorne into the realm. But she is encouraged to marry her cousin Laenor (who prefers the company of squires). Rhaenyra hates the idea but Viserys says he will make her half brother Aegon the heir. She & Laenor marry in 114 AC. They have a child that looks nothing like Laenor named Jacaerys.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Daemon has various schemes for power. He weds Lady Laena Velaryon. They have twin daughters Baela & Rhaena this birth reconciles Daemon & Viserys.

Queen Alicent & princess Rhaenyra died, as do their children

Rhaenyra is there when Laena gives birth to a son. The baby is malformed and dies within the hour. Laena passes. Rhaenyra comforts Daemon in his grief. Then Laenor is slain.

5feet.of.fury The disputes between Rhaenyra & Alicent children grow with Aemond losing an eye. The bloody seed of the Dance of the Dragons have been planted.

127AC Viserys health wanes, he is cut by the throne. 1 eyed Aemond toasts his brown haired nephews. Viserys does in 129AC

Alysanne was pregnant every other paragraph.
The PlentyOfTargaryens matchmaking doesn‘t go so well.

“Lady Westhill” survives a perilous storm. The ships come upon 3 small islands. They discover spice & pink fruits they have never encountered. But Alys wants to continue. She takes Sun Chaser West for lands beyond the sea, was never seen again. Many years later Coralys Velaryon makes the same trip west in Sea Snake & may have seen her ship in Asshai.

5feet.of.fury Winter comes, killing crops & bringing sickness. The Tullys, Lyman Lannister & some other lords are consumed. Old Town is especially hard hit. The smallfolk sick or starving attack the master of coin. Jaehaerys goes with the Kingsguard to collect his body. He hangs the offenders from the walls of the Red Keep.

New Years comes without celebration. Young Daenerys is afflicted by the shivers & dies. This flies in the face of Targaryen exceptionalism
1mo
5feet.of.fury Alysanne is pregnant again and returns to Dragonstone. She delivers her 5th child, Alyssa (after her mother) later that year. At first she reminds her of Daenerys, but as she grows she doesn‘t have her beauty or the Targaryen look. She was a tomboy. 1mo

72AC Alaric Stark passes, succeeded by his grandson Edric.

73AC Alysanne has 11th child Gaemon, who passes before 3 months. Rhaena also does that year.

Ser Lucamore had wed in secret (3 times) despite his vows to the Kingsguard.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Their matchmaking for the younger siblings doesn‘t do so well. Daella is afraid of everything & wont marry at a weirwood, they are desperate as she wouldn‘t be able to join the Faith with her poor reading. In the end she picks Rodrik Arryn, 20 years her elder, but gentle & kind. She does well with his younger children & is treated kindly at the Eyrie.
1mo
5feet.of.fury 81AC Aemon, heir apparent, takes on the role of master of laws. Baelon & Princess Alyssa, they have a second son called Daemon.

Daella is also with child, she panics, but births Aemma Arryn & dies shortly after. Alysanne blames Rodrik, the maesters in the Eyrie but most of all Jaehaerys.

83 AC Prince Morion of Dorne plans an attack. “The 4th Dornish War” lasts only a day with the King easily burning out the fleet.
1mo
5feet.of.fury 84AC Alyssa births her & Baelon‘s 3rd son Aegon. She never recovers & dies within the year. Aegon passes before his 1st name day.

Saera meanwhile has cause a lot of trouble & decides the rules aren‘t for her. She wants to marry whomever & however many. 1 of her men faces Jaehaerys in trial by combat & dies. Saera joins the silent sisters. Escapes after a year and a half & heads to Lysene pleasure gardens.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Viserra wants to marry Baelon but Lord Manderly will make an alliance with the North they need. After a wild night of rebelling she falls from horse & breaks her neck. In 5 years Alysanne lost 3 of her daughters. She wants Saera home. Jaehaerys refuses, the rift again opens between them.

90AC Jaehaerys & Alysanne have one of their last good memories as grandchild Rhaenys Marries Corlys Velaryon.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Aemon dies in the Myrish Bloodbath. Baelon exacts vengeance. Baelon‘s son Viserys enters the Dragonpit & claims Balerion, but Balerion is old, he passes in less than a year. The last living creature who saw Valyria in all its glory.
1mo
5feet.of.fury The last years of Alysanne‘s life are filled with saddness. She gives the New Gift a strip of land below Brandon‘s Gift to the Night‘s Watch.

