Howl
Howl: Original Draft Facsimile, Transcript, and Variant Versions, Fully Annotated by Author, with Contemporaneous Correspondence, Account of First Public Reading, Legal Skirmishes, Presursor Texts, and Bibliography | Allen Ginsberg
19 posts | 43 read | 15 to read
First published in 1956, Allen Ginsberg's Howl is a prophetic masterpiecean epic raging against dehumanizing society that overcame censorship trials and obscenity charges to become one of the most widely read poems of the century. This annotated version of Ginsberg's classic is the poet's own re-creation of the revolutionary work's composition processas well as a treasure trove of anecdotes, an intimate look at the poet's writing techniques, and a veritable social history of the 1950s.

I had an excellent birthday yesterday! I conquered one of my biggest fears and drove to San Francisco by myself just to visit the famous City Lights Bookstore.(It's only a 2 hour drive away but a hectic city to drive in!) It has a very fascinating history behind it, but long story short it's famous for publishing Allen Ginsberg's Howl. It was a lot smaller than I was expecting but still cool and worth the trip. I'm happy with my little haul 🤗

NeedsMoreBooks Happy belated birthday! 🎂 5y

Happy Independent Bookstore Day!!!!

tournevis Did you see where in the store it says Shakespeare & Co? I'm trying to verify something in the book I'm reading. I know the façade of S & Co says City Lights Books on the left most window already, from memory. 6y
Booksnchill @tournevis so sorry, I just saw this and won‘t be back but I‘ll look at my pictures and see if I caught it 6y

Had to go with this one for #howl. It was my first introduction to the beat poets when a high school junior read it at a poetry slam I attended. #itwasthe90s #howl #octoberxfiles

#aprilbookshowers

I don't own or read much #poetry but I absolutely had to buy The Howl when I visited City Lights book store as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, owner of City Lights, originally published the poem. Ferlinghetti was faced with jail time for publishing this "obscene" poem until a judge ruled it as a piece of literary work with social merit.

All time favorite #poetry. ::the picture is from my wedding, we used an old card catalogue for table assignments and library cards with fake stories about each guest. So much work but totally worth it!::

Was watching an old episode of Archer, and Howl by Allen Ginsberg. Come to find out, my boyfriend has never heard it before. Cue pausing the episode and listening to Ginsberg read one of my favorite poems.

brendanmleonard It's his birthday! Coincidence? I think not 😄 9y
