Great God Pan
Great God Pan | Arthur Machen
Arthur Machen was a Welsh writer and mystic who was best known for supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction, and "The Great God Pan "was one of his most famous works. A horror novella, "The Great God Pan "delves into themes of horror and morality, and H.P. Lovecraft himself said of the book, ""No one could begin to describe the cumulative suspense and ultimate horror with which every paragraph abounds."

“As you know, I rescued Mary from the gutter, and from almost certain starvation, when she was a child; I think her life is mine, to use as I see fit.”

I just started reading the “classic” The Great God Pan and boy are we off to a rough start 😅

Experimental brain surgery unleashes unspeakable, indescribable evil on the world.

Trouble is it's so unspeakable and indescribable I have no idea what it is except that the sight of it reduces people to gibbering idiots or makes them commit suicide. I recognise the story as a classic but it doesn't do anything for me, sorry.

Is Helen Vaughn a beautiful woman or the devil incarnate? #Scarathlon #TeamHarkness @StayCurious 16 points

Maxine1 She may well be a beautiful woman, but having had knowledge of the Great God Pan I think she may well be pretty evil. 4y

Had a big old hunt through the bookshelves in order to find a "book with a minimalist cover" to read for the #ReverseReadathon Bingo. Doesn't get much more minimalist than this! (Although I do have an old hardback that is completely blank, just a deep blue and only writing on the spine. The Spouse argued that "nothing at all isn't minimalist design, it's just nothing". ?)

I had never heard of this story until I read Stephen Kings dedication in Revival and then i found it on #serialreader . I really enjoyed this old horror tale, it kept me interested and the author allows the reader to create a lot of the horror in their mind. I understand how this is a important influential work for Stephen King.

The shortest book on my TBR. I was honestly expecting more horror, but it wasn‘t that scary at all. There were no graphic scenes. Instead, the released was asked to do a lot of imagining based upon vague descriptions, which I guess is why it didn‘t really freak me out. I did find it funny that Goodreads recommended Harriet the Spy because I was reading this book - for the life of me I can‘t figure out why! #SFFTBRChallenge

monalyisha Does the Goodreads algorithm think it‘s PETER Pan? 😅 (edited) 6y

A bit vague, and very dialogue-heavy. In my opinion, it benefits from being read in one or two sittings, rather than over several days as encouraged by the #SerialReader format, due to the number of characters and plotlines involved. I could see the influence on Lovecraft, but this wasn't as creepy and atmospheric.

2BR02B Also just realized I made an unintentional pun by "panning" this title. ? 6y

I've been neglecting #SerialReader for nearly a year, so I decided to start reading this short, weird classic tonight.

jpmcwisemorgan I thought that said the great POD Pan and thought, well, yeah, that‘s probably gonna be weird. 6y

Went to a very entertaining and informative talk on the life and works of Arthur Machen, and bought this new illustrated limited edition. I have no. 85/200. It's not my favourite Machen story, but the collector in me rejoices and the illustrations are cool. (This is also the last thing John Selway worked on before he sadly died very recently.) Also, I haven't read The Shining Pyramid before. 🤘😈

BekahB I really need to pick up a book of his stories. I‘ve only read The Great God Pan on Serial Reader. I think the app has a couple other Machen stories, but I‘d like to actually get a whole collection. 7y
Leniverse @BekahB I need to read more of his stuff too. You can get audio of several of them for free through LibriVox. I haven't checked Project Gutenberg, but I didn't find any free editions on Amazon. They have practically free ones though. I'm very partial to a short story called "The White People". 7y

Finished listening to this in the AM. It was good. It wasn't very frightening, and it wasn't gory at all. Both of which aren't complaints. I can see where the style was influential for Lovecraft and King. It was a great imaginative piece which allows one's mind to elaborate on the horrors within the text.

KrisConstantReader I think Stephen King has mentioned The Great God Pan as one of his favorites, if I'm not mistaken. 8y
brendanmleonard @KrisConstantReader he calls it the best horror story ever written. I'm inclined to agree. 8y

Well it's tough to disagree with Stephen King and HP Lovecraft but this was a snoozefest and about as scary as my cat.