Again a tourney. Reunions & reconciliation. But winter is coming.

Not an uplifting chapter for a pregnant lady 😅
I‘m having an idea about where those eggs might end up some day 🪺🐉

5feet.of.fury Jae thinks it‘s important for the realm to see their king, throughout his rule he would travel often. This trip to Maidenpool he took with pregnant Alysanne.
The holy sisters stopped her from bathing in the famed pool fearing the water would be polluted forever if she was allowed to bathe with the abomination in her belly. Her ladies in waiting protect her from their attack.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Jae calls on Jonquil Darke (she should have won the tourney for Kingsguard where she competed as a mystery knight)
Queen Alyssa becomes pregnant at 44, Rogar redevotes himself to her & their son Boremund is born healthy. Alysanne names her some Aegon (after both the Conqueror & her fallen brother) he dies 3 days after birth. She blames not being allowed in the healing waters of Maidenpool.
1mo
5feet.of.fury Rhaena has established her own small court at Dragonstone. Her daughter Aerea misses her life in KingsLanding. But she is gifted a dragon hatchling.

Jaehaerys rebuilds the city & rewrites widows laws & soon after Alysanne falls pregnant again.

Meanwhile Darmon Velaryon‘s eldest son has a boy named Corlys after his great great uncle who served in 1st Kingsguard. (Someday he will be known as the Sea Snake)

5feet.of.fury Alysanne births a daughter Daenerys.

Aerea is no longer heir to the Iron Throne.

Septon Oswyck passes. Queen Alyssa is pregnant again at 46. Elissa Farman leaves Rhaena (and 3 dragon eggs go missing). A new Septon is chosen.

Alyssa‘s situation becomes dire- there is no path to saving her but they are able to save her baby, a daughter named Jocelyn. Rhaena came to late to make amends. She curses Rogar.
1mo
5feet.of.fury
More problems on Dragonstone, Rhaena‘s marriage fails, her daughter acts out & sickness breaks out. The Master of Coin thinks it is poison (tears of Lys) eventually her husband admits to the poisonings. He jumps to his death.

Jaehaerys hosts a tourney which Rhaena crashes hoping to find Aerea who has blown off on ancient dragon Balerion.

5feet.of.fury Alyssa sits in KingsLanding as Queen Regent.
On Dragonstone Alysanne is queen after secretly marrying Jaehaerys.
Rhaena, still on Fair Isle is called “Queen in the West” by many.
(There was also Queen Elinor relegated to the footnotes)

Alyssa & Rogar still hoping Jae & Alysanne will repent their marriage &get annulled, as the marriage is yet unconsummated. This hope was in vain.

5feet.of.fury
But the young king‘s time away from court leads to other rumors, is he ill? Prisoner?

Jaehaerys trains at arms to make up for his father Aenys‘s shortcomings as a ruler. Alysanne does her religious instruction. (Alyssa hopes this would set them straight on the abomination of their marriage)

5feet.of.fury When Lord Marq passes his son Franklyn becomes Lord of Fair Isle &casts out his younger brother, Rhaena, their children &friends. Elissa leaves as well & they sail for Lannisport. Lannisters ask for dragon eggs as a show of gratitude for hospitality. With dragon riders of their own Lannisters could be equal to Targaryens. Rhaena knows they must go elsewhere. 1mo

Really wishing I made a family tree already 😅

5feet.of.fury
Rhaena we‘d Androw Farman, second son of Lord of Fair Isle. Queen Alyssa was upset not to be invited, Rogar Baratheon the Hand was upset to lose a potential alliance.

Jaehaerys was busy selecting councilors.

Queen Alyssa and Rogar Baratheon we‘d in sea spendid ceremony with a tourney &7days of feasting. It was well attended by celebrators &those wishing to ally themselves or to get a look at the boy king.
(edited) 1mo
5feet.of.fury Rhaena did not attend. Alysanne, the hound princess acted as host.

