GingerAntics @rubyslippersreads I wish I had that problem with my stunners. @Rachel.Rencher mine will sit behind a laptop screen, on their phones. They think I won‘t notice them or see the phone. I used to have a student who would put the phone away, but it was still up her sleeve. She got anxious if she couldn‘t feel it. They are so connected to their phones. 4y

GingerAntics @Rachel.Rencher I‘m one of the youngest teachers where I work. Everyone else was teaching or a principal when I was in high school. We found a phone laying around and I just popped off, “oh no, someone must be bleeding. Those are surgically attached, aren‘t they?” And everyone bust out laughing. Of course, half of us were also on our phones at the time. 😂 4y

GingerAntics @rubyslippersreads fair. I‘ve actually done that, too. I‘ve gotten to where, as long as they‘re paying attention to lessons and they‘re getting good work done, I don‘t care if there are a few texts sent in the process. I‘ve even found ways to have them use their phones in the lessons, just to get them to buy in. 4y

I'm the youngest by at least 10 years at my school. 🤣 I tried allowing phones but it became too hard to let the responsible kids send a few texts and then have to get stern with the kid who won't stop snapchatting. I'm still unsure of what exactly to do. 🙃 My HS was so strict on phones that it's weird for me to even have this struggle. We couldn't even use our phones at lunch if we were inside or we'd lose it for the day. 4y
GingerAntics @Rachel.Rencher our school would only give it back to the parents. Mine got taken away one time, because someone pulled it out of my pocket. My mother told the principal I was about to make an 1.5 bus trip to get to her office so I could be taken to work another 40 minutes away by car, and if I was harmed by my lack of ability to call for help, the school was being held responsible. They gave me my phone back. 4y
GingerAntics @Rachel.Rencher I‘ve told my students that if you‘re not passing, I better not see your phone out. We‘re not allowed to take them, but we can submit a discipline/insubordination report. I have way fewer problems than other teachers because I pick my battles, but they also know I won‘t take shit. I‘m not strict about every single thing, especially when it really doesn‘t matter. 4y
Adventures_of_a_French_Reader @Rachel.Rencher It's sad that you have to deal with that... Personally, I wouldn't be lenient about things like that, because outside being a blatant lack of respect, I don't think that it is helpful to students on the long term, especially on the job market, to develop that kind of addiction. But well, if it was up to me the only phone they would be allowed at school would be a flip phone with no internet... 4y
Lucy_Anywhere I let the kids charge their phones using an extension cord at the back of the class- kids are happy as their phones are charging and I‘m happy because their phones are at the back of the class 😂 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Bookish.juju I agree, but there's an equity issue with that. Some students have special accommodations that allow them to use their phones throughout class. Also, I worry about becoming a police officer rather than a teacher. I know that no matter what I do, students will always be addicted to their devices and try to sneak them. Might as well acknowledge they're there and learn how to work around them. It is sad, though. 4y
