I love this series sooo soooo much. The characters are so interesting, screwups and fascinating as they try to save the world whilst the big boys are clueless as usual.

Outrageous and I love it for that. There's dark humour but there's also outlandish hijinks and I am here for the mix. Don't get me wrong, this is a novel about failed spies, a number are unlikeable and most are haunted in one way or another. My memory is that the last book in the series was particularly heavy (hence my long break between books), and I appreciate that this one had a bit more silly among the cloak and dagger and human tragedy. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Flawed individuals all, but as much as Jackson Lamb is abrasive and dogged in reminding the 'slow horses' of their faults, the author manages to display some mistakes in a compassionate light. The aspiring politician who fell from grace because he wanted to help his brother, the ex-con who was provided a chance to do better and only fell into folly because he was trying to help. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I was particularly struck by Herron's wording prefacing the memorial service scene: “This is what London and its sister cities have learned: that hate crime pollutes the soul, but only the souls of those who commit it. When those who mourn stand together, their separate chimes sounding in unison if only for a moment, they remain unstained.“ 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Despite the metric ton of cynicism, this book falls into the grand tradition of a mystery with people trying to do good up against those who have decided to do bad. Whether the ones doing good ARE good is another matter.
This entry is definitely an ensemble piece. If you'd asked me after the first book who the main character is, I'd have said River Cartwright.

Robotswithpersonality 5/? Subsequently, each book has focused a bit more on different characters, but I think the main thread is the forceful personality of Jackson Lamb. Wouldn't want to meet him, but happy to have him corral the struggling spooks and solve the puzzles. I'd say if you find Hawthorne from the Horowitz mysteries infuriating in his attitudes, you're not going to like reading about Lamb. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/? Sincerely hoping Roddy learns a valuable lesson, and that Shirley doesn't backslide too far. I like the breadcrumbs sprinkled for River and Catherine, revelations that could lead to further developments in future books. 😉 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/? Some details reflecting the time of publication and prevailing attitudes towards certain minority groups, though not necessarily the views of the author, because I feel like they need their own warning:
1) the terrorists being indoctrinated, incompetent young men from North Korea
2) the model minority Muslim mayoral candidate turning out to be a drinker who pays for illegal IDs for a not-dead radicalized relative to disappear
5mo
Robotswithpersonality 8/? any acknowledgement of any wrongdoing
3) a politician having his career threatened via evidence that he chose to wear traditionally feminine clothing/did drag in a club, because the one threatening knows it wouldn't be accepted by his constituents, even if it's acknowledged there's nothing wrong with it, because the politician has some pretty repugnantly conservative views in other areas
5mo
Robotswithpersonality 9/9 4) Man with acknowledged mental health concerns presented as 'possibly a psychopath' who gets a bit chipper after killing someone on purpose or accidentally

⚠️animal death, racism, Islamophobia, terrorism, drug addiction, dementia, ableism

Robotswithpersonality @Soubhville Thanks! The cardigan overall is basically every colour under the sun, but I'm hoping I've pieced it together on a way that won't hurt the eyes! 😅 5mo

Fifth in his Slough House spy series. They just get better and better and Jackson Lamb is one of the great comic creations.

Coffee and book 5 in the fantastic #SloughHouse series, can't wait to get tucked into this one. If you're a fan of fast-paced spy fiction, this series is some of the best of the genre.

EadieB I love Mick Herron books too. I've read 5 of his books. (Book 1-4 of The Oxford Series and Nobody Walks). (edited) 3y
susurran @EadieB I cannot wait for the next book, I power-binged the entire series in one go and can't get enough. Really looking forward to the TV series as well! 3y
EadieB @susurran That‘s how I read his Oxford series - one right after the other. Looking forward to TV series too! 3y

I love the “Slow Horses” series, of which this is the second to last (so far). They‘re very witty with lots of sly humor. Although the series is British, I loved this comment on the state of our American politics!

5th in the series about a grp of washed up mi5 agents under the leadership of grotesque but brilliant Jackson lamb finds them investigating the attempted murder of one of their number whilst terrorist rocks the country. I love this series, very dark humour and cracking writing.
I couldn't resist my library's latest display and the obvious photo opportunity.

andrew61 @JanuarieTimewalker13 i suspect i adopted cracking from Wallace and gromit 'cracking toast gromit ' ☺ 5y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts look forward to seeing your comments ☺ 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Ok, all of that is over my head, but I‘ll take your word for it! 🙃 5y
andrew61 @JanuarieTimewalker13 oops i thought everyone knew Wallace and gromit, its an animated plasticine Yorkshire inventor and his loyal dog. I'm sure it would reward viewing on you tube 😂 5y
CarolynM I love the sound of this series. Unfortunately the first one isn't so cheap on kindle here @Cathythoughts I'm going to look out for it in the discount shops. In the meantime, stacking this one. (edited) 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I will check it out!! You‘re talking to someone who is just viewing the 1st season of Supernatural, so I‘m usually years behind in most things!! 5y

Final post of the night and apologies for the fruity language but mick herron is a brilliant writer of modern spy fiction. Within a few chapters i encountered two pieces of brilliant writing, one a stunning evocation of rain and the other simply had me laughing out loud. If you've not read the series id highly recommend.

Love the slow horses of Slough House and Jackson Lamb. Tried to read and savor but just gulped down in one go! Spy vs spy playing by London Rules, the most important of which is cover your ass. It‘s like George Smiley on steroids!

This was a fantastic book!! Didn‘t realise that it was the 6th in a series when I picked it up 😂 but I had heard it was great so dived in anyway.

There were a few things that clearly referred to previous books, but the writing was good, characters interesting and the storyline engaging, so this definitely worked as a stand-alone.

Going back to start the series from the beginning now 👍🏻

The fifth in Mick Herron‘s superb JACKSON LAMB SERIES is another superb spy thriller packed with action, twists, turns, intrigue and plotting and laugh-put-loud humour, which has me engrossed from start (which features a chilling terrorist attack that plays with reader perceptions) to a finish that offers two massive bombshells and makes me desperate to read book six.

Emma24 Do you think you need to read the previous books to enjoy this one, or is it good as a stand-alone book? 7y
IReadThereforeIBlog Definitely need to read the earlier ones as there‘s a fair bit of cross referencing (especially the book immediately before this one). I think they‘re worth your time though - one of my favourite spy thriller series. 7y

This is simply marvellous. A brilliant mix of hilarity and well-plotted espionage thriller, in a frighteningly familiar and up to date setting. I have been looking forward to this for a long time. Mick Herron‘s books featuring the grotesque Jackson Lamb have quickly established themselves as modern spy story classics. Very humorous although that never compromises the integrity of very well crafted plots. #mickherron #jacksonlamb #spyfiction #espionage #knutsford #currentlyreading #soy #thriller #london #slowhorses #sloughhouse