There was a competition to serve in the Kingsguard. Competitors included a slender mystery knight, Jonquil Darke the bastard daughter of the Lord of Duskendale. (Who did not make kingsguard)
1mo
5feet.of.fury Queen Regent Alyssa & Rogar now turned their attention to finding a match for Jaehaerys. Rhaena‘s children being heirs (&her potantially acting as Regent) concerned them, because of discord between the 2 &rumors she was a sorceress.
1mo
See All 8 Comments
5feet.of.fury Plans are abandoned to wed Jaehaerys to his sister Alysanne so as not to upset the Faith. So they will also find a suitor for her. When she is betrothed to Rogar‘s brother, 10 years her senior, she goes to Jaehaerys. The siblings elope, but do not consummate the marriage. 1mo
5feet.of.fury
Septon Matteus curses their abomination. Rogar decides it doesn‘t count without the bedding. He moves to separate the newlyweds but the Kingsguard interfere. Queen Alyssa doesn‘t want bloodshed & says what‘s done is done. The king & young bride remain on Dragonstone until Jaehaerys is of age. The union remained a secret to much of Westeros.

Roary47 I wish there was not as much incest and baby newlyweds. 🤢 1mo

5feet.of.fury
Jaehaerys I ascended the Iron Throne in 48 AC at the age of 14. He would rule the next 55 years.

Queen Rhaena -whose twins Rhaella & Aerea should have been next in line of succession agreed Jaehaerys should have the crown. Rhaena herself was considered but sexism prevailed.
1mo
5feet.of.fury
Queen Alyssa served as his regent for a time, they filled the dungeons to bursting with Maegor‘s supporters. Rogar Baratheon Hand of the King, asked to limit the executions to Maegor‘s men to avoid war with would be loayalists. Jaehaerys said he would not begin his reign bathed in blood. Most were spared.

Those responsible for Viserys‘s torture &the Kingsguard (those who didn‘t take the black) were killed.
1mo
5feet.of.fury High Septon Moon famous for his strange, debauchery filled sermons was no fan of the Targaryens. After Maegor‘s conflict with the faith it was important Jaehaerys be anointed. As they plotted how to handle this, Moon had a woman to his tent &emerged with his throat slit ..and his wine poisoned.

Some believed that she was sent by The Hand or Queen Regent, or was a Faceless Man. But the Faceless Men have more control.

5feet.of.fury
He was anointed but Jaehaerys refused to reinstate swords to the Faith. He returned to King‘s Landing, Rhaella stayed at the Sept, Rhaena departed for Fair Aisle but her daughter Aerea joined him. The twins seemed to change personalities, it‘s widely believed they switched places
1mo
5feet.of.fury More mysteries: Who killed Moon? Why the twin switcharoo? 1mo
BethM Pretty smart for a young kid. Then Cersei undoes it all 😂 I think mom switched the twins so they could be happy. Septon death I have no insight. 1mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM it seemed like they were placing Rhaella as Aerea as another potential heir but then Jaehaerys rules for so long… But def agree it was in the girls best interest in general 1mo

GRRM what is with these names you absolute madman.

5feet.of.fury Rhaenys &Visenya each gave a son to the king. Aenys (son with Rhaenys- the worst combo name I have encountered) was born in 7AC small &sickly. He was given a dragon names Quicksilver &thrived.
Maegor (so with Visenya) was born in 12AC. The prince took well to swordplay.
The sons of the Dragon had no sisters to marry to keep the Targaryen custom of keeping the bloodline pure.
2mo
5feet.of.fury Aenys married Lady Alyssa Velaryon who shared his silvery hair &violet eyes. They had a daughter, Rhaena & then a son ,Aegon. Then several other children Viserys, Jaehaerys &Alysanne.

Maegor fell further down line of succession & did not take to dragon riding as his brother & nieces & nephews did
(edited) 2mo
5feet.of.fury After Aegon I‘s death Aenys vows to rule together with Maegor. Even as Aenys was anointed by the High Septon, there were whispers that it should be Maegor on the Iron Throne.

The Lords rise up against the Throne. At a siege at the Eyrie, Maegor arrives riding Balerion, having claimed the greatest dragon of all.
2mo
See All 20 Comments
5feet.of.fury Maegor, still with no heirs, declares his wife barren &takes a second wife. He joins Alys Harroway in a Valyrian rite. The Realm is outraged. Maegor insists that the rules of the Faith do not apply to the blood of the dragon. Aenys exiles him. He goes to Pentos with Alys &Balerion. 2mo
5feet.of.fury In 41AC Aenys announced his intention to marry his daughter Rhaena to her brother Aegon. The Faith now condemned this practice. By end of year much of the realm was in full rebellion. Aenys was sick with stress &indecision. He improved for a time but collapsed as Rhaena &Aegon were threatened. Visenya cared for him, he improved somewhat then He died. 2mo
5feet.of.fury Visenya joins Maegor &they return on dragons. Maegor claims the crown defying the laws of inheritance. He barely survived those who opposed him. 28 days later Alys comes with Tyanna of the Tower and 600 sell swords. After burning his enemies, Maegor takes his 3rd wife Tyanna. Aenys‘s widow &young children are forced to witness.

