Packing My Library
Packing My Library: An Elegy and Ten Digressions | Alberto Manguel
40 posts | 20 read | 39 to read
A best-selling author and world-renowned bibliophile meditates on his vast personal library and champions the vital role of all libraries In June 2015 Alberto Manguel prepared to leave his centuries-old village home in France's Loire Valley and reestablish himself in a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Packing up his enormous, 35,000?volume personal library, choosing which books to keep, store, or cast out, Manguel found himself in deep reverie on the nature of relationships between books and readers, books and collectors, order and disorder, memory and reading. In this poignant and personal reevaluation of his life as a reader, the author illuminates the highly personal art of reading and affirms the vital role of public libraries. Manguel's musings range widely, from delightful reflections on the idiosyncrasies of book lovers to deeper analyses of historic and catastrophic book events, including the burning of ancient Alexandria's library and contemporary library lootings at the hands of ISIS. With insight and passion, the author underscores the universal centrality of books and their unique importance to a democratic, civilized, and engaged society.

#LastFirst @BookNAround
The last book I finished this year was appropriately enough, about an author musing on packing his collection of books and all the various fresh beginnings he has had in his life.Lovely and compelling.
The first book I will start will be a biography of Isabella La Catolica.
Happy new year!!

BookNAround Both look great! 2y

Who wants to come over and pack ALL of these for me? Anyone? ANYONE? The movers are going to curse me.

PurpleyPumpkin ? Thé last time we moved, I had so many boxes of books that one of the movers asked my hubby if I was in publishing. I don‘t think he understood the concept of tsundoku. If we ever move again, I think we‘ll need one truck just for books. Good luck with your move!? 3y
MicheleinPhilly @PurpleyPumpkin HA! They‘re definitely going to hate me. Thank you! 3y
squirrelbrain 🙋🏻‍♀️I will, if you let me unpack them all too in your new place. Then I can sort them all alphabetically…my idea of bliss! 3y

MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain I‘ll book you a plane ticket! 3y
Cathythoughts Good luck with it all 👍🏻❤️ 3y
Soubhiville I would if I were close and I could also snuggle Pickles! I actually find books to be the easiest to pack and love the unpacking and reorganizing process like @squirrelbrain . 3y
Simona Good luck with packing and moving🤞 I hate both … 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Soubhiville The bookshop owner said she would come over and help if she could snuggle with Pickles too. 😂 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Cathythoughts @Simona Thank you! It‘s all so stressful. 3y
Sarahreadstoomuch Good luck!! 3y
Tamra If you are like me, it takes forever because I have to stop & ponder titles. 😂 Wishing you a speedy and smooth move! 3y
Liz_M I agree, book packing is the easiest part! My first move for which I hired movers, they came and looked at my stack of stuff that could fit in a 5x5 storage room and were like "that's it?" Then they discovered that over half of the boxes contained books.... 3y
Jas16 If I didn‘t live on the other side of the country I would just for the fun of going through someone else‘s bookshelves. But I understand- that is why I will likely never move. 3y
KristiAhlers All the books! ❤️ I hate moving. Former military wife and when he retired I started keeping my books! But I don‘t have near as much happiness as you do! Hope your move goes smoothly. I must say I have the moving and unpacking thing down to a fine science I guess I should after 15. Gah that‘s a stupid number. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @KristiAhlers 15???? Oh my gosh, I would spontaneously combust from the anxiety. I mean, I moved a bunch in my 20s but was always renting so the accumulation of “stuff” was somewhat under control. 3y
KristiAhlers @MicheleinPhilly yeah I‘ve lived all over the place to include England and Belgium! Have military will travel. I mean it‘s been great. I‘ve had a bunch of amazing experiences and seen so much of the world. I have been in all of the lower 48 and Hawaii just need Alaska and I‘ll have been in all the states! 3y
TrishB I‘ll make the tea whilst Helen @squirrelbrain does the cataloging! 3y
MicheleinPhilly @KristiAhlers That‘s amazing! I‘ve done 2 “big” moves - Philly to Los Angeles and the reverse but I was younger and much more resilient. 😂 3y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB That is an EXCELLENT plan. 3y
squirrelbrain #litsymeetup at Michele‘s new house?! @TrishB @Soubhiville 🫖 📚 🍸 🍷 3y
LeahBergen I prefer the unpacking and organizing of books. 😆 Good luck, my friend! 😘 3y
MicheleinPhilly @LeahBergen Well you can come and handle that part with Helen. 😘 3y
TrishB It‘s a plan ♥️ 3y
Ruthiella That‘s a lot of books! Good luck! 3y
marleed Beautiful display of gorgeousness - congrats on your collection! 3y
CarolynM The last time we moved the removalists were horrified by the number of boxes of books. I reckon we've got twice as many now! Good luck with the packing and the move. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @CarolynM I‘m afraid to call them for a quote. In addition to the sheer number, they‘ll have to carry them up an extra flight of stairs in the new house. 😬 3y
DivineDiana Your collection is a thing of beauty, but you‘re right, the movers will think differently. 🤞🏻Best wishes! ❤️ (edited) 3y
Amiable My husband still mutters under his breath about the 27 boxes of books I packed up for our move a few years ago. And that was after I culled the shelves because we were supposedly downsizing. 😬 Hope your move goes (went?) well! 3y
Nute What a vision of loveliness!🤩 I would have helped, but we never would have gotten through it due to stopping to read instead.😆 Hope that things went well. Now it is a relocating-survivor‘s story!😁 3y

“The imaginary reality of books contaminates every aspect of our life.” So true! How often do you find your mind drifting to the characters in a book while going about your day? Their imaginary reality really does stick with you even when you‘re not actively reading. An insightful and thoughtful read about moving a personal library of 35,000 volumes from France to Manhattan.

