Reading Women
Reading Women: Literary Figures and Cultural Icons from the Victorian Age to the Present | Jennifer Phegley, Janet Badia
5 posts
Literary and popular culture has often focused its attention on women readers, particularly since early Victorian times. In Reading Women, an esteemed group of new and established scholars provide a close study of the evolution of the woman reader by examining a wide range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century media, including Antebellum scientific treatises, Victorian paintings, and Oprah Winfrey's televised book club, as well as the writings of Charlotte Bront, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Zora Neale Hurston. Attending especially to what, how, and why women read, Reading Women brings together a rich array of subjects that sheds light on the defining role the woman reader has played in the formation, not only of literary history, but of British and American culture. The contributors break new ground by focusing on the impact representations of women readers have had on understandings of literacy and certain reading practices, the development of books and print culture, and the categorization of texts into high and low cultural forms.

1. We have a library so I suppose that's a special place for reading. But I read just as often on the couch or in bed
2. Either, and sometimes I just remember the page number
3. Usually at chapter breaks or other breaks in the text, but I can stop anywhere if necessary.
4. Occasionally
5. Occasionally, but I prefer quiet
6. I usually have a book I've started and then got distracted and started something else. I always intend to go back ...

CarolynM 7. Everywhere 8. Silently 9. I try not to read ahead but I often find the temptation is too great 10. Try hard to keep all books like new 11. Certainly not! 12. I tag @Brona Thanks for the tag @Centique 🌼 (edited) 7y