Meanwhile Rhaena is pregnant at Casterly Rock. &births twins Aerea &Rhaella.
2mo
5feet.of.fury Maegor demands hostages from the noble houses &the High Septon for treason. He & his mother attack all that oppose them. The dragons come to Oldtown. But the High Septon has died suddenly. Was he struck down for his pride or murdered? Some blame Visenya‘s dark arts. The new Septon, 90, blind & feeble happily anoints Maegor.
2mo
5feet.of.fury In 43AC his nephew Aegon the Uncrowned come to King‘s Landing, not for the Throne but for Rhaena‘s dragon Dreamfyre &Aenys‘s Quicksilver. Successful, they go to build an army.

For the 1st time since Doom of Valyria dragon contended with dragon. Aegon dies. Rhaena, who did not join the fight, flees with her children.
2mo
5feet.of.fury Maegor is victorious, he still has 3 wives and no children. Alys falls pregnant but suffers a stillbirth, the fetus deformed. Maegor executes the maester, midwives. Tyanna later says that the son was not his, that other men had come to Alta‘s bed, &gives a list of 20. More people are executed including Alys. 2mo
5feet.of.fury In 45 AC the Red Keep‘s construction is finished. All the builders are executed. 46 AC Maegor still has no heir &he decides the solution is a 4th, 5th & 6th wife. He seeks out Rhaena.

Rhaena‘s twins are hidden from even herself. But she does not part with her dragon. When summoned She meets her fellow brides.

Pregnancies follow, but they end in horror. Some say Maegor is cursed, but Maegor blames (among others) Tyanna.
2mo
5feet.of.fury
In 48 AC Lord Rogar Baratheon proclaims Jaehaerys Targaryen the true king, young Jae vows to end the reign of his usurping uncle. Supported by Alysanne, Rhaena & all 3 on dragons. Redwyes, Lannisters, Arryns all rise up as well. Maegor makes his battle plans until late into the night, the next morning he is dead on the Iron Throne. Guards swear no one entered but The Red Keep has it‘s secrets. This ended the reign of Maegor the Cruel.
2mo
BethM That was a ride for sure! My brain keeps connecting all the names to future Westeros. Samwell Tarly made me laugh. 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM this was a whole journey itself 😂 his predecessor should have been Sam the Slayer, missed opportunity for more history repeating. 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM I have so many questions that I don‘t know if get answered 😂 we got the bit about Visenya (probably a Kingslayer and kinslayer) but who killed the High Septon? (Really could have been anyone ) Who killed Maegor? (Doesn‘t strike me as a suicide, or the Throne becoming animate) 2mo
BethM We never really get an answer about Visenya either. High septon I‘m going with the one guy who was pardoned and then later killed by the faith. There were whole paragraphs that were just names 😂 2mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM oh man, a few times I was just looking for people I knew (or their great great great great great grandfathers) 2mo

Governance Under King Aegon I

As the Iron Throne cooled it became a seat of justice for all of Westeros.

5feet.of.fury The Targaryens brokered many marriages between noble houses. Aegon was the final authority but Visenya &Rhaenys remained his partners in power throughout his Reign.

Arguments between the great houses of the realm were adjudicated by the Crown. King Aegon decreed “any lord who goes to war without my leave shall be considered an enemy and rebel of the iron throne.
2mo
5feet.of.fury
No one planned King‘s Landing. It simply grew. By 25 AC it was the third most populous city in the realm.
2mo
5feet.of.fury
Visenya was the oldest of the 3 heads of the dragon &o it lived both her siblings, when she could no longer wield a sword she dabbled in the dark arts. Many kings had champions to defend them, as Aegon was ruler of 7 kingdoms she decided he should have 7. They were diverse, dark or fair, hedge knight or bastard born; all skilled. Thus the Kingsguard was formed.