I love how instead of loaning out a book from his personal library, Manguel buys a new copy to hand out if he wants someone to read the book.

This is by far as his most personal book, recounting how in 2014, he had to move away from France. They packed his beloved 35000+ books to store them in Montréal. In reflecting on what libraries mean to people, what they mean to him, he explores what it is that rooms full of books do to us readers. ⬇️

tournevis ➡️More emotional and personal than The Library at Night, but also oddly redundant. For the first time ever, I recognized entire passages and thoughts from previous books. Still, a strong recommendation for all #littens.⬇️ 6y
tournevis ➡️ Incidently, the book just came out in French and he was in Québec promoting it last week, as well as negotiating with the Province and with Quebec City to try and donate his library. Apparently, Ontario flatly refused 6y

Almost seven months ago, my husband and I moved from Illinois to start new jobs and settle down in Washington state.

Now we're doing it all over again except this time... we're moving out of our apartment and into our OWN HOME!!!! 😃🏡😍

In the wise words of Mr. Kate (of book and YouTube fame), OMG We Bought a House!

Let the book packing commence!

Hooked_on_books Congrats! What an exciting move! 6y
ReadingVampire Omg congratulations!!! So I have many questions because this is exactly what my husband and I want to do in two years. We are trying to move from Miami FL to Washington State! 1.How did you move across the country we were thinking about a pod? Then driving our cars with pets there. 2.Did you have the job before going? 3.Did you visit before moving? 4.Homeless problem is what‘s scaring me from that state, I‘m sure I‘m blowing it out of proportion? 6y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - Thank you so much, Holly! 😃 You're always so kind 💜 It definitely is an exciting move and a bit of an adult-affirming one! Like holy cow, we're grown ups and are gonna owe SO much money for the next 20+ years! But we know it's a worthy investment and we're greatly looking forward to having our own place that's ours (and the bank's... but I'm glad they're willing to share it - lol!) 6y

Librariana Hello, @Puredragonstar! 🤗 So this may have to be a multiple part answer, but here we go! 1. How did we move? My husband was retiring from the military, so we were tremendously fortunate that that was arranged for us. It was good old fashioned packers and a humongous moving truck! I think a POD is not a bad idea at all!! 6y
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 2. Yes, I did secure a job before moving. That's all actually documented here on Litsy - lol! 😁😊 I interviewed for my old library system and they were very willing to do a Skype interview. My husband secured his job once we got here. 6y
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 3. We actually used to live in the area (for over 6 years!) before getting orders to IL, so it made the decision really easy to want to come back (plus, we had persistent friends who wanted us to retire here - lol!) 6y
Christine Congrats!! (My husband is military too, 6y
JoScho Yay!!! 6y
Librariana @Puredragonstar - 4. I think it's easy for all of us to worry, but I try to have faith in the local agencies who work tirelessly to provide assistance to our homeless population. We've actually received training on how to best serve this group at our libraries and I hope you'll consider the many positive attributes this state has to offer 😊 (which I'm sure you have if you and your hubby want to move here!) Washington welcomes you! 🌲💙 6y
ReadingVampire I was stationed there before (I was in the Navy) but the horror stories of thousands of needles and people breaking in make me nervous especially with such a beautiful place. So I‘m sure it‘s just negative news that I follow. I really want to move back and I thank you for the information! Good luck with the move! 6y

“If every library is autobiographical, its packing up seems to have something of a self obituary.”

I enjoyed these fragmentary musings about books and reading so much that I listened twice to the #audiobook performed by James Cameron Stewart. It‘s only about 4 hours long.

In literature, dreams often serve to bring the impossible into the fabric of everyday life, like mist through a crack in the wall. Unfortunately, it often happens that dreams are brought in as an alibi for the unbelievable plot.

Lindy @Gezemice True, sometimes. But as Manguel points out in a different passage, they have been used in literature as far back as Gilgamesh. 6y
Gezemice @Lindy At Gilgamesh‘s time, dreams were taken very seriously, so that makes sense. In contemporary literature, not so much... 6y

It was slow going on foot through today‘s heavy snowfall, but my neighbour let me know that our local bakery is offering a 25% discount because of the weather, so off I went, listening to a new audiobook. Friday is the only day they make sourdough rye at this bakery. It was worth the trek!

Lindy @Lcsmcat @DivineDiana I curled for 12 years with the same team, then took a break for 2 years because our skip didn‘t want to continue. The same skip contacted me this year about an afternoon league, which suits me perfectly now that I‘m retired. The teams take turns bringing treats for after our games, to have with tea instead of beer. It‘s a fun league. 🥌 6y
Lindy @saresmoore Our first heavy snow was in September, then it melted, then we had another dump in October, then that melted. Yesterday my neighbours mowed their lawn because we knew this was coming. It‘s a winter city. 6y

Wonderful book of musings that Manguel shares as he discusses what it was like packing his library of over 35,000 volumes. As for each of us, some books have a profound affect on us and Manguel tends to return to those examples like Alice in Wonderland and Don Quixote in several of his own books. I read this in May so I can‘t remember all the anecdotes that made me love this book, but it spoke to me. I felt akin to his words and I love this book.

Alberto Manguel needed to move from France where he housed a 35,000-volume personal library to a one-bedroom apartment in New York City. As he processes and purges, he reflects on the nature and importance of reading, libraries, and literature. A beautifully written and thoughtful book that will make librarians and readers cheer. Highly recommended.

About the function of (national) libraries, words and reader‘s expectations, more than about the actual packing of Manguel‘s library. Interesting as always: a lot of Borges, Dante, Carroll, the Bible, the library of Alexandria - though in the end you do wish there‘d have been more about the ‘library at night‘.
