It's OK That You're Not OK
It's OK That You're Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn't Understand | Megan Devine
Challenging conventional wisdom on grief, a pioneering therapist offers a new resource for those experiencing loss When a painful loss or life-shattering event upends your world, here is the first thing to know: there is nothing wrong with grief. Grief is simply love in its most wild and painful form, says Megan Devine. It is a natural and sane response to loss. So, why does our culture treat grief like a disease to be cured as quickly as possible? In Its OK That Youre Not OK, Megan Devine offers a profound new approach to both the experience of grief and the way we try to help others who have endured tragedy. Having experienced grief from both sidesas both a therapist and as a woman who witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partnerMegan writes with deep insight about the unspoken truths of loss, love, and healing. She debunks the culturally prescribed goal of returning to a normal, happy life, replacing it with a far healthier middle path, one that invites us to build a life alongside grief rather than seeking to overcome it. In this compelling and heartful book, youll learn: Why well-meaning advice, therapy, and spiritual wisdom so often end up making it harder for people in grief How challenging the myths of griefdoing away with stages, timetables, and unrealistic ideals about how grief should unfoldallows us to accept grief as a mystery to be honored instead of a problem to solve Practical guidance for managing stress, improving sleep, and decreasing anxiety without trying to fix your pain How to help the people you lovewith essays to teach us the best skills, checklists, and suggestions for supporting and comforting others through the grieving process Many people who have suffered a loss feel judged, dismissed, and misunderstood by a culture that wants to solve grief. Megan writes, Grief no more needs a solution than love needs a solution. Through stories, research, life tips, and creative and mindfulness-based practices, she offers a unique guide through an experience we all must facein our personal lives, in the lives of those we love, and in the wider world. Its OK That Youre Not OK is a book for grieving people, those who love them, and all those seeking to love themselvesand each otherbetter.

Last week, my life turned upside down when my dad died very suddenly. While I‘ve been trying to come to terms with the fact that I will now have to adjust to life without having my dad by my side, and that he won‘t be here for my 30th birthday, this has been undoubtedly the hardest thing I‘ve ever had to go through. Trying to find books to help me understand the grieving process, and how to cope🤍🕊️

I lost my 30 year old sister in January 2022. My most loved human. A full decade younger than me.
Finding this book which is solely focused on out of order deaths has helped. It hasn't made things easier, my grief is still the heavy immovable object it was before, but I feel seen, understood.
Megan spoke my language and I know I will reread chapters again over the course of my life. Grief is love and love lasts forever.
It's OK that I'm not OK.

Jari-chan Sorry for your loss 😢 ❤️ Feel hugged if you want to ❤️ 2y

Bookwomble I lost my sister in 2016. I'm not "over it", never will be, don't want to be, but I find that I'm adapting and learning to live with it. Thinking of you in your own time of grief, and sending love ? 2y
Michellesibs @Bookwomble I hate how many people know how this feels. I'm sorry for your loss and thank you for taking the time to comment. Grief is exhausting but I get through the days and that's enough right now. Sending love back to you ❤️ 2y

Think this Book could be a real help to people in their grief. Knowing that all feelings are ok and there is no time limit to the grief. For professionals working in bereavement would definitely add this to your reading library 📚

Great advise on grief.

quote
Gadolby

If we want to care for one another better, we have to rehumanize grief. We have to talk about it. We have to understand it as a natural, normal process, rather than something to be shunned, rushed, or maligned. We have to start talking about the real skills needed to face the reality of living a life entirely changed by loss.

#wintergames #thefilthyanimals #24B42020 These weren‘t exactly fun reads but they have been on my TBR since my Mum passed away. The tagged book was the one that made the biggest difference in processing grief and offers information about an on-line support/writing group. I‘m trying to start 2020 with a better approach to my grief.

Alora Adding these to my TBR. Lost my Dad 5 years ago....❤️Sending Hugs!!🤗 5y
Come-read-with-me @Alora Thanks. I‘m so sorry to hear about your Dad. Grief comes in cycles and waves - take care of yourself ❤️ 5y
rather_be_reading 60 pts for reviews plus 230 pts for 10 per hr. so 291 total! 5y
britt_reads I‘m stacking the tagged book. I lost my mom and my little sister a couple of years ago, just a month and a half apart. It‘s good to have more resources available to help with processing grief. I‘m so sorry to hear about your loss and I‘m glad you‘re taking care of yourself! 5y
Come-read-with-me @britt_reads It must have been so hard to lose them in such close proximity. My heart and prayers are with you. I think you‘ll like the book because it doesn‘t just focus on immediate grief. It recognizes, values, and supports how people grieve in different ways at many points in their lives. ❤️ 5y

1) I despise self help books as a general rule, but I tried this after my sister passed. Yeah, no. Can't do it.
2) Who's Line Is It Anyway
3) Today, cereal with no milk
4) Central (CDT until Nov, then CST because we like to mess with everyone's sleep schedule)
5) Black Night
