An enthralling and sophisticated fantasy story from one of Japan's most popular writers of teen fiction, which has been turned into a popular anime series Erin's family have an important responsibility: caring for the Toda, fearsome water serpents who form the core of their Lord's army. So when a number of Toda mysteriously die, it is Erin's mother who takes the blame, and the punishment - she is sentenced to death. Before she dies she manages to use an ancient, forbidden power to send Erin to safety - leaving her daughter alone, far from home but with the knowledge that both she and her mother are somehow different. Soon, Erin finds she can talk to both the terrifying Toda and the majestic Royal Beasts, who protect the supreme queen of her realm. This knowledge gives her great power, but it also involves her in deadly plots and political gameplaying that she wants no part of. Can Erin save herself and prevent her beloved beasts from being used as tools of war, or is there no way of avoiding the terrible battles to come?

Today‘s reading is a YA best seller from Japan. Although once again I appear to be the odd one out, these books were adapted for an anime that is really popular. 🤷‍♀️ Who knew? I don‘t remember how I found this book, and its sequel, but it wasn‘t through Crunchyroll. Anyway, all the reviews are good so I‘m hoping for a fun read.

What a brilliant book, what a brilliant translation and I am so happy that there is a sequel to this. Do I want to see what Elin, Seimiya, and Ialu do next? Yes. Yes, I absolutely do.

Beautiful world building. However the story could have definitely been shortened. Although I enjoyed the story overall, it‘s entirely too long and I don‘t see myself having the patience to read the second half of the series.

It took me a while to really get into this story and man did I get into it. I loved this story and can't wait to read the next installment.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The writing style was a little difficult for me, but the worldbuilding and story were AMAZING

1. Tagged & The Radium Girls!
2. LOTR and the Martian
3. Actually, LOTR! I‘d never read it before seeing the movies, and I fell so far in love with them that I had to read the book

I really like Nahoko Uehashi's YA fantasy novels. I thought this one was at its best in the first half - I cared more about Elin's relationships with the animals and her mentors than I did about the politics of the kingdom. But I'm looking forward to when the sequel comes out in English.

effani #ReadHarder2020: a doorstopper (>500 pages) by a woman, published after 1950. At 512 pages, this barely qualifies, and my paperback copy isn't going to stop much of a door, but it does qualify. #ReadHarder (edited) 4y

The story was neat, and I liked the discourse on the human-beast relationship, but the writing didn‘t work for me. Not sure how much of that is due to translations, but it was clunky. Info dumps mixed with underdeveloped sections. Very thought-provoking though.

I do love my job sometimes - a bunch of YA proofs just come in 😍😍 I‘m particularly intrigued by The beast Player, a Japanese fantasy with hints of dark folklore and fairy tales!

My last read was very short. This next one appears to be over 500 pages. Hard to judge when it‘s electronic. Also making an appearance, my brand new shiny iPad, and new specs. #currentlyreading #intranslation #marchrelease2018 #rso #middlefiction #fantasy #adventure #magic
