Well, That Escalated Quickly
Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist | Franchesca Ramsey
18 posts | 23 read | 24 to read
In this sharp, funny, and incredibly timely collection of personal essays, veteran video blogger and star of MTV's Decoded Franchesca Ramsey explores race, identity, online activism, and the downfall of real communication in the age of Twitter rants and call-out wars. Franchesca Ramsey didn't set out to be an activist. Or a comedian. Or a commentator on identity, race, and culture, really. But then her YouTube video "What White Girls Say. . . to Black Girls" went viral. Twelve million views viral. Faced with an avalanche of media requests, fan letters, and hate mail, she had two choices: Jump in and make her voice heard, or step back and let others frame the conversation. After a crash course in social justice and more than a few foot-in-mouth moments, she realized she had a unique talent and passion for breaking down injustice in America in ways that could make people listen and engage. In her first book, Ramsey uses her own experiences as an accidental activist to explore the many ways we communicate with each other--from the highs of bridging gaps and making connections to the many pitfalls that accompany talking about race, power, sexuality, and gender in an unpredictable public space...the internet. WELL, THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY includes Ramsey's advice on dealing with internet trolls and low-key-racists, confessions about being a former online hater herself, and her personal hits and misses in activist debates with everyone from bigoted Facebook friends and misguided relatives to mainstream celebrities and YouTube influencers. With sharp humor and her trademark candor, Ramsey shows readers we can have tough conversations that move the dialogue forward, rather than backward, if we just approach them in the right way.

I inadvertently finished my #DoubleSpin before my #BookSpin. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Less memoir, more how to avoid the same mistakes I‘ve made type book about the entrees to social justice. #ReadBlackAuthors

Fun Fact: I was introduced to the authors work after randomly standing behind her at a fashion show at #NYFW. Unlike the other “celebs” around her, she was super nice, kind, and normal.

It was ok. It seems to be written with a very specific audience in mind. I admire much of the author‘s online work. That said, the book didn‘t feel all that revelatory and was only occasionally funny.

#NoFemmeber #NonFictionNovember This memoir piqued my interest last year but fell by the wayside #Whoops maybe I‘ll pick it up for #booked2019 #socialmediafocus 😉It has a so-so rating on Litsy so I‘m hoping I can try this via #Hoopla or #OverDrive

Megabooks I have a lot of a lot of forgetful whoopses! #relatable Your book sounds good. I was hoping to use this one for the #socialmediafocus #booked2019 (edited) 6y

I feel like the author of this book tackled a really tough topic and I find that extraordinary. With that being said, I think I wanted this to have more actually feeling and a little more information to back her up in some of her claims/ideas. Overall, the idea really was excellent, I just needed more. #goodreadsgiveaways

I needed to burn a few Audible credits before my renewal (no real difficulty). I may have expected too much from it. It was fine; but not extraordinary.

This was heartfelt and sincere. Ramsey didn‘t spare her pride and ego when she wrote about her experiences and the things she learned from them.

So many great takeaways for such a quick read! Franchesca takes you through her rise to accidental activism and shares her blunders, her regrets and her growth. Really, really powerful and informative while still so relatable.

Useful guide full of stories about how to behave on the internet. Enjoyed Franchesca‘s examples of how even best intentions can backfire, how call-outs can be manipulated, and whether or not something is really worth unfriending some over. Very open and candid memoir.
