Bibliotherapy
Bibliotherapy: The Girl's Guide to Books for Every Phase of Our Lives | Beverly West, Nancy Peske
17 posts | 7 read | 44 to read
Because women read books differently than guys do... Every woman knows ... books are more than a way to kill time on the bus they're therapy that fits in our bag. Whether we're wallowing in a sullen perennial adolescence or our biological clock is ringing and we can't find the snooze button, books are the dog-eared friends that help us deal with our baggage as we navigate life's journey. Now Bibliotherapy prescribes the best of classic and contemporary Chick Lit that women turn to again and again for inspiration (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) ... for escape (Ladder of Years) ... for revenge against the patriarchy (Our Blood) ... and for bonding with our girlfriends (Waiting to Exhale). Upper-thigh spread sparking a midlife crisis? Read A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains and remember that it's not over until the fat lady yodels. Did your pot of gold turn out to be fourteen-karat tin? Open your eyes with Awakening to the Sacred and learn to savor your rainbow. Wondering what all the fuss is about? Climb into bed with Lady Chatterley's Lover and explore your pleasure potential. With provocative points to ponder as you read ("What is the metaphorical significance of a codpiece?"), fun quotes, and a list of books that must not be read but, in Dorothy Parker's words, "thrown with great force," Bibliotherapy ensures you'll always find the right literary prescription no matter what phase of life you're teetering on the brink of! Plus: Doomed but Inspired Heroes ... Books to Read When You're Sick of Your Career and Are Seriously Considering Taking Up Alpaca Ranching in Peru ... Bad Girls We'd Like to Have Over for Girls' Night ... Books That Are the Equivalent of Citronella for Men ... and much more! From the Trade Paperback edition.

2. Wow. Distracts from your own problems, experience how other people live and think, can be a social activity with a bookclub or Litsy.

Thanks @RamsFan1963 for the tag!
1. I have taken classes before and participated in book clubs but these days it‘s just books.
2. Yes but I will say I‘m more well read than my current ones (fresh out of college) so it‘s tough to get recommendations.

Butterfinger I am getting ready for my 21st year of teaching fifth. My anxiety is through the roof. It feels like we are going back to the 19th century. No more group work, no collaboration, no more one on one instruction. I want to keep them safe, I don't do well with change. We are doing hybrid instruction and I am just not ready. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to vent. I try not to fuss. 4y
jmtrivera Thanks, from a teacher with 2 weeks left before going back! 4y
REPollock Our classes begin August 10. I‘m high risk and have a dispensation from our ADA compliance office to teach remotely, but it feels like that‘s just a different kind of stressful. 4y

Went to a fantastic book presentation at the bookshop where l work yesterday night.
Bibliotherapy is a fascinating subject and Marco, the author of the book, who's also a friend, is an awesome person.
He told me l have the qualities to become a bibliotherapist myself. Well, l'd like to try. Who knows?

BethM Sounds lovely. I bet you could do it. 6y
Bibliogeekery As a therapist and a booknerd I've often been curious about bibliotherapy! 6y
JazzFeathers @BethM @Bibliogeekery l'm going to start reading articles about it abd see how l understand it. But honestly l feel an affinity. Well, we'll see 🤗 6y

Sorry if l post another ltalian title, but actually it's the idea that blew my mind. The publisher l work for has just published this book about bibliotherapy. This is a form of cure that uses books and stories as a means of healing or relief.
The author of this book, who's one of the few practitioners here in ltaly, is a nurse who for a time practiced in hospital departements for the terminally illed.
I'm utterly in awe.

writerlibrarian We do this at my library. Every month we have theme like in June it's being in love with love. All fiction. It's like a medical prescription with posology etc all done with humour and in a very soft approach. It's good that the 💡 of bibliotherapy is being adapted and used in many many ways and places. 7y
JazzFeathers @writerlibrarian l'll go to the presentation of the book next Monday. I can't wait to see how's it's done. 7y

#ReadingResolutions #BooksAboutBooks 📚Two handy books about books. A friend gave me the tagged book (along with Cinematherapy & Culinarytherapy...Hmm... do you think there was a message there?! 🤔😜) a few years ago. It's a book about books for your every mood. The other book was a library store acquisition-it had mixed reviews on Litsy, but it was half-off, so a .50 cent investment. It's still in my #TBR stack-with the price sticker on it. 😬📚

benchley1 I used to have bibliotherapy and cinematheropy, I loved them! 7y

Going to try to do a few of these awesome photo challenges that @writerlibrarian has come up with! Might not make it far but I love the idea of some bibliotherapy during a stressful time.

I had a bit of an annoying #wakeupcall today. Our landlords want to sell our apartment, so we have to move out before March. I know it will probably end up being for the better, since our apartment is pretty old and in need of repairs, but it still came completely out of the blue. So I'm doing a bit of book gazing to lift my mood. It is impossible to be negative when surrounded by all this prettiness 😍

MoniqueReads305 Sorry to hear that. It happened to me a couple of years ago and it sucked. 🤞 I hope you find a better place that doesn't need repairs. 7y
batsy It's stressful being at the whim of landlords. Best wishes and good luck finding a new place 🍀 Glad the books made you feel better 🙂 7y
Librariana That is definitely an unexpected call and I agree with @Marchpane that it isn't the kind of decision you want made for you... but I hope it leads to you finding an absolutely charming little place that is perfect for you 🍀👍🏡😊💜📚 7y

erzascarletbookgasm Hope you find a better place by then, too. 🤞 7y

This is an older shot from a reorganizing project. It might as well be my #24in48 stack considering how many books I keep mentally adding to the list. I'm all "Ooh, I can read that, and I can read that, and I can read that..."

#TBRtemptation post 4! For you female bibliophiles to help you through many moments: killing time on the bus, dealing with adolescence, the biological clock is ringing, finding revenge against the patriarchy, bonding with girlfriends, etc. Provocative points to consider (the codpiece's metaphorical significance), fun quotes, & lots of lists are at hand. (Doomed But Inspired Heroes; Books That Are Men's Citronella; etc.) #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

rockpools @zsuzsanna_reads Do you know Mr Bs Book Emporium in Bath? They do something v similar. 8y
Lindy Interesting that they advertise this service as bookable sessions. Readers' advisory is a pretty standard service at most public libraries, as far as I know. It was my favourite part of the job. The challenge is juggling this type of question, that takes a longer conversation, with serving other patrons' needs. Good idea to book, even if it's just to alert people that the service exists. 8y
zsuzsanna_reads @RachelO alas, Bath is not exactly next door 😝 8y
