White Houses
White Houses: A Novel | Amy Bloom
The unexpected and forbidden affair between Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok unfolds in a triumph of historical fiction from the New York Times bestselling author of Away and Lucky Us. I never envied a wife or a husband, until I met Eleanor. Then, I would have traded everything I ever had, every limo ride, every skinny dip, every byline and carefree stroll, for what Franklin had, polio and all. Lorena Hickok meets Eleanor Roosevelt in 1932 while reporting on Franklin Roosevelts first presidential campaign. Having grown up worse than poor in South Dakota and reinvented herself as the most prominent woman reporter in America, Hick, as shes known to her friends and admirers, is not quite instantly charmed by the idealistic, patrician Eleanor. But then, as her connection with the future first lady deepens into intimacy, what begins as a powerful passion matures into a lasting love, and a life that Hick never expected to have. She moves into the White House, where her status as first friend is an open secret, as are FDRs own lovers. After she takes a job in the Roosevelt administration, promoting and protecting both Roosevelts, she comes to know Franklin not only as a great president but as a complicated rival and an irresistible friend, capable of changing lives even after his death. Through it all, even as Hicks bond with Eleanor is tested by forces both extraordinary and common, and as she grows as a woman and a writer, she never loses sight of the love of her life. From Washington to Hyde Park, from a little white house on Long Island to an apartment on Manhattans Washington Square, Amy Blooms new novel moves elegantly through fascinating places and times, written in compelling prose and with emotional depth, wit, and acuity. Amy Bloom knows the urgency of love, wrote The Washington Post about Blooms acclaimed bestseller Away. The same could be said of White Houses, an unforgettable novel about the power of passion and the endurance of love. Praise for Amy Bloom Lucky Us Bloom is a great writer who keeps stepping into new territory, entirely unafraid. She is one of Americas unique and most gifted literary voices.Colum McCann Away A literary triumph. The New York Times A master stylist.Richmond Times-Dispatch

I didn‘t enjoy this fictionalised account of the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and reporter Lorena Hickok as much as I wanted to. I don‘t know a huge amount about American politics or personalities during FDRs presidency and the timeline jumped around leaving me a bit lost. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I‘d known more of the people I was reading about. Loving the cover though.

This was a rdg grp selection for Oct + it certainly made for interesting reading. It is the story of lorena hickok, journalist and lover of Eleanor Roosevelt, from her childhood through to Eleanor's death in 62. The Roosevelt marriage was fascinating as i knew nothing about the couple beyond the basic history. I enjyd the bk itself + found parts such as lorena's early life absorbing & the portrait of a love affair told with sensitivity.

Anna40 I started reading a book about Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok, can't remember the author's name, but it was a bit dull. The love story, the relationship between Roosevelt and Eleanor, Eleanor and her own writings are fascinating topics. Is this book mainly about Eleanor and Lorena? 5y
andrew61 @Anna40 i would say it's mainly lorena and its narrated by her. For a short book it dies fluctuate and at times i lost a bit of interest but overall I was glad i read it. 5y

kindergartenkat @Caterina I am really looking forward to With the Fire on High because I LOVED The Poet X. She's amazing on audio too. @marleed isn't that always the way with book holds? It's not like I put them all on hold at the same time or that they had the same wait times. 5y
marleed I even closely manage my holds by suspending some, but still it seems when it rains, it pours! 5y
BarbaraJean Oooh—enjoy With the Fire on High!! The audio was really good. I felt like it wasn‘t as good as The Poet X—but that‘s not really a criticism, because they‘re so different (and The Poet X was AMAZING). (edited) 5y

This book was such a delightful read. I loved the simple, quiet story of Eleanor Roosevelt and her companion/lover Hick as 2 women in love throughout years of their lives and their differing personal situations. The extent of historical truth didn‘t matter to me at all; it was the light, airy, and sweet story of the 2 women that carried me along. #pridemonth 🏳️‍🌈

I wasn‘t sure I wanted to read this after hearing the author on a podcast, but it was available and I needed an audio book. Mixing facts and fiction has always annoyed me and I rarely see the point. Being a facts OR fiction reader I like to know where the facts stop and the fiction starts. Made up conversations are particularly irksome. 🌟🌟1/2

Well, I finished it. I powered through for the sake of the book club. Even though the writing is quite lovely, the vignette style and not-exactly linear time line made it difficult to connect to this story, based on these fascinating people.

Working my way through my next book club book, and having trouble with the way this story is told. Almost stream of consciousness (which I hate), probably more vignette... anyone else? #probablyunpopularopinion

Stunningly beautiful love story.
Bloom‘s writing is exquisite. The last few paragraphs were so touching, I actually sighed at the end.

CouronneDhiver How racy is this one? I‘m interested but I don‘t care much for graphic sexuality 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver None at all. No sex really described at all, really. That was the beauty of it. It was tender and beautiful. Warning - there‘s a rape scene early (a character backstory) but it‘s not graphic, if that‘s possible to say. 6y

Ashley_Nicoletto @irre I love them way more than I thought I would. They are so intuitive. They stop playing when you take one out and start again when you put it back in. They're pretty comfortable. So small. And they allow me to move around my office without being connected to my phone. They have great range. 6y
Tamra My concern is losing them, especially for my husband. Is there a solution for that? Some kind of cord? (edited) 6y

ErikasMindfulShelf Sounds great. I have Bluetooth once but they are big. I like that they stop playing if you take one out. 6y
Notafraidofwords @Tamra I lost mind this week and I have been so utterly devastated that I can‘t even think too hard about it. They were a gift too. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Tamra They come in a case but it's pretty small too. Tinier than a credit card. They don't have a cord. I have that concern as well but I tuck them in my purse the majority of the time and it hasn't been a problem. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Notafraidofwords Ohhhh no. Do you think they'll resurface?! 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @irre Yes! Since I wear mine at work the stop playing feature is the best. 6y
Tamra @Notafraidofwords nooooo! I suppose it might work best (at least for me & husband) if they are a designated set for a particular place and don‘t get moved much. 🙃 6y
Notafraidofwords @Ashley_Nicoletto no. I went to a million places that day and I‘m sure someone found them and just kept them. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Notafraidofwords That is so disappointing. 😭😭😭 6y

Imagining the love affair between Eleanor Roosevelt and the reporter Lorena “Hick” Hickok. Not a very positive portrayal of FDR, though it did feel very lived-in and realistic. I guess we‘ll never know what really happened, but I like this as a possibility.

I really enjoyed this book! It's a fictional look (informed by much research) at the romance between Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok (Hicks). It has a fly-on-the-wall feeling about the Roosevelt white house, which is interesting. It's also a beautifully written queer love story about a very public figure. A delightful read! #queerbooks

A warm, fictionalized account of the love affair & longtime friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt & Lorena Hickok, who first met in 1932, when Eleanor was 48 & Hick was 39. I loved that it‘s about passion between women in their middle-to-later years. It‘s in Hick‘s voice & I also enjoyed the view into a larger lesbian world as she experienced it during her lifetime. Love, loyalty & social justice. #Audiobook narrated by Tonya Cornelisse. #lgbtq
