The Prince of Mist
The Prince of Mist | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
It's wartime, and the Carver family decides to leave the capital where they live and move to a small coastal village where they've recently bought a home. But from the minute they cross the threshold, strange things begin to happen. In that mysterious house still lurks the spirit of Jacob, the previous owners' son, who died by drowning. With the help of their new friend Roland, Max and Alicia Carver begin to explore the strange circumstances of that death and discover the existence of a mysterious being called the Prince of Mist--a diabolical character who has returned from the shadows to collect on a debt from the past. Soon the three friends find themselves caught up in an adventure of sunken ships and an enchanted stone garden--an adventure that will change their lives forever.

I'm in love with this cover!
It's noticeable that it's an earlier work than the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, but it's still very Zafón. 💕 This was a book that I'll keep for my children to read.

I am reading a lot of Junior fiction at the moment as I started a new teaching job and am teaching new texts. Reading new material and making new resources are my favourite things to do. I have particularly loved 'Prince of Mist' by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and 'The Good Thieves' by Katherine Rundell. Super choices for 11- 14/15 year olds.

The Prince of Mist holds a deathly desire to claim his end of the bargain….this is a suspenseful start to the Zafon trilogy. It‘s horrifying and creepy and great!

I really enjoyed this. It felt like a spooky episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark or Goosebumps with actual real life consequences. May need to find the rest of the series now….. #AuthorAMonth

I love Zafon's writing. His descriptions are so vivid and his atmosphere so creepy. Even though this is a YA story, it's really engaging. It's funny that Steven King gave it a great review given he wrote “IT“; I wonder what the timing was for that! GO ZAFON (rip). #litsyAtoZ challenge @bookishmarginalia

Zafon is fantastic at setting a scene, creating an atmosphere & drawing in the reader. He does that here with an idyllic little town, a house with a sad, mysterious history, and a creepy walled garden full of statues. But the plot was a bit clumsy. A few threads are left unexplained & several too-convenient or cliche plot devices fall flat. But it‘s a decent creepy little tale—intended for YA/MG readers who might find it more effective than I did!

I reorganized my TBR/reading nook basket & had to share. (I have a TBR basket because my TBR shelves & my “TBR soon” shelf apparently aren‘t enough.) I have my EfM textbooks & my currently-planned October TBRs, then books my husband is ostensibly reading & his EfM textbooks. And a pen & pencil & some page flags tucked in there as well. Tagged is October‘s book club pick & of course there‘s Anne for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. Organization, yay!

@Eggs It's #WondrousWednesday on Thursday this week. Thanks for the tag, @JaclynW !

1. My pup Watson had a blast running around the park.
2. Either Luna Lovegood or Agent Peggy Carter. Tomorrow my choices may change! 😉
3. A few good ones but the tagged book is the first one I thought of.

This was Zafon's first book, written for a YA audience, and although there is room for him to improve (as he did), this book still captures some of the mystery and magic we see in his later novels. We also get some of his beautiful turns of phrase, with one noted in the picture. A quick and creepy read - perfect for a dark, rainy afternoon. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #bookspinbonanza @TheAromaofBooks

I did enjoy this dark fantasy novella, but was a little disappointed by it. It's one of Zafon's early works, which was originally marketed as Young Adult but which the author says he intended to be readable for any age. I found it rather too YA-ish for my tastes, although the premise is intriguing and it's quite fun to read. Just a so-so for this then ⭐⭐⭐

One of my neighbors, about a block away, put up a Little Free Library a week or so ago. I finally walked over there today to check it out and leave a couple books. And I brought this one home with me! I really enjoyed Zafon‘s Watcher in the Shadows a few months ago, so I‘m excited to read this one as well—both are early YA novels of his. They‘re both part of a series but seem to be self-contained stories.

It seems the time has come when I should read some books I've bought long, long ago. I wanted to read #Zafon YA trilogy since I totally loved The Shadow of the Wind 💙 and I'm not disappointed. I stayed up till 3 in the morning. The story is quite simple, but it catches reader's attention and is beautifully written. It also crept me out at times 😖 Fast and amusing read - ideal for cold autumn days🍁 #Catalan #YA #uglycover

Fleeing the shadow of war, the Carver family leaves the city and moves to a small coastal village. All is well at first, as the children make new friends and the family settles in. And then things start to happen—little accidents, mysterious sightings & more. A solid, well-written YA thriller with a supernatural twist that is sure to find a place with young readers who enjoy a slow-paced, atmospheric read.

Students are always asking us for horror or spooky books or stories with things that go bump in the night. Hopefully, this one will fit the bill. Who knew Zafón wrote for young readers? I didn‘t until I stumbled across these—don‘t remember where of course—and I‘m looking forward to seeing what it‘s all about.

Moving back to Kuwait where my husband lives in another 5 months after 2 years of living in India and I'm super excited! But sadly won't be able to carry a lot of books with me and probably won't be shipping them! All I can do is carry a few of them with me every time I visit India! So I've decided to finish as many unread books as possible before I leave and leave the ebooks to read while I'm there! #booknerdproblems

This was lent to me by a year 11 pupil last year. She said it was something she thought I would enjoy as had the supernatural weaved into the real world. This was the type of book that was so well written you were uneasy, terrified for the characters and left dismayed. The writing was sinister, subtle and engaging throughout. #pupilschoice #teachersoflitsy

This was a very intriguing read--magical realism set around WWII time period, following a few kids as they investigate the death of a boy who used to live at their new house. It's only 200 pages long, so it was a very quick read! 4⭐️

I really loved this! I often struggle to find books in the horror genre for my class (who are 11). It's pretty creepy and possibly a bit too scary for them but it's really well written with some great characters in it. Some of the description and phrases used are fantastic and would be good to use parts of it as examples of good writing for older children to see.