5feet.of.fury Probably my favorite part of this bit - Lord Orys the first Hand returning from Dornish War without a hand “The King‘s Hand should have a hand” just like Jaime! 2mo
Bklover You can remove me from the list- thought I could do one more, but I‘m having trouble with it. Thank you so much!!! 2mo
BethM @5feet.of.fury I like that part too! Also the throwaway sentence that sh may have been a kinslayer and a kingslayer. Like what?! You can‘t just drop that and keep going. 2mo

5feet.of.fury @BethM luckily we don‘t have to wait too long. ⚔️ 2mo
Roary47 I also liked the part about the Hand. Then the Kings guard. How his sister helped set it up because the guards are too slow! 2mo

“The rule of Aegon I was by and large a peaceful one.”
(Except when it wasn‘t).

5feet.of.fury After submission of the Three Sisters & Iron Islands (who then chose Vickon Greyjoy as lord paramount), all of Westeros South of the Wall was ruled by Aegon except Dorne.
During the 1st Dornish War the are hampered by the sun, but when they reach Sumspear the nobles have deserted &Aegon declares victory
2mo
5feet.of.fury Once he departs, Dorne recaptured their lands. The War would drag on another 7 years.
Rhaenys & Meraxes returned to battle in Hellholt, Meraxes is killed by a spear to the eye, causing destruction as she died, Rhaenys‘s cause of death is unknown but she perished there in Hellholt in 10AC.
Dorne was a smoking desert but House Martell remained true to their words “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”.
2mo
5feet.of.fury Ultimately the war ended with a mysterious letter in 13AC. 2mo

majkia This is so different in form from his other Westeros books. 2mo
5feet.of.fury @majkia yeah it is. I was forewarned that it‘s essentially a History book. And events being reflected back on, so the perspective is limited or skewed based on where or how the information was given and the “writer”. It‘s taking me some time to wrap my brain around what is happening, what bits are important etc, but I‘m intrigued because GRRMs strong suit has been the world building &lineages (as opposed to driving the plot). Very different though 2mo
BethM I‘m liking the narrative style so far. I want to know what‘s in the letter. 2mo
Roary47 I hope they eventually tell us what is said in the letter. 2mo
Sargar114 @BethM me too! On both counts! I‘m loving the mystery of the letter! 4w

So… this format is much different which my coworker tried to prepare me for.. I was still not ready for it

5feet.of.fury Lord Aegon I proclaims that there will be one King of Westeros - those who bent the knee to House Targaryen would keep their lands &titles, the rest would be humbled.
He was crowned by his sisters (&wives) Visenya &Rhaenys to applause. Aegon‘s enemies had no answer for his dragons. Harrenhal is burned, Storm‘s End surrenders. HighGarden &Loren Lannister team up but are met with death. Aegon, riding on Balerion, bathed them in flame.
2mo
5feet.of.fury Torrhen Stark leads, many think northern valor will win out, but in the end he is remembered as the King Who Knelt.
Dorne refuses to kneel even if it brings death, they did not submit for another century.
The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros were hammered into one great realm. Aegon held court from the great metal seat made from the melted blades of his foes: the Iron Throne.
2mo
BethM I didn‘t mind the history lesson and over two days was much easier to take it than in one sitting. Interesting as this still predates House of the Dragon season one. 2mo
See All 9 Comments
5feet.of.fury @BethM I liked the origin of the Iron Throne, very stylish ending to the chapter. I haven‘t had a chance to watch House of the Dragon yet, so I‘m totally out of my element. The next couple chapters are short and def did not NEED 2 days, but some chapters are 60 pages & I was concerned. I think it will continue as a history book and not POVs 2mo
Sargar114 I was surprised how much I enjoyed the history. I also enjoyed the pictures 😂 2mo
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 GRRM has always done amazing with the worldbuilding & lineages, it‘s been interesting trying to adapt my brain to the non-POV format but… I‘m optimistic 2mo
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 I‘m also hoping some of these long chapters have a lot of pictures 🤞 2mo

This is a history book written in-world by one of the archmaesters of the Citadel in Westeros. It covers nearly the first 150 years of Targaryen rule, summarizing the life and reign of each king and their families, starting with Aegon‘s Conquest and ending with the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

With many ambiguous elements around what might‘ve happened behind closed doors, this book is truly enthralling for fans of Westerosi lore.
